Sony has denied reports claiming that the platform holder will be introducing downloadable PlayStation 2 games via the PlayStation Network at the E3 Media and Business Summit later this month.

The company was responding to a screenshot posted by an anonymous user on website N4G, which appeared to show the presence of PS2 games available for purchase on the PlayStation Store.

According to the post, the image was received directly from a source at Sony Europe, with further details scheduled to appear E3 in mid-July.

However, speaking to GamePro, Sony’s Patrick Seybold commented, "I'm not sure where the image came from,” adding, "At this point, we haven't made any announcements, and there are no plans for PS2 downloadable titles on PS3."

Stay tuned.

basic PR responce, its not that far fetch to think that sometime in the future that PS2 games will be sold on the PS store.

@Agriel: Exactly, not to mention that the image is from a source at SCEE, whereas we have a guy from SCEA commenting on it. I dont see it as that big of a stretch, especially if the service launches in Europe. Im sure SCEE is aware of their customers opinions about their service, so this could be a great way to win them back.

Yesterday they said that there would be a walkthrough of the 2.40 firmware update, and less than 2 hours later there they came.. As someone said on a other forum. Sony dont want to confirm rumours but reveal new things.. So I think is coming especially because of all the 40 Gigs.. money can be made..

Well, im assuming the 40gig PS£s only stop the machine from READING the discs, and not, therefore, PLAYING the ames if they r on the HDD.

im assuming the games themselves would be in the vicinity of 5gigs each, as this is round about DVD time.

So, subsequently, i shall be occassionally playing my old PS2 discs, and not downloading any games, if they ever come

He may be mentioning this now, but it would not suprise me if the footage becomes available at E3. This is something that could really bring in money for Sony and for many reasons.

    1. There are alot of gamers out there who have so many PS1 and PS2 games that we haven't even got a chance to finish through or begin to play. Both systems put out alot of games. Not  to the extent of the NES and SNES, but still a great amount nonetheless.

    2. It is feasible to think that Sony could come up with a software/firmware update that would allow non-PS2 BC systems to play PS2 games, based on the fact that all of the current selling PS3s have BC based off of software emulation anyway.

    3. While the 40GB is not alot, a customer can come in and get an external Hard drive for their system. If the memory for the download itself must go on the built in HD, customers should still be able to get one of those laptop HD cards to put into their PS3.

    4. Let's say for example a new game comes out in the Legacy of Kain series. Some gamers may want to go back through previous installments in the series that they have not played. Games from that series are not as easy to find these days unless you go online anyway. So, why not make it available on the PSN site. That way, they can purchase those for a small amount, Let's say $5 a pop, that's about 25-30 dollars right there(I think 25). Then, when the PS3 one comes out they can buy that with knowledge of the story and thus get a better enjoyment out of it, because the series does have a strong and great storyline.

There are some that want people to move on from the PS2, but it is not so easily done. Sure Uncharted was excellent, but look how long gamers had to wait until the next great one came out which would probably be MLB the Show 08 even though some aren't into baseball games. Sony would really have to pump them out in rapid succession as they once did with the PS2, if they want gamers to move on. I would predict that they will reach that point one day, but I feel that they just are not there yet. Once more, the PS2 still sells at an excellent rate. For those who have not made the move to next gen yet, and there are many, they can get great games at a low price on the PS2 still.

Remember, Excellent games have an eternal life expectancy. When you can find yourself going back to your NES or Genesis to play a game every now and then, you know you have a great game and it will never die.

They are not gonna put PS2 games in the ps store right now because the PS2 console is still in production and selling. Once this ends then maybe they will find a way to put them in the store. But are you guys aware that PS2 games are in between 4 and 9 gb? Do you really wanna download such a big file?

downloadable ps2 games wouldnt be bad but i mean most of them you can go and buy on disc so theres really no point i mean with ps one games alot of them are rare and are hard to find (especially the good ones) so it would make sense to put them on there also ps2 games are pretty big even if you have a big hdd

what I'm about to say may sound harsh but its the truth. you cant blame Sony for putting out a 40gb ps3 that's not bc.  when Sony had a bc ps3 out al4ot of ppl complained about the price which i have to say was worth the price. if you wanted a bc ps3 you should have spent the money for one till this day there not Hard to find.  how i see it 40gb ps3 and all its features are worth the price. you get what your money pay for like some one on this site said once people wont this and that but dint wont to spend the money for it

they will release ps2 games on the psn when they stop selling ps2 consoles. last time I  checked ps2's were still outselling EVERYTHING else....why would they kill a cash cow just to better something else?

Smart move by Sony. If they let this happen then the PS2 system will completley die.

    • 5:25pm BST - July 1st, 2008

Well does that mean that they'll release a firmware for the 40GB version so that it'll be able to play PS2 games. I know that Sony is still making money off their PS2 games so this wouldn't be a bad idea to allow the 40GB version to play PS2 games.

The PS2 console is still a cash-cow for Sony... Maybe once the PS3 reaches higher install numbers, and the PS2 sales drop, they'll add that capability.

They need to put PS2 games on the PSN, mostly for those you do not have BC on their PS3 (40gb models).
