PS3 firmware updates to reduce but increase in quality

Quality over quantity is how the old saying goes. There is no reason to having a lot of something if there is no real purpose. At least this is how Eric Lempel, PlayStation Network director thinks.

See, Sony is known for releasing PSP and PS3 firmware update after update. Some of these updates where much needed while some like PS3 firmware v1.1 proved to be pretty mild as all it introduced were an Account Management Icon in your friends list. Now as Lempel explains, Sony wants to only release these updates where there is great quality.

"Many of our upgrades have offered tremendous value to our users so I think they appreciate getting these new features as soon as they are ready. We're certainly going to continue to plan on combining features so we can roll out fewer, but more significant firmware updates.

"With millions of users using our products in different ways and connecting them to a wide variety of equipment, there is the potential, on occasion, that an unforeseen issue will be brought to our attention. We like to take corrective action as fast as possible to ensure our users are having the best experience with our products. The best way for us to do this is through firmware updates. We are looking at ways of making this process easier going forward."

Am pleased that they are going to be less frequent. It had started to annoy me that I had to download update after update for my PS3.

i don't mind the constant updates, the reality is that users feel better with constant updates because they feel their needs are being treated (even if they're not) but i think its ok as long as they are good updates.

Like the article states, the QUALITY of the updates far outweighs the quantity they released last year.  Half of them were patches to fix up the ones they previously released, that due to the fact some people encountered problems with the updates.

Additionally, some of them were really poor!  I don't mind quarterly update if they're to make big impacts on the XMB, PSN or the way we live!  I'd rather see something I will often use, rather than something I may remember that's there if I come across it!

All in all, it's good to know they've addressed their evaluation on the updates.

@IRONMAIDEN: Your right. It is old. I don't want to see any more updates until they ad the XMB accessible in game.

The more time they spend on refining the features in the firmware, the better they will turn out. (no firmware issue  from no on I presume)

I dont mind the updates - as long as they are small in size. The problem I have is they take anywhere from 1-3 hours to download on a 512k broadband connection - and thats it. Its easier for some that have massive connections, but for us average joe's that can only afford the bare minimum on broadband it sucks big time.

512k?... what is that?.... isn't  the minimun speed to be considered broadband 2mbps?.... @ $15 a month.... actually 5 years ago 700+kbps connections was considered broadband.. not anymore though... i think you should look into a real broadband service.... because your likely being taken advantage of....  i use an 8mbps service.... and i think its pretty slow for its price.... but you can get good deals..... just a thought.. i hate when companies make claims that should be illegal.. and no, i'm not leaving a comment on the article.....

I just want in game XMB. very simple. should have been there from the start. screw playstation home, i just wanna play games - sony i dont think the majority of consumers want to spend time running around a little second life world, most would rather play awesome games SO START PUTTING THAT TIME MONEY AND ENERGY INTO QUALITY 1ST PARTY TITLES. PS HOME WILL BE GAY!

Less is more in most cases but dont delay game demos or DLC just because we can combine them into next week. Think about what they said. miilions of people want this stuff. Also make the firmware updates optional if you want to update or not depending on if something good for you is in it.

Y'know, for all the flack that Microsoft take they do provide an excellent service.  XBL just works, everything about it seems to mesh and there's rarely any issues (aside form the MASSIVE connection problems just now...).  When all is said and done XBL is, at the moment, a superior service.  Microsoft therefore only have to do a full update every few months, usually every 3 - 4 months...Oh and in the UK broadband speed is considered anything from 512kbps upwards...granted it's a terrible speed but it is still considered a broadbadn speed.  Heck, i only have a 4Mbps connection and that ain't fast enough for me...i would prefer faster but i refuse to pay a fortune for it...

I live out in the a rural area and we dont have access to ultra fast broadband. The only thing we have (which I use) is a radio frequency style (think cell phone signal) and its 2mb.

Sony has received many complaints about the frequency of firmware updates. I'm good with this as long as I don't wait up to three months to get updates that have been ready a long time ago!

I know I've said this somewhere before but what happens when there is the need for patches? A major firmware could be released and this could cause problems for some PS3's and we need fixes and maybe even more fixes after that.
