Take a look at Mirror's Edge's upcoming demoSpeaking ahead of NPD hardware data, Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter has said that Sony’s PlayStation 3 has managed to outsell the Xbox 360 for the month of February 2008 in the US.
Providing these claims materialise accurately, it would mark the second time the PS3 has successfully outsold its Microsoft counterpart in the region after doing so in January.
The race would ultimately prove to be a close call between the two platforms, however, with Patchter predicting sales of 260,000 and 250,000 for the PS3 and Xbox 360, respectively.
Elsewhere, the analyst also forecast sales of 225,000 for the PlayStation Portable, and 245,000 for the PlayStation 2.
"In January, PS3 hardware demand continued to improve, and we believe that PS3 sales will gain momentum over the balance of the year with the victory of the Blu-ray format over HD-DVD," said Pachter.
"Xbox 360 hardware sales were relatively weaker, with the company stating that it experienced shortages caused by misjudging holiday demand. We expect the Xbox 360 shortage to continue in February, and have forecast relatively flat month-over-month sales."
Pachter added that he expects software revenues to rise 27 per cent over the previous year to USD 575 million.
Full NPD figures will be released on March 13.

PS3 is still behind on good games, it's not going to be a PS2 like I thought
How old are you? It took PS2 10 months (!) before it STARED to see anything good (Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec) and then there was another drought until Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2 released 5 months after that (and FFX was "early")! I'm old enough to remember that. I sold my Dreamcast and suffered almost two years. And if by "good games" you mean "mountains of FPS's", I hope you NEVER get what you want. The PS3 will be around as long as the PS1...there will be all kinds of games. Sorry if you can't see that from where you sit.
This is just the start of the trend, it is obvious that the PS3 is going to get stronger and stronger, it has everything on its side, Console heritage, The primary next gen format, amazing hardware and some great games both now and to come. Its all good from now on for the PS3, the futures bright! the futures black shiney with a little bit of chrome trim!
@Shin
And sorry if that sounds snotty (I really am), but people need a sense of history if they're going to be judgemental.
i agree with odium, this sort of thing doesn't happen overnight. and to be honest i've never seen the games industry so alive with games and prospect of games. the ps3 is no doubt going to be better than the ps2, because it can give you so much more than the ps2 did. its only a year in and we've got games like GTA4 and MGS2, gran turismo prologue to name a few. if you look at early games for the ps2 they were no where near the full capabilities of that system so i think the ps3 will keep on giving for at least another 7 years
ps3 will win
I bet the folks over on the XBox sites are (nervously) calculating how long it'll take for the PS3 to catch up on 10k per month. I love that argument *sarcasam*
What they wont admit is that the PS3 has a little thing we like to call "momentum." going on.
all this talk about sells got me alittle frisky, i havent bought a game in a while and i only played hevenly sword and uncharted on demo............so im about due for a few good games
PS3 out sold xbox 360 because of shortage supplies yea right , what's a dumb excused. let's stick to the fact that PS3 is the better system.
psn id: gingo.... of course the ps3 will outsell the xbox this year becasue of the more impressive lineup of games but i think microsoft will have a few big guns to pull out in 2009
This should be a suprise to no one and for many reasons.
1. Microsoft truly supports digital downloads. The HD-DVD bit was to mess with PS3 sales.
2. Microsoft rushed their system out to get the early sales which is what happened
3. Sony has more of a worldwide appeal and the only two negatives to it were that the price(though worth it for what you got) just was not, initially, consumer friendly and that the games took a while to come out. The price has decreased and the games are beginning to come out now.
PS3 is the Barrack Obama of gaming!
Well, the PS3 is obviously not close to outselling the Xbox in the US yet. I think this is the second month since Nov. 06 that there's been a marginal victory over there. In the European market the Playstation has been selling more than the Xbox for quite a while and will almost definitely overtake their sales before the year is over. Even the Wii which is doing so well everywhere is marginally beaten by the PS3 in some weeks. It will no doubt take large price cuts coupled with exclusive, sought-after software before the US really starts to warm to the PS3.
Lp47,Odium,i think he was referring to the drought of JRPGs we have on the ps3 right now(outside of Japan that is),but i agree ps2 had a lot of crappy software in it's first year,if we actually compare the two year by year,ps3 definitely wins in software diversity.
