PS3 UT3 may still see release in 2007, says Rein

Posted on October 3rd, 2007 at 05:55 EDT

Epic Games boss Mark Rein has stated that the PlayStation 3 version of Unreal Tournament 3 may still be released this year, despite publisher Midway confirming it has been pushed back into 2008.

As we reported earlier, Midway announced Tuesday that the company "expects" to deliver the PS3 port of the game some time in early 2008, leaving only the PC version on track for its intended release this November.

However, Rein has said that there is still a possibility the PS3 release may be delivered in 2007: "As a public company, Midway felt an obligation to its shareholders to let them know about the possibility of a delay," he told Next-Gen.biz.

"Our goal is still to get the PS3 version of UT3 in stores before the end of 2007. However, we will only ship it once it’s ready and is the best game we can deliver."

Even so, Rein pointed out that a delay would afford Epic more development time, ensuring all maps featured in the PC version would be included in the PS3 release.

"...A little extra time in development means that now the PS3 version will have all of the same maps as the PC version whereas we previously expected to ship fewer maps on the console”, he noted.

Stay tuned for more developments on Unreal Tournament 3 here at PSU as they become available.

I hope they delay it,  otherwise i'm forced to take a choice between Haze or Unreall 3. Delay can be bad but in this case i'm cool with it. More develop-time means a better game. Hope they can make it as great as the Pc-version

They have already delayed it. I just hope it comes in December before Christmas. Really want to play this game, plus, it could really help Sony's PS3 out :)

This game beats Haze anyday..though i say they should just release it early and release the extra maps as DLC later

Errr why dont midway just release the game with X amount of maps, and once all maps have been finished and updated, why don't they put them on the PSN? Or on the midway server, it should achknowledge users who have bought the game and when maps are ready it could alert us and ready us for a download? i think thats more reasonable rather than making us wait till all maps are available.

I dont like how they say "port". Its not a port at all.

The ship-it-when-it's-ready-argument usually is a sound one, however "timing" (Especially in the PS3's infancy) really is EVERYTHING.

It sad to say that a "lesser" version of UT3 released now, would have far more impact for the platform than a more polished later.

The PS3, Sony and it's fanbase NEED this NOW.

Sadly they (Sony and it's affiliated developers) have already missed the Halo3 response boat.

The real PS3 big boys are coming (So they keep telling us) and the real window of oppurtunity for UT3 is now, and not later.

Epic/ Midway know this.

I'm sure tEpic would have got slagged off/ grumbled at if the PS3 version(Not port!) had shipped with comparatively less maps.

But honestly that just simply sounds like an excuse.

So what?

From the VERY beginning, the PS3 was going to have less maps?

And only now they've decided to rectify this?

Please!

I like Mark Rein and Epic's general output, but Sony needs this now.

Sony may have a better machine, the perfect controller (The current lack of Rumble notwithstanding) Blu-Ray (Do remember the Hi Def battle is not ACTUALLY won yet!) ethos, gameplan and overall ideas, but comparatively Microsoft simply has eff loads of money.

And sadly that's all they need.

Microsoft WILL win the war long term, if Sony and it's developers continue to lose these smaller battles.

Delaying the game will cause xbox advantage in sales and it won't be pretty for PS3.......UT3 exclusivity for PS3 is only for a few months..... think about it...

EPIC has stated, IIRC, that even if the game gets dealyed it will have that head start on the PS3. However, why is there no real release date for this "on target for a 07" release doesn't sound like they will make the end of Novemember to me! I want them to ship a good product but a delay over maps that could be released via PSN for free would be the better path IMHO. That or heck, include those maps and then some PS3 EXCLUSIVE MAPS....since we won't have PS3 to PC crossplat gaming like we "thought" we might have!

I think Epic really just wants to wait until the install base in the PS3 is higher, which is stupid because UT3 could really be a big system seller for the holiday season.

Just to let you guys know they arent delaying the game for the maps they delayed the game and decided to add the maps because of the delay.  Im happy they doing something good in the process even thouhgh I had this game on my number 1 to get this year over all the other games.  Maybe if they relase in late december that be really good after haze and before killzone.  Good breakage in between all 3 of them.
