Japanese sales charts are in, and in the week leading up to Christmas Eve, the PlayStation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 again, this time 7:1. This should come as no big surprise, as the PS3 outsells the Xbox 360 every week in Japan. Another statistic worth looking at is that the PSP sold a whopping 170,000 units.
Here are the official numbers:
- Nintendo DS Lite - 279,551
- Wii - 232,907
- PSP - 171,804
- PlayStation 3 - 58,167
- PlayStation 2 - 20,391
- Xbox 360 - 7,908
The main drive in DS sales derives from the release of the Mario Party which sold nearly 330,000 copies and Final Fantasy IV selling almost 300,000. The Nintendo Wii placed high on the charts with game releases such as Wii Fit and Mario Galaxy. With these charts not counting Christmas Eve and after Christmas sales, it will be interesting to see what next week's charts bring. Stay tuned for more information.

well, of course the ps3 will do alot better in japan. because it's probably cheaper over there isn't it? besides they probably think that the 360 is old technology.

When you think about it the 360 only does really well in the US, but in other places its ummm.... not that well, I mean really 7:1 but here in the US, MS brags about a 2:1 ratio, but that's just the US plus with all the games we're getting 08, it will just further the sales and increase the ratios in sales.

So funny microsoft was bragging even before we got the results a few weeks ago about US sales and saying the 360 is selling more than a 2:1, when it was close yes, but have i heard sony brag about this before or after we see this 7:1 in japan? Nope.

Justin, I don't get these comparisons. Sure, you're correct, but Wii is outselling PS3 by more than 4:1 ...unfortunate but its like...duh...of course...this is Japan.

well, during the big time shopping time, PS3 only sold 50,000. Thats really not that many. 360 will never do good in Japan. Last i checked, the area where there is the biggest 360 vs. PS3 battle is occuring is the US. And last time i checked, the US is quite a bit larger than Japan. Nintendo owns Japan. Nintendo and Microsoft own America. Sony is just kinda scattered because of lackluster games. This whole 7:1 ratio thing is so stupid. Anything to further the disbelief into belief in your ingorant narrow minds.

Uh... DUH!!! This is not news! The PS3 usually outsells the 360, as does the PS2. So what's the story?!! Japan hates most american electronic products. I'm thankful that the 360 outsells the Playstation in North America! Now why don't we report the REAL news... "The Wii outsells the Playstation AGAIN... nearly 4:1"

Why are people suprised that the PS2 is outselling the 360 in Japan? this has been happening like all year long, and probably longer, I dunno. What's good is that the PS3 is starting to sell more then the PS2 in Japan. We're finally starting to see some transition from the PS2 to the PS3 as the #1 playstation hardware :) (now just tag about 6 years on the PS3 and it can take PS2's spot as #1 console of all time,)

This is not surprising, ps3 will always outsell 360 in japan, I think the Wii is looked upon as a 'handheld-game' like the NDS, it is really cheap and i mean everyone loves to have fun and easy going games, and these can be found on the wii.I think that is why the wii sells well and if they keep releasing good ames like Mario Galaxy, then Sony and MS will have a hard time catching up.And not forgetting the fact that the wii is for all classes of gamers, so they merit their position, infact it looks like they have no competitors at all.Well well hope sony catches up in 2008 with a good number of killer apps coming to the ps3.

omg stop compairing the wii with next gen sales, the wii isn`t next gen at all its can`t handle half the games the ps3 n 360 has got,the wii is very cheap thats why its sells but its no way near a next gen console,oh n europe is the biggest economy in the world by far much bigger then america n thats where ps3 sales matter n its beating or matching the 360 already.

It's not so much that japan hates american products as it is that they just realize something that Americans refuse to see about M$. They see them as an intruder that really isnt bringing anything worth having into the industry. Sure M$ gave the world Live, but at the same time they ask you to pay for it and no one wants to but they do it limited numbers because they hope it improves things but it dosent when you can get the same thing on PC for free... of course then M$ made the Games for Windows brand which forces Live into the last truely free gaming situation, I guarantee they'll try go force you to play for live to play PCs online eventually.
Anywa I've said it multiple times before and I'll say it again.
No Modern Game System Has Ever "WON" A Console War Without The Support Of Japan. It dosent matter if it's an American system or a japnese one, you just cant officially win unless you win in japan first.

