Original Resistance used just 10% of PS3's power

Posted on January 28th, 2008 at 08:54 EDT

The potential of the PlayStation 3 continues to be huge, after it was revealed that launch title Resistance: Fall of Man used just 10% of the console's power.

Touted for its incredible visuals, Resistance used only around 10% to 20% of the PS3's SPU. Details were revealed in official documents released by developer Insomniac Games detailing the development process behind Fall of Man.

Unlike certain other companies, Insomniac regularly discuss SPU utilisation, and in the past they have revealed that the process will see major benefits for years to come.

Insomniac's Chief Creative Officer Brian Hastings told Videogamer.com, "The tech and gameplay teams have moved tons of things over to the SPUs that used to run on the PPU. Collision and physics are entirely running on SPUs now, which allows us to put much more on the screen at once than we were able to with Resistance. Moving more and more code to the SPUs is an ongoing process and I think we'll continue to see major benefits from this for several more years."

This news is sure to whet the appetite of gamers already relishing the game's sequel, Resistance 2, which is due to be released in September.

It also bodes well for future games across the board, with many developers yet to tap in to the full power and resources offered by the powerful PS3.

psn id: gingo.... the visuals weren't great but they were ok for a release game but the rest of the game was top quality and if that was only 10% i'm scared to think what another 90% added onto that could be

Then by guesstimate they are using 40%-50% of the PS3's SPU? I am still looking forward to how fast and how well these games are able to push the system.

These are the kind of developers that deserve respect. They don't make bull sh1t games, and instead of whining like babies about having to adapt to a new system, they actually use it. Resistance 2 looks awesome from those screens. It look like Halo 3, which is awesome graphically. I remember back when it was the original xbox and ps2 good graphics counted as having good anti-aliasing. We've come a long way

10% for a launch title doesn't seem bad at all.  Expecially with EA still throwing crap ports at us while the 360 versions run smooth as glass.

sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but the SPU/PPU has nothing to do with the graphics, its the GPU that does the graphics, all this means is that the processor was only using 10% of its power to process physics etc, i don't think this will make THAT much of a difference graphics wise, maybe better physics etc!!!

This is good news, but just because developers are not using the SPU's to thier full capacity does not mean they the PS3 is using only 10% of the systems power across everything (GPU, memory, CPUs, etc.).

how funny would it be if all they had to do to move code over to the spus was copy and paste the code and theyre just lazy lol but anyways this is great as resistance wasnt overwhelming with visuals and their next games will shine.

Only 10%, i can't stop myself from thinking how much of this power Resistance 2 will utilise. The PS3 is a great console, and i strongly believe that we haven't seen any thing yet on it.

WTF!?!?! 10% and... we get a game like resistance?.... I'm stunned.

I can't wait for devs to better understand the PS3 and it's Cell processor! It's hard to immagine what's achiveable if resistance can be improved 10fold.
