Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, has confirmed the previously rumored firmware update, PS3 firmware v2.80, on the U.S. PlayStation Blog.
"The playback quality of some PlayStation 3 format software has been improved [in v2.80]," states Lempel.
Currently, the update is available on the PlayStation Network, but not mandatory. If you turn on your PS3, you will not be prompted to download the firmware update, but if you manually navigate to and click 'System Update,' you should be able to view and download firmware v2.80.
Users are reporting faster access to Trophy data and general improvements to XMB load times after installing the update.

@8. Not everyone can just download stuff when they want. Some people have bad speeds and it takes a good 5 hours to download, other people also have download limits, and find that downloading a 150mb update that doesn't do match is just a waste of download quota.

The XMB seems to definitely be moving the data from my hugely stocked 320gb 5400rpm hard drive faster.

@15 what only 320gb?
and i dont think it wasnt worth it i think the jump to 2.76 to 2.80 isnt very big and they will wanna release something big at 3.00 so they just had to get this one out of the way so they gave something small to get it out of the road then something else alright for 2.90 then big for 3.00
its just coming up with small ideas

Ha comment 15 made me laugh. Ohh 320GB! 5200rpm! Look at you! You are a special one xD
I am downloading now. I personally don't mind updates like this. I did find the the XMB and trophy section slow anyway so it's all welcome.
Keep the updates coming I say =D

@ 20, 22, 27 & 31. I thought you guys were all being pathetic and treating me like dirt for no good reason. Then I re-read my post. It came off like I was thinking I was great for having a "hugely stocked" 320gb with 5400rpm. Just so you know, thats not the case.
I was in a hurry when I posted it and just typed without thinking. I was trying to point out to anyone else with a reasonably large HDD in their PS3, that having 5400rpm, which is standard really, gets quite slow as you fill the hard drive. I think a 7200rpm would come into it's own as you start to fill your drive, stopping laggy thumbnails and such. I think it even cause a few laggy sessions of GTA IV for me.
My major point however was that with the latest update, a fairly full, larger HDD with a slower or average rpm, may work a little faster on XMB, like it is for me. I wasn't trying to brag. I naively assumed that heaps of people have larger HDD's now including 500gb (I've heard of a couple bigger too) and that mentioning my HDD was just for details.
If anyone thinks I'm big-headed about my setup after this, then good luck to you. :)

@33 No mate, you weren't showing off at all. Infact I've got the same sized hard drive as well. Thanks for the pointers regarding different speeds anyway!
if you've got a 60gb console like I have, the games do ask for large installs so an upgraded hard drive is pretty much useful. They don't even cost the earth either, like I picked mine up for £40 or so from Amazon. It's sad to see others make such petty remarks about it when you were only trying to explain a few issues regarding the drive. It's good to hear the update makes moving around on the XMB faster anyway!

@13 You are a complete and utter moron. First of all if it takes 5 hours to download an update as small as that then the person shouldnt be online at all cause they have dial up. Second its not an optional update. You have to download it in order to play games or log on to psn. Seriously people, think before you speak.

#15 was obviously not showing off...i donno where you guys get the idea. 320gb isn't a big deal nowadays...in fact, if someone is going to buy something below 320gb, then they're wasting their time. and he said 5400 rpm, that's one of the lowest you can get. I'm sure if he was showing off, he would've said something like 500gb with 7200rpms or 10000 rpms.
Take a chill pill.

The lack of some of the key features such as cross game chat ... three years after the system has launched...shows how out of touch the SONY's firmware developers are (that is SCE "JAPAN" for those that don't know)
If it was SCEA controlling the FW dev and update we would have had those cool features that everyone has been asking for shortly after the launch of the PS3.

bleh..give me crossgame chat allready. I honestly thought that sony would think of that at once, but i've been waiting years now :/ and they gave me text-chat instead! (2.70 or something) wich just made me even more angry. I dont want to textchat to other friends wile playing other games! i want to talk to them while i play my fps games, while my buddy plays his racing games, and the other plays football! but no, we all have to log in to a chat room, not doing anything else but talking :/

People are aware that each update alters the xmb and paves the way for the next update. There is every chance that changes you don't see will ultimatly contribute to things like cross game chat etc.
