PSU Interviews Bethesda's Pete Hines on Fallout 3Simon Jeffrey, President at SEGA of America, has stated that he believes Sony’s PlayStation 2 will have a longer life span than any other system released to date, and pledged that the company would continue to support the machine for the foreseeable future.
Indeed, Jeffrey believes that the console will continue to sell substantially for the next “two to three years at least”, he told MCV.
“This generation of hardware will have longer legs than any previous generation, and that’s definitely healthy for the industry,” he said. “We expect Sony to price manage the PS2’s shelf life for another two or three years at least. PS2 high profile titles, especially ‘wide market’ and licensed titles, will absolutely be part of the Sega portfolio going forwards.”
SEGA currently has a number of PS2 games in the works, including multiplatform titles Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, The Golden Compas and the long-awaited western release of Yakuza 2, which is exclusive to Sony’s console.

one day saga insults sony, another day they support sony.
A'int that the truth...
If they think there's money in it they'll be nice, at least.
For some reason this article makes me think of the Microsoft designers going crazy in their offices trying to design the xbox 3 in 5 years or so, and then Sony designers sippin drinks knownin they have twice as long life in their PS3 than the other two. Hrm
Hemin said it best.
psn id: gingo... it is the greatest console of all time and i doubt any of the current gen consoles will beat it although i would like to see the ps3 do it
well if thye think its going to keep going for a lil while then why not make some good ps2 games for it Sega.
8th post!
Hey, cool to hear, now bring out those Phantasy Star Remakes you been sitting on for the last 3 years.
shouldn't sony be focusing on getting gamers to buy the PS3? instead of telling people that they can go buy a console that is $99 and has 2-3 years of progress left?
maybe its just me but i kinda want the ps2 to rest in peice already.
I still love my ps2...even though I now play all ps2 games on my ps3. Great system with a ton of wonderful RPG's (Actually, a ton of EVERYTHING)
I think we've seen the last of the big games for PS2, what huge AAA titles are coming this year and in 2008? none that I'm aware of.
yeah the PS2 will sell a few million a year in the remaing years but this will be to a non-gaming user base. The initial PS2 fanbase you had been buying games for the system all these years will eventually move to the PS3.
Sega don't speak, just show us more game and Sony will proof that their system is 10 years survive.
PS2 won't be croaking anytime soon thats for sure. It will go strong as well as there are a couple developers making titles for it. By 2009-2010 most of the support I believe will be towards the PS3.
That sounds about right.
I dont think PS3 will have the same lifespan as PS2 did - it is an anomily caused by the sheer number of titles, easy accessibility, booming market and poor competition. It's quite an achievement and a high point for Playstation. Having said that, I honestly dont think PS2 will be selling anywhere near the same volume this time next year.
I believe that Wii is taking a good percentage of upgrades from PS2 and unless something radical happens with the PS3 - like pricing and backward compatibility, and suitable games...Wii will continue to take PS2 customers.
And now lets see how long the PS3 is going to last.. hmm... let me see, longer!
The ps2 is definately gonna last, but lets hope that happens with the ps3 as well!
For some people PS2 will outlast any other console. For me: i play all my PS2 games on my PS3. PS2 still has good games that come out for it, Mostly in the form of RPGS, which is why i love the PS2. the only thing i wish is that future PS2 games would come with some Widescreen content, not 1080p just widescreen. tho i know some do, some folks forget that there are widescreen tvs somewhere on this planet.
as long as good games are coming out on the ps2, it will still be very popular
i have a different take: "PS2 will start to go out of style real quick."
Now SEGA, release that Virtua Fighter 5 patch for online play and I'll buy all your Sonic games...maybe.
The WIi alone will keep the ps2 around.
Sony hit the nail on the head with the ps2,never again will there ever be such a marvel as the ps2.
psn id: gingoisthelord I agree PS2 will set a record because of its endurance and large stack of brilliant games however i think its downfall shall begin in 2-5 years.
