Sony Computer Entertainment Australia announced today that the PlayStation 3 has sold 238,000 units in the region since its launch there in March 2007.

The figure puts PS3 ahead of its predecessor in terms of first year sales in the territory, which sold through 146,000 units during its first 12 months on the market.

Additionally, the company also applied a Q3 2008 release date for the forthcoming PlayTV add-on in Australia, a feature that essentially acts as the PS3’s equivalent of a personal video recorder.

    Wow that's quite high.

I was at a game shop last night and they said they were selling PS3's like stupid and the owner was saying he'd expect the PS3 to be the #1 Xmas present.

Can't wait for the Play-tv add-on will be great stuff.

It's amazing that the PS3 is selling faster than the PS2 in Australia. Also, this week the PS3 hit 12 million consoles sold worldwide, and it was stated in an article that the PS3 achieved 12 million consoles sold 5 months faster than the Xbox 360 did.

The PS3 may be 3rd in total consoles sales, but it's only a matter of time before the PS3 catches up to the Xbox 360 and I know that it's possible.

However, by judging the total PS3 console sales in Australia, I can see why Australia almost always gets everything last like games and such because it's not Sony's major gaming market. I guess gaming isn't really that big in Australia or something.

There is no 'lack of gamers' in Australia, theres a lack of population, only 21 million of us. Therefore there should be 3.4 million consoles sold in the U.S.A

any news on the PVR for america? @AclayPS3 I don't know if what you are saying about Australia is correct. You do realize that there are only about 21 million people living there right? There's 40 to50 times that in both Europe and America. There just aren't many people living in Australia compared to other markets.

As TheRealCarbonfibre stated, for America to have the same level of PS3 gamers amongst its population it would have sold over 3.4 million PS3's by this stage, not including the four month headstart you guys got :)
