PS3 first party content is "the best out there" says Hirai

Kazuo Hirai, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI), has said that he believes the PlayStation 3 possesses far greater exclusive content than that of its rivals, pointing to the machine’s “unrivalled” first party support and Blu-ray capabilities.
Speaking to MCV on the subject Final Fantasy XIII’s recent move to the Xbox 360, in addition to Microsoft’s investment in exclusive downloadable content, Hirai commented:
“On the exclusivity front – whether it’s downloadable or not – one of the unrivalled strengths we have, and we’ve proven this time and time again, is the power of our internal worldwide studios. Our first-party product is obviously platform exclusive and is the best out there.
"We’ve talked about a raft of great titles, whether that’s Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, SoCom, God Of War 3, Killzone 2, MaG, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift.”
Elsewhere, Hirai pointed to the inclusion of Blu-ray functionality in every PS3 console, which affords developers the opportunity to include exclusive content such as behind the scenes footage and interviews.
"Secondly, if we talk about Blu-Ray, there’s a lot of capacity there. Our discussion with a lot of the publishers is about how the PS3 version of a game has the capacity to exclusive things consumers will be interested in – interviews with the makers of the game, documentary on the franchise or 'making of...' footage.
"That’s as well as additional weapons, levels, tools and characters. Those things very much differentiate our offerings over and above other versions of the same game.”

I'm the one that always complains about Kaz and his mouth, but he's right. The Sony 1st party stuff is the best by a little (over Nintendo). But if you've outgrown the excellent Nintendo line up, it's tops by far. By far. But whenever anyone lists the great Sony 1st party stuff, they always forget about MLB The Show. Since 06 (its debut 1 year after the death of EA's MVP Baseball), it has been the #1 Baseball franchise BY FAR. No one gives it its propers. So I'm doing it now. Those games are great.

i would agree with his statement i think sony have some of the best games, but i cant help wonder how many more third party exclusives sony could end up losing, microsoft have a huge wallet and seem to be throwing money towards third party producers. it's good that they(Sony) want to prove that thier console is the best but i wouldnt mind if they forked out some money to try and keep some exclusives. it's really disapointing when exclusives go multiplat ( especially the exclusives that i grew up playing such as final fantasy and DMC4) i wouldnt be supprised to hear that microsoft threw money at killzone2 ( not that the game will work or even fit on an xbox )

Interviews? 'Making of' footage? Additional weapons? Doesn't interest me. What happened to using Blu-ray to make bigger and more complex games that are 'not possible on the 360'? How about some more of that on Blu-ray and less of the bull****, or are we now saying that Blu-ray is just a perk that's only really any good for HD movies?

If this years first party sell very well then we can expect sony working more with third parties, but until then i doubt we will see more than first and second party efforts since sony is losing money with each sold PS3 and all their resources are being used towards first party efforts.

They still can make bigger games for the ps3 with the blu-ray, no doubt about that but the thing is who's gonna do that? The only time we'll see something along those lines is the 1st party games. Multi-plat developers only want to get the same experience on every console except if they're paid to create additional exclusive DLC. The technology is out there, people just need to use it properly.

The Sony first party games are the best?
I'm sorry...did no one else play Heavenly Sword??????????????????????
Seriously, I'm all for sony doing well and Iove my PS3 but the first party games are, at best, average.
You can't factor in games that haven't been released as no-one knows what they're like...i want Killzone 2 to be great but i don'tk now if it will be. I want Little Big Planet to be amazing but until i've played it i can't say that it's the best...
However, based on the first party titles that Sony have already put out...i'm not convinced...the ONLY game that has blown me away on my PS3 is MGS4...and it took them a year and a half to bring that one out...

Hey, JD, you ever hear of Uncharted or God of War? You think those are average? I guess you'd rather be playing viva pinata then.

@JD
Kaz is mostly referring to upxoming games. little big planet, god of war 3 etc.
You can't just make impression out of one game. in this case heavenly sword.
"ololololol all the ps3 's first party games are average because i didn't like heavenly swrod loololololo" -

i agree with what he saying and it is one of the reason`s i bought a ps3 thinking the ps3 would have loads of exclusives because u can do more on the ps3 and thinking even multi platform games the ps3 version would be better n bigger, just doesnt happen that way cause people r being cheap n making everything to fit on the 360 hence 360 is ruining this generation of gaming...in in reality the 360 is on life support and only microsofts money is keeping it alive

Sony constantly reminds us that 2008 is the year of the PS3. I believe Sony its just that the majority of the games come in Fall Winter and Spring 09. They always reward us for our patience so im still optimistic with these games, R2 will be epic!!

As a true gamer and im not talking about the beganning of the ps3. I'm talking about back in the 80's. Eveytime someone from Sony start talking about what sony has it makes me sick. I know we have a great line up, but its the same everytime and just about everyone of those games have been delayed. So it would be nice if they stop talking about what we have and work on getting them out. I don't want to be a killer to what he is saying but most of these games were post to came out already at the beginning this year. You have to feel me on this one.

