PS3 browser gets protection

A security vendor has developed software to protect your PS3 in a similar way to how antivirus protection works on PC.

It is something that may have slipped your mind whilst browsing the net through your PS3, but Trent Mico Inc. have now promised to block malicious web pages and those deadling in sex, drugs and violence.

The company say it’s the first of its kind in the gaming industry and it was released early this month as part of a PS3 upgrade and will be free until April.

However, some industry experts are questioning the need for protection of consoles and whether people will pay to protect their PS3s in the way they do their PCs.

"I think the jury's still out," said Daniel Ives, an analyst at Friedman Billings Ramsey. "Over the coming years, as the console becomes more common in terms of Web browsing, that's when you can really try to gauge what type of opportunity it is for the antivirus vendors."

With gamers now using their consoles for a lot more than just standard gaming, the Tokyo-based company use their technologies to identify websites that host malicious code and those that serve as launch pads for scams to steal passwords, financial data and other personal information.

As well as this, the software has a parental control function that enables the parent to prevent access to sites that depict illegal activities or sexually oriented material, with a password required to access that feature.

Trend Micro hope that it will make people feel safer browsing the Internet through their consoles.

the only thing i fear is that they start to make virus software too that can affect the ps3 in order to sell in the future a better antivirus software.

That's all I need. A console that gets virus. Consoles are supposed to be easy to use. That's why I like them and hate PCs. If my PS3 gets any virus, I m gonna sell it and start playing on my PC.

you can browse porn as long as you have the master acount (or have access to the password if the user of the master acount choose to use password protection). the porn blocker is a voluntary. isnt that obvious?!

What a load of crap, this is just another money making idea, an no doubt they probably will release some of their own viruses just to cause fear and panic so silly people flock to the shops and spend loads of their hard earned cash on yet another piece of software.
