Oddworld creator says consoles are "problem"

Lorne Lanning, creator of the classic PSone Oddworld games, has criticised consoles for making game development too expensive.

"Personally, I think the consoles are a problem," he said in an interview with GameDaily. "Years ago I was excited about consoles, but anything that makes development more expensive rather than better, faster, cheaper, I think is a step backwards. When I look at what's happening, it's a bit disappointing because the consoles are running into a place where affordable games are having a rough time getting out there."

Lorne spoke glowingly of the relatively low financial entry threshold on PC. "I'm more excited about what I see happening on PC because I see it allowing for more smaller games to be sold that can be delivered to anyone who's connected at much lower price points."

"PC games also allow people to build their game as they chose," he went on. "There's a big difference between spending $50 or $60 on a game and hoping I love it and buying a game for $5 and then buying additional content for that game, so by the time I have invested $50 in it I really love it and I've personalized it a lot more to what I'm interested in. And I'm sharing this experience with a global, connected audience."

Of course, some would argue that Sony and Microsoft now offer such personalised, inexpensive gaming experiences in the form of Live Arcade and PlayStation Store releases and downloadable content. Let us know your thoughts in the comments threads.

kind of an obvious statement, you'd expect such things from a dev, obviously he wants development to get cheap, easier, faster,he's SORTA right.Sure the development cost has gone up but it's because the average quality of games has also gone through the roof, which means gamers like us get what we want,a versatile and relatively cheaper(if you consider value:money) quality product that's on par with a high end pc.It also gives devs who are willing to spend the time and money a much easier way to get their ideas into the mainstream media, much more quickly.Because imo MGS4 wouldn't have been the phenomenon it was if it had been a pc game.

PSN allows for cheap good games.

There's a big difference in spending $500 on a console and $500 on a video card alone to play PC games the calibur of a MGS4 etc

Hmm... You don't see Insomniac or Gorrila complaining, do you? You'll only complain when you spend 10 mil on a game and it flops. Sorry buddy, do some better market research or just make better games.

It probably should be cheaper to develop for consoles than PCs, if only because you don't have a moving target... all the PS3s are going to work the same and be equivalent. What we need are some "indy" tools for the PS3, affordable game engines with script support, to allow people to create the "lesser" games cheaper.

If the PS3 had a open engine and script language support we'd see an explosion of cheap or free indy games and a lot more commercial games targetted at niche markets.

Whats wrong with putting money into the developement of your product when it has the potential for the highest return on any media product ( see GTA 4 sales). As for cheaper games, I've been enjoying some of the PSN games of late but at the same time I love a blockbuster experience, something I've never seen before.

Aye, it sounds like this lad isn't quite up to speed with PSN and XBLA - plenty of games on there have low starting prices for base offerings and follow-up add-on content (Super Stardust, Pain, PixelJunk Monsters), and I haven't heard Q-Games complain about developing for the PS3.  He might be referring to the last generation?

I agree with first post, but like the article states - why don't they develop the game and get SONY to stick it on PSN? pretty simple.

Also agree with 2nd post, its pretty easy to download games through torrents, ok some games might be well over a Gig or so, but still you can download it.

So what? It's just like movies. They get more expensive to make every day. That's the way video game evolve. Of course we could ga back to the old years of the ZX Spectrum. A game would be a lot cheaper to make.

what happened to the oddworld quintology? i only saw one part, abe's oddysey i'm still waiting for munch's oddysey to be released for ps2. PS3 has the option of downloadable content so they could, nay MUST, release a downloadable version for $5 and a full version on a disc for $60 or they could make the first PS3 game that is on a cd and download the rest

This guy is so g@y, oddworld had so many fans on ps1 and when they scrapped the ps2 sequal to make it an xbox exclusif the game failed, conoles aren't a problem the real problem are guy's like this talking çr@p and making wrong decisions. The more money you invest in your product the better the chances you have in selling it!

well hes absolutely right, plus lets not forget that on PC, you can customize it further with downlodable Mods for the majority of games out there. Ya sure PS3 can allow some UT3 mods, but really anything else? no.

also as for Piracy, think about it, if someone pirated something, its for 1 of 2 reasons:

    1. They want an extended demo to make 100% sure of their purchase, or a demo was never  released
    2. they were never going to buy the game in the first place.

i dont really see PIracy being a huge issue, yeah i mean stealing sucks, but again, its not like people arent donig it for consoles :p i know more than a couple who are sick of the price of video games and spend alot of money making sure they can jsut download it to their favorite console and be on their merry way. :

no matter what you do or where you go, someone will find a way to steal/exploit something.