Well instead of making promises they should be making games without delayes because that's what we gamers want! The ps3 is the most powerfull console this gen but most dev's don't take the effort to take the advantage of sonys technology! Sony should lock up Hirai and let him out once all the games he mentioned hit the shelfs, than maybe he might seem more credible with his statements

Out of all them games they haven't even mentioned the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 which is undoubtedly the best 'driving simulator' (as polyphony like to put it) out there. If there's any first party title that has made it's mark for outstanding quality Gran Turismo is definitely it...how could you leave it out?? Kaz you noob!!!!

its really up to the developers....sony pretty much give them the space in the blu-ray and its up to the dev whether they want to use it or not..and I wish some of them would wise up and throw in more content from the get go....I highly doubt MS gonna come and take away their family because they put content in a ps3 game that couldnt not fit on a xbox disc.....
.the industry right now is soo controlled its ridiculous with money leading the charge....I wish most devs would grow a pair do what makes the most sense -

Hirai is correct about the advantages of blu-ray, now if only a developer would actually DO that :p

Most of the first party games have been without delays. The only exceptions are pretty much GT5 and (non game) Home. Most FP titles have come out on the date or released earlier (lair, uncharted) then they said they would.

i dont like kaz harai that much either but he is right, i dont buy a sony console for dlc or maybe 1 or 2 third party games (mgs4) but its their first party exclusives is the main reason why i buy a sony console ultimately it wouldnt really matter to me if mgs4 could be done on 360 i still get to play it AND have those great first party exclusives, MS is wasting their time and money nullifying these third party titles when we still have sonys first party line up the only way they could "kill ps3" is if they bought sony

The problem with kaz's comments is not wheather there true or not, its the fact he's not showing and proving. Yea we all know there is much more room for more content on the ps3, but why havent games like cod4, etc. put more content than there xbox counterparts. Maybe because there so concerened with getting the game running equally before they even think about extra content.

Are you guys aware that Sony has over 20 different developers studios right under their wing spread all accros the globe? Sony's 1st party support is larger than microsoft's and nintendo's combined. Thats why I was glad when Sony said they are not going to throw money at 3rd party developers for exclusive, instead they are going to put more money into their 1st party. So to me, that means that in the future, Sony will be creating more great exclusives that MS cant touch. Most 3rd party devs wont be giving anyone exclusives anymore anyway. Then what will the 360 be left with? Nothing but multiplatform games.

I have to say that he would make those comments. I mean hes not going to put down his own people right? I will say this though I own 2 PS3's and I have very few games for the system. I am a fickle gamer but I am not intrested in Gran Turismo. I will say it is an awesome game but It doesnt appeal to me. I could care less about Motor storm. I did love Uncharted and as for Metal Gear I just havent played any further than the first save point. Reason being is that the others have turned me off and yes I own every metal gear. I guess its Japanese culture for snake to cry or get all sensitive when a female is killed but anyway. I want the Syphon Filters and the God of Wars. I dont care for RFOM and yes I have it. I am waiting for SOCOM and they better do it right and release more maps right away. I will say this though. I loved SOCOM 1 and 2 but I hated 3. Just because you can put more players in a game doesnt mean you should. Zipper made SOCOM 3 and I hope they dont make the same mistake with MAG. AGAIN JUST BECUASE YOU CAN PUT MORE PLAYERS IN A GAME DOESNT MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD.

I love my PS3 just like the rest of you, but DUH!!! What else is he supposed to say. This is like when an athlete guarantees a win, no one will ever say "I think we are going to lose this game." So as nice as it is to hear this I will take it as a grain of salt.

No doubt Sony is holding down the 1st party front but it is important to treat third party devs with some respect as well. We don't want Sony to end up like Nintendo with third party games that are crap and the only good games coming out on the system being first party.

I'm glad he mentions downloadable. I think Sony has won in this area over anyone in terms of quality and innovation. Games like... StarDust HD, PixelJunk Monsters, Eden, Elephunk, Tekken DR Online, etc. are literally the best downloads anywhere.
Also Warhawk, and Motorstorm are best in class EASILY!
If Kaz says the 1st party stuff will be ahead of everyone else, I'm inclined to believe him.

@ Lord_Von_PS3
He was talking about Multiplatform games. Obviously the devs won't make the Ps3 version 20hrs longer than the 360 because it has more space. That comes back to the 360 problem beeing a nail in the foot of the Ps3 stopping it from getting greater 3rd party games lol :P

Agreed. MicroSoft's first party support is a complete joke compared to Sony's. There always having to rely on third party exclusives to sell their console and buying out once third party exclusives from PlayStation 3 in order to keep alive in the market.
Its obvious that they won't admit it but I find MicroSoft to be complete ass***** because they brag on how Sony has lost third party exclusives when them themselves are losing third party exclusives as well, then of course third party exclusives are dying out quite fast and if they don't hurry and get strong first party support. They'll end up dead in the gaming market for their console because at the end of the day. Sony has extremely strong first party support and most third party games go on PlayStation 3 to begin with.