I though PS3 was suppose to be out selling Wii by now - Jeze 233,000 vs 58,000 in favour of Wii is atrocious.
Clearly the majority of PS2 users who are upgrading their consoles are selecting Wii over PS3 and I blame lack of games and the stupid decision to kill backward compatibility for the utter defeat of PS3 over Christmas this year.
Sales for Christmas was critical and I mean absolutely critical for PS3 going into the new year. Developers would have been watching this end of year sales figures carefuly for the lead as to where they will place their bets for the coming 18 months... and this Christmas a little itty bitty toy called a Wii kicked our asses ....again!
@Alpha2 - I completely agree with you. I'll never buy an Xbox 360 because I'll never agree to paying for a subscription service. Microsoft Live is a threat to gaming and its one we can easily defeat by not buying an Xbox 360. The only thing that scares me is the threat of stuffing up the PC platform - but the community behind the PC are highly skilled and can wield all sorts of dark arts in defending its freedom - Long live the hackers!
As for the sales figures for portable consoles - these figures dont look to good either. PSP got a spike in September selling almost 280,000 units - this trend was short lived and the PSP sales numbers go back into decline. More telling is the software release schedule for PSP with good support from Sony in 2008 with God of War Chains of Olympus and Secret Agent Clank but third party developers have started to bail out of PSP altogether and flock to DS which has already surpassed PS2 numbers in Japan and look set to do the same world wide during 2008.

I think comparing Wii sales to PS3 sales is stupid. PS3 and 360 are the same type of gaming experience and are both technically madia platforms, so its understandable to compare these 2 together. The Wii however is not anything like the PS3 and/or 360, the only similarities is that all 3 play games but the Wii is completely different gaming console with inferior technology that offers next to nothing in multimedia features.
Sales of the PS3 are good and will only improve over time with more software, price cuts and the transition from PS2 to PS3, also with future owners wanting another console after their Wii's and wanting a blu-ray player. At this time the software is not selling Wii consoles as it should be, the price is the main factor here. Price the Wii at £300/$500 and we would see barely any console move of the shelves as people wouldn't see any software for it that would make it worth it. So at that price with that technology without any software is not value for money, pricing it at £180/$250 makes it more value for your money. $600 then, now $500 without software for a PS3 is not value for money if you do not plan on watching too many blu-ray movies. It is value for money if you want the PS3 as a blu-ray player, very good value if you want blu-ray movies and the software is there. And IMO the software is there now with a huge year in 2008 for PS3. PS3's software in 2008 is way bigger than the 360 and easily the Wii. So if it is software in 2008 thats sells the conslose then it will be PS3 leading the sales. But then again the price point may push more Wii's than any other through 2008 but if people are choosing a console down to price then they will get what they pay for, meaning they will get fed up with the wii-mote and its quirky games and find there is nothing else to play as all the games are the same. Everyone will also find that the huge major titles and major sports franchises that were the biggest for gamers in the last-gen, will not be on the PS3 and 360. Yes there will be on Wii in some form but they are way inferior in visuals and the technical aspect, the things that people want in these type of games.

This isn't "news". It's not something new, it's something that's been going on for over 52 weeks! Japan has never been a fan of MSXboxes, and probably never will be!

Wii always has and maybe always will outsell PS3 and 3fixme because of its price and the price of its software. If the PS3 launched at $250USD then there would 20 million PS3's sold by now. Price has always dictated sales. Thats why the day after Thanksgiving is the biggest shopping day of the year. As much as love playstation, i knew there was a zero chance of it outselling Wii for any length of time. Now about this generation already being over. Last generation we saw 165 million combined PS2/Gamecube/Xbox system sales. So far in this gen between the big 3 we are around 30-40 million systems sold. Therefore this war is FAR from over, but you all already know that LoL.

Wii absolutely competes with PS3. They are both consoles competing for consumer $ and developer investment.
Imagine your the CEO of a software company and you have a development team of twenty people ready to take on a new project. If you develop for PS3 your user base is the smallest, it has a low software sell through rate and it's going to take your dev team 18 months to get a title onto the shelves and paying its way (IE: it will cost you a lot of money). Now compare that with Wii which has the greatest user base, plus a higher software sell through rate and it will only take you team 9 months to get a product onto the shelves making money... Which one will you choose? The point is that you cant do both so a choice of one is a loss for the other. Publishers like Namco where in this position four months ago and made the call to cancell support for PS3 with Monster Hunter and instead move the franchise to Wii. Sony will not earn any royalties or dev fee's from Monster Hunter as a result. - Wii competes with PS3 for developer investment as does DS competes agains PSP.
On the flip side, consumers who own a PS2 and purchase software from their local store create revenue for the publisher & Sony. Those very users who run out and buy a Wii will now have to decide whether to buy a PS2 game or a new game for their new Wii system. Comparing Wii graphics and capabilities to PS2 and you can clearly see it is atleast 400% better. Its next gen compared to last gen PS2....
My feeling is that half of the Wii owners are former PS2 users who decided to postpone an upgrade to PS3. Having discovered that Sony has killed off backward compatibility, some of the owners have probably decided to stay with Wii and will never upgrade to PS3 - Wii is taking business from both PS2 and PS3. A $100 spent on Wii products & services is a $100 the customer no longer has to spend on Playstation... They directly compete for consumer spend.
As it stands now, Xbox 360 has more than double the user base of PS3 and more importantly five times greater software sell through. With a reasurgent PC market with the best games available - there really isnt much room left at the top end of the market. Sony cant afford Wii stealing the entire entry & mid markets from under their feet.
I think the price adjustment has helped but they will need to go further early in the new year (around March). In addition, they need to put back full compatibility with PS2 and encourage their former customers to upgrade to PS3. Sony cannot afford mass defection because the Sony business model only works - it is only profitable - when Sony market share dominates... Coming last isnt an option.
Bottom line we need to see those figures reversed quickly. PS3 selling 300,000 units each month and Wii down to 50,000 units per month...

