BIA: Hell's Highway 'Realism' trailerThe one single thing that made the original PlayStation such a smash hit was a variety of things. Its quality of titles in conjunction with the large library it had.
Furthermore, the PlayStation had the ability to draw in non-hardcore gamers, the casual gamer. That trend carried over with the PlayStation 2 but what about the PlayStation 3?
At a recent interactive entertainment conference, Tal Kerret, Oberon Media chairman, pushed the issue that the PS3 is currently not really for casual gamers.
Oberon Media just recently bought into the rights of iPlay and PixelPlay, which expands their casual games reach into mobile, interactive TV, PC and console softwere. Oberon Media has had strong success with the Xbox 360 in relation to Xbox Live Arcade, but this has not yet transitioned onto the PS3 or even Wii.
Tal Kerret commented that he does not believe that the Wii is a great outlet for people to download games, but when asked about the PS3, he commented:
"We focus on where can we get the fastest reach to consumers, the fastest way to provide them with the content, and the easiest way where we can provide some service to the developers. If we can't bring value to the developers, then for us it is just yet another outlet that we take our content and port it to.”
"If it is a porting question, then I would ask my self many other questions. What comes first? We are dealing with so many things, as you've seen."
However it was hinted that they will look at content for other consoles besides the Xbox 360: "So we'll take some of these games, yes, to the Wii, the PS3...the PS3 is not yet ready for it, but when they are ready. “
Interesting, they believe that the PlayStation 3 is not on par yet to appeal to casual gamers but yet they did not give a clear definitive reason as to why. Hopefully with the release of Home their stance will change, as it [Home] will be a unique form of online interaction that could allow for an easy and manageable way for Oberon to place downloadable content.

They've clearly never fired up a copy of Super Stardust or Calling all Cars on a PS3.
it aint for casual gamers at the moment face it and dont just say 'No your wrong it cant be'
Ryoma, what are you doing in this forum?Youre just a xbot trolling in PS3 sites,go play with your fellow xboxfanatics,or maybe your just so unsecure about your crapbox.
Super Stardust, Calling all Cars, flow, ratchet & clank all of these games I see being accessable to casual gamers.
And ryoma why would you tell us not to say that when that is exactly what they are saying
"Interesting, they believe that the PlayStation 3 is not on par yet to appeal to casual gamers but yet they did not give a clear definitive reason as to why."
Thats just like saying to someone else that people cannot understand how to play gran turismo 5...... why..... uh.... just take my word for it.
Umm...it's not selling...because it does not appeal to the casual gamer.
What are you guys debating?
If it appealed to casual gamers then they would all go out & buy one. I don't understand your argument otherwise. Ryoma is correct. Half you guys say that Wii sales figures should not be compared to PS3 because they dont appeal to the same maket... Sorry what market was that again? Oh yes Wii appeals to the casual market...
Some of you guys even say BC isn't important because you have to play PS3 games only.... and even then they have to be big Bluray games .... "xxxx" is only possible on powerfull Cell rah rah, "xxxx" is only possible with Bluray capacity - that doesnt sound casual freindly to me.
Where is the "selection" of games, Where is the Playstation "library" now? What a half dozen constitutes a library...lol. Sony had the PSX & PS2 libraries but stuck that advantage up their bottoms. Wow what geniuses!
Guys (and any gals) please dont instantly label people "Xbox fans" just because they can think for themselves and are happy to debate something... I can guarantee that I have more Playstation games than any of you (possibly combined). But I dont just act like a bimbo cheer leader for Sony. I want them to do the right thing and I'll call out the things I see as wrong.
Im a casual gamer and i have one
Casual gamers dont frequent Playstation fan sites... Your not a casual gamer. Your a frequent, obsessed crazed, fanatical gamer - like the rest of us. :)
Your also a Leopard who wears headphones and can type... that just aint a casual kinda thing...
Interesting point of view Mr Kerret has. If you ask any Xbot or Wiitard, PlayStation is THE 'casual gamer' machine! BS of course, but there you go!
Oh here we go. it is these terms that get people in a tizzy. What is a casual gamer? Those people who like a type of genre? Those who do not play alot of games? Or those who play games but for relaxation and not really care about beating it or not.
Even if you use any of the above, chances are any system is for a casual gamer. There are PS3 owners that fit that bill as well as 360 and Wii. The Wii is winning over more converts from people who never really were gamers but that still doesn't change the personal preferance of a casual gamer.
My last boss who knew nothing about video games and really didn't play them owned a PS2 and a PSP and chances are he is going to buy a PS3 just to play GTAVI. Either he doen't know or does not care that it is a MP title but that is the mentality of some casual gamers I have known.
Wheres my big red "NO DUH" stamp, any console with the PS3s price tag aint for casuals, go bye a wii you pussie gamers
I'l do it.
That's not casual. Casual gaming fits a lot of different categories. just because a game has onlie capabilities dosent make it casual. Games survived 2 decades before internet gaming ever existed. Casual means that there's not only variety but the ability to pick up and play. That PS2 had casual gamer appeal because it just had all the games and plenty of them were simple games.XBLA games are casual, the VC games on the wii are casual and the PSN downloads are casual games. So there's nothing about the PS3 that makes it any worse for casual gaming than the 36*.
what about ratchet and clank?
what about ratchet and clank?
Right now I think they have the harcore for sure. The question is if they can get that market the Wii has on the casual and split it down the line.
I find it really amusing that these guys label the ps3 not-for-casual gamers without even mentioning the most hyped 360 games are ALWAYS FPSs.So i guess they find shooting aliens in the head casual. The playstation brand has always been for both the hardcore AND casual gamer because of the variety it offers. And as far as i can see that hasn't changed with the ps3.
psn id: gingo.. i dont mind if ps3 is not for casual gamers because i would rather the "hardcore" games came out for ps3 and more casual games on psn
Did this guy carry out a survey before saying this?
I Think he is baised, For you xbots out there that means one saying somthings like "Halo is better than Haze" yet never played haze, but played halo, so would never know if halo really is better!
Fact of the Day :-D
DID YOU KNOW... did you know all the xbox fans out there listened to all the famus people out there that M$ payed off to say Xbox is better and fell for it! LOL. Now you know that all the xbots are foolish!
You gives a F*** about casual gamers, there not there to buy games, the Wii is proof of that. Look at the DS, Zelda sales will be no where near to the sales of Brain Training as the Nintendo fans that own a DS are a small crowd.
If I was asked which console was most hardcore I would say 360. Wii being the most casual for people who only played Wii sports for 1 week and the PS3 for both Hardcore, casual (look at the library) and also for movie watchers.
