PS3 development hasn't caught up with 360, says EA

John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts, has said that the company’s experience in developing games for the PlayStation 3 has not yet caught up with its efforts with Microsoft’s Xbox 360.
Speaking during a conference call today, Riccitiello admitted: "Not quite. There's no doubt that Electronic Arts, along with many other publishers, had some challenges essentially meeting the technical specifications effectively on the PlayStation 3.
"Games where we led development on the PS3 platform, like Burnout, which is doing very well on the market today, we had no issue at all.”
"But in circumstances where we either led with the Xbox 360 or ran parallel production, for the most part, we're still experiencing some delay on the PS3. It's a little bit more of a challenging development environment for us.
Despite this, he stated that the issue is not as apparent as it was nine months ago, although the team still has its fair share of catching up to do.
"It's probably only a third of a problem for us as it was [nine months ago]. But there still remains some catching up to do on the engineering side for the PS3."

well that's because most developers use the 360 more than the PS3 to make their d@mn games... and that's only because it's easier to make on the 360... maybe developers should stop being so damn lazy... using the 360 as the easy way out.... i seen this Ubisoft video once and all the developers we're using 360"s... i didn't see 1 d@mn PS3 till they started talking about HAZE in the video... ain't that some sh1t...

Solution: lead for the PS3. I mean look at Burnout - the quality is better and they admitted themselves that it wasnt as much of a problem leading on PS3 and porting to the other systems as it was the other way round. Am I missing something here?

See they can do it: Quote: Games where we led development on the PS3 platform, like Burnout, which is doing very well on the market today, we had no issue at all. In time I believe that the PS3 will be the lead platform on all counts.
You dont hear smaller developers like Insomniac moaning and complaining about how difficult it is, they just get on with it and do a damnd good job as well. Problem is with EA is its all about money and how much they can make for as little effort as possible. Burnout is good but its the first decend game to come out of the EA camp, all the others are lame revamps with minimal improvements. And because they are so huge they feel they dont have to make the effort, so lets not all go buy tiger woods 09 etc (no doubt released this spring) and line their lazy pockets just to play yet another reincarnation with OOooo wow another course and a slightly different control system.

I have to agree that the delopment should be as easy as possible. It should be easy to program for the PS3. Sony *has* to provide all tools, knowledge, help and support to developers. I think that when Sony designed the PS3 it should have thought about this problem. At least is good to know that developers are starting to catch it up.

We keep hearing this but then others say they are having no problems now, perhaps you should employ better staff EA!

Agree with Limanima. Can't believe after over 1.5 years PS3 development the team at EA don't know everything about the PS3. Sony should be seeing these games and providing more help, tools, info and example code to show devs the best ways to get power out of the PS3's CELL BE & RSX. Obviously other devs have figured it out, surely Sony's in-house teams know, it is damaging the PS3's reputation and should have been sorted by now.

Amen to that. -

I was going to say that much smaller devs seem to be having no real problems, so the problem obviously lies within EA - but richkaos pretty much said it already.
As for this comment: "Games where we led development on the PS3 platform, like Burnout, which is doing very well on the market today, we had no issue at all.”
Well, DUH! That's because it was developed by Criterion, who seem to have a clue what they're doing. I'm afraid you can't take credit for that one, EA - you're only the publisher!

psn id: gingo.... well he just discovered himself how to solve this problem, make PS3 the lead platform and both versions turn out very well so whats the point in making 360 lead or doing parallel production when it doesn't make the best versions.... c'mon EA bit of common sense

EA has seen a drop n the quality games that they are putting out.... but i think if they keep going with this trend there sells are going to drop just as well......

So if I am reading this correctly they are just admitting that games which have the PS3 as a lead have no issues while the MP titles with the 360 as lead have issues?
Putting my problem solving skills to the test.................

@gingo - some how a big duh should have came to me when he answered his own dumb question of falling behind. :/ Its never a good idea to be making two different versions at the same time, the care on making it as good as it will be deteriates.

I'm so sick of all EA's efforts or lack thereof to support the ps3. Insomniac has had no trouble using the machine's power. If EA would just decide to explore the cell for a change rather than try to program it like a 360 (which it obviously never was) they'd start putting out good games, which hasn't happened for a while.

So you get paid to develop games. Learn what you need to do. Stop doing interviews and figure out what needs to be done.

More complaining? Learn how to code for it to get the best results, keep at it, don't put half the effecort in just because it's different, and stop blaming the hardware. If other companies have made great games on the system then EA just needs to figure out how to do it also.

The once was biggest publisher in the world is having the biggest problems. The real problem is that they have too many Licensed games and reproductions of the same franchises. They need to take away their resources on these games and use them to create epic games instead. Square, Konami, Insomniac, Valve, Epic, Bioware etc have had at least 1 amazing epic game in the last decade, I don't think EA has.