The other issue with PS3 is Sonys STUPID idea of only selling the one SKU in PAL regions which doesn´t have BC OR card readers. PAL regions only have some "PS3 lite" version right now, and until they launch a proper PS3 with the same bells and whistles as other regions, I for one won´t be buying one! Why spend my hard earned cash on some crippled PS3? I think I´ll pickup a Wii in the mean time...if I can find one. PAL regions are the only ones where PS3 actually outsell the 360- nice way to treat your best customers Sony! 1st it´s the last region to launch...by months, and now we only get "PS3 lite" to boot! If card reader was reintroduced I may change my mind, but what´s the point of ommiting it, they only cost around $2 per unit anyway?

What really annoys me is not so much the lack of good games, but the absolute BS we where offered by Sony in June this year when that idiot Kaz Hirai got up on stage, raised his hand and promissed us - he PROMISSED us 380 new Playstation 3 titles by March 2008 and that all 380 new titles would be available in Japan, Europe & the US by March.... Ummm ....He lied......Again.
The point is - I can put up with endless delays on "Home", the constant delays on games, the fact that most games are no longer exclusives and that they dont play better on PS3 (infact they are frequently worst), I dont even care if a game or two or three or ten get cancelled on my PS3 platform - but what I do really really hate is to be Bull s h itted to... I'd rather be able to understand the situation upfront and trust when Sony promisses something it will com true.
Personally I can wait as I'm happy playing some of the PS2 titles that are available like God of War 2, Odin Sphere, Grim Grimore, FF XII, Okami but it also pi ss es me off that I cant even play my games on my PS3. That is really F uck ed up. But this is something that Sony can still fix if they pull their act together.

March is still 3 months away so lets not jump the gun and call anyone a liar yet. If anything just call him an idiot for a promise that shouldn't have been made. They games have been coming (UDF, AC, UT3, COD4) and they still are (DMC4, GT5P, wipeoutHD, haze, echochrome). The man was insane to promise 380 games in a 9 month window, and i'm sorry but anyone who believed it is just as, if not more insane. If you need BC that badly then do what I did and trade your 80GB SKU with a friend for their 60GB. He wanted the extra gigs and I wanted the BC which he didn't care about so it was a fair exchange.

@tom ass
Agreed. It was a crazy promise - but since he currently represents Sony and is in charge of the Sony Computer Entertainment division, Sony's should put a leash around his neck and a gag in his mouth until Kaz can learn not to lie all the time and not to build a business on hype alone. He needs to learn to deliver.
As for the 60GB model with full BC... Mate I'd love to buy one but they never released it in the PAL regions so I can't get one without importing it.
All the best models are in Japan but if I import "Home" will probably lock me out... Also I'll take a big hit selling my two PS3's because in Australia there is little demand on ebay for PS3 and the second hand stores already have some so Cash Converters at Bondi Junction have only offering me AU$300 for a PS3 (US$263) for a new one still sealed in the box and around $100 less if its second hand. The weired thing is they offer $300 for a Wii so Im getting ripped off... I'll probably still sell them and import but I know I'll get stuffed up later down the track by region locking
Guys as we can see with the shrinking unit sales for PS2, that the console is in its last year as far as meaningful sales are concerned. For this reason it is very important for Sony to capture the base of PS2 users who are upgrading. Right now Wii is capturing around 30 - 40% of those upgrades so its not a good sign. Backward compatibility plus tie-ins to PS2 games is critical for Sony to attract those users. I hope Sony fix this problem ASAP in the new year.