    @DarkViper,

Yeah, I agree with you. Also, owning a PS3 and a good PC, I can definately say that console titles do not come close to the quality of PC titles, but PC's do cost a bit more money. However, I use my PC for EVERYTHING, and my PS3 only plays games and movies. I like being able to mod things and create things on PC titles. LBP is a going to be a landmark game for the PS3 because of it's customization, but if you own a pc you can do things like that with almost any game. Plus, I like that games are $10 cheaper on the PC. Nowadays, the price/performance on PC components is really amazing as well.Plus, all the decent xbox titles get ported to the PC eventually, and are better in every way usually. All in all, I do think it would be nice if there was one console that ruled the market, making all games available to everyone, and no one would have to put up with the politics involved in the console wars. A PC is close to that "one console" but it still misses out on some great titles like MGS4, LBP etc..

completely agree. all this new technology shouod be making production cheaper. developers make gaming great, not console makers. get devs happy and we'll all be happy

ummm has this guy heard of PSN??? plus computer games may be cheaper to make but you make a whole lot less money back due to piracy anyway and on top of that pc games dont saturate the market like console games do what i mean by that is that more people know about console games than pc games therefore there are more potential buyers this statement doesnt seem well thought out there are options which cater to people like him, things like PSN seriously just about anyone can license a PSN devkit its not that expensive in comparison to a multi million dollar production and new technology is never simple at first, multicore proessing in general is still relatively new but as we come to understand how it works better and learn new more effiicient ways to right code it will become cheaper and easier the bottom line is, as with anything in life, the easier simpler way is easier, but it is not as rewarding in the end

Lorne Lanning has long since abandoned the gaming industry in order to pursue a faltering carrer in movies and TV shows, and now he's whining about how consoles are too expensive, too risky to develop for because he stuck the d**k to his ps1 fanbase and no one bought his games on the XBOX. (Plus sh***y marketing)

The PSN and XBL Arcade offer the same console experience at a significantly reduced price. Fulfledged games have been released at $40 (on the psn at least) and under and have proven that they're capable of generating profit and can cost siginificantly less(provided the dev properly markets the product). Dude is completely out of touch with gaming industry and he has no idea where the industry is headed.

Sounds like Lorne should never have bad mouthed Sony and switched to the losers at Microsoft. Now he's whining about "consoles" not having a cheaper alternative to the $50 game. Xbox Live Arcade may not Lorne, but PS3 has a great alternative in PS Store. Maybe it's just time to rethink your loyalties.

Abe's oddysey rocked.  Best game out when it released. So orginal great narrative story line and superb gameplay ... but this article disappointed me because consoles offer so much more for the user in terms of actually being able to play a game without trying to wrestle with gfx cards or connections ... consoles make this experience easier but not for the developer perhaps?  What about XNA and the low price of developing games on linux for ps3 essentially both are free. Perhaps this is actually referring to the cost of having to pay commission to MS and Sony for selling your game on their networks.  I can understand his beef there!

He has a point....to an extent.

But when you consider the cost of any sort of decent gaming PC and rampant piracy, you start to wonder what the heck is point really is? The money spent on developing for a consoles (PS3) has more chance of being redeemed than creating on a pirate ridden PC ( Or 360 to an extent).

As Edwin said, LIVE & PSN have some very good quality cheap titles for download and the fact that consoles are still much cheaper than PC's.

PSN does not restrict additional content...so whats the problem?

The only thing restrictive about consoles is user created content....but somehow I don't think that would be an issue for Odd-World & its ilk.

There seems to be a trend to push PC gaming this generation, even though so much profit is lossed through Piracy. You have to wonder what the motive is behind this, as a better net profit sounds ridiculous to my ears.

Sorry Mr.Lanning, but your argument sound like BS to me & worthy to ignore.

You know whats even a bigger problem, the same problem all these other people stated PIRACY. Its shredding the PC gaming scene like wildfire. You see spore with 6,000 leech on release day. 6,000 times the cost of the game = bye bye. We need DRM solutions to keep the gaming scene alive. Consoles are the least of your problem oddworld creator.

I've got two things to say that demolishes his retarded logic:

    1. Gaming may now be more expensive for the developers, but for the consumers? Obviously he does not have that in mind, as it can cost up to 2 to 3 times as much to keep up with PC's as it does just to buy a console. When I spend that much money on a PC, you can be sure that I won't be spending **** on software. I'll be hitting up a torrent, you better believe it.

    2. Maybe now that developing costs are more expensive the developers will put a little love into their games like Kojima and MGS4, instead of dishing out trash over and over and over again just to make a quick dollar.

Arent these people the idiots who left their fanbase on sony to program on the original xbox?! Theyre the ones who shot themselves in the foot and went to a more expensive console in the first place. The xbox fanbase didnt know about oddworld so their first game sold as well as garbage! Theyve become an almost unknown for their bad business choices. Sucks to be them!

you really can't compare a 5$ game to a 60$ game... Developpers are free to chose which type of game they want to develop. And the high cost of development is obviously due to the fact that developers are now dealing superior hardwares which support advanced development tools that the previous consoles couldn't support.
