PS3 price cut coming this fall, says report

Sources close to website Ars Technica have claimed that Sony is to lower the price of the PlayStation 3 this fall.
The site predicts that the high-end 160GB SKU will replace the 80GB model once the latter’s current stock has been depleted. Following this, it is believed the platform holder will slash the price of the system and introduce the long rumored Slim PS3 around the same time.
No details were given in regards to how much Sony is looking to cut the machine’s price, though we’ll be sure to keep you updated. Keep in mind that an official price cut has yet to be confirmed, so take this with a pinch of salt until we hear otherwise.
Stay tuned.

i hope their isnt a price cut personally... i paid the full amount for myu 60gb when released and tbh all a price qould do is increase the amount of kids playing online that are soo annoying playing music thru their mics and screaming.... i hate on cod how they become unmuted at end of eachr round!

Why would we care? If youre in this forum, most likely we all have ps3s already! Besides, Why cant people see the ps3 is worth the money. BLU_RAY drive?!? BIGGER HARD DRIVE compared to s**tbox!!! NO 3RL and more stable hardware!!! Bigger game franchises!!! Network ready!!!
What irritates me is they keep comparing the XBOX360 ARCADE with the PS3. Whats up with that??? PS# is an ALL-IN-ONE machine, thus "Black Behemoth" and c'mon, you gotta agree, looking and holding the PS3 just gives you that higher quality and higher end feel to it...

Why do people keep coming up with this stuff? We all know a price cut will happen and yeah it could happen in a week off sony announcing it. Probably with so many articles stating PS3 price cut soon people will stop buying PS3 till there is one which does hurt sonys hardware sales a little
Pretty much why price cuts always happen fast once announced so it doesnt stop sales dipping
But we do still know sony loses money per ps3 sold, I wouldnt mind Sony giving america a pricecut a bit sooner for the slugish sales but a small one could turn off some buyers thinking another one might be too far off
If anything pricecut before everyone starts shopping for christmas, for higher demand.

PSU, I'm starting to get angry with you. I really think you should stop posting price cut predictions. IMO, the next price cut story you post should be:
"Sony officially cuts price of the PS3, details..."
The Yahoo article this weekend was ridiculous. I'm begging you to not be like them because I like your site and come here several times a day. I will stop, however, if you continue to stoop to being as irresponsible as everyone else. Sorry if this is offensive.

UGH!
This is getting annoying seeing "PS3 price cut coming xxx says xxx". There's been SO many of those and none have been correct.
@10: I always try to be the first poster so that I can keep other's from saying "FIRSTTT1!!!!1111!!!!!!!!!1111" like it even means anything. I agree that they should get banned for doing so. Sort of like Gizmodo will ban you for posting "1st" or other annoying things.

it won't be enough in the UK tbh. its still retailling at around £250-£300, it really needs to be at £180 or so by now. Its been at that price for around a year and a half now.
its simple demand and supply, and much like Sony's other hardware they are keeping the prices artificially high in order to offset some of the financial pain in this climate. I personally think they've got that approach wrong over here in the UK.

It is kind of funny at this point. Analysts keep saying that and get proven wrong. Now eventually Sony will drop the price so at some point one of them will be right... but only in the sense that they happened to guess at the right time.
So at this point why even mention these things. Nobody will believe it until they actually do.

This is exactly why sales continue to fall. Dumb people posting this like "Price Cuts"
If I didn't own two 60GB PS3s and I had to get the crap they are producing now, I would wait for the 160GB slim model.

I stated this last year when Xbox did their price cut. The price of the PS3 will be cut for the console 3rd Year.
Guess what folks. This fall, the PS3 turns 3.

I swear... Don't people use their brains! If there was really a ps3 slim coming out this fall don't you think that sony would have anounced it along side the psp go at E3 since it is releasing this fall. Why would sony release a slim model of the ps3 so soon and withough the ability to upgrade the hardrive. Get real, this article is no were near lagit.

I predict there will be a price drop for the PS3 on November 5th 2009.
Notice what I did there: I managed to do exactly the same as these analysts, and it took me no effort whatsoever. Every single person in this room can do the same. These rumours are pointless, because they take no skill to devise, they are guesses, educated at best. Every single person that reads these rumours can do exactly the same, and I don't believe anyone here is an analyst. Analysts make these so called "predictions" with whatever information they have obtained, but they're still highly unlikely to be true. No matter what facts/figures/statistics they throw together, they're still guesses, and the fact that the majority are false makes every one irrelevant. Therefore, everyone reading this article may as well look at Sony's figures, put 2 and 2 together and start making pointless estimates for when the PS3 will drop in price. They'll be just as accurate as the "professionals''' predictions, and will be just as likely to come true. So why aren't you posting our predictions in articles, PSU? Are you gonna start updating every day with "PS3 price cut coming this month/season/year/decade, says PSU user" until one of us finally gets it right? From what you're claiming, PSU, every single person can be an analyst. The majority of predictions may seem likely, but they rarely come true, if at all, and take little to no skill. It's not too different from looking up to the sky, seeing a dark cloud, and saying "Hmm, it might rain.". I hate the idea of you constantly sabotaging your own site with articles like this. From now on, every time you post a price cut prediciton, I shall post a weather forecast for how I predict the climate in my area appears to be turning out. It's just as pointless and boring: Sounds fair, right?
"Currently, the weather is sunny with barely any visible clouds in the sky. I predict there is only 5% chance of rain today."

yeah we got it and stop posting the bleeding obvious, we know that a price cut will happen, we dont need some over paid analyst to tell us. Its a consumer electrical good, which by there very nature ALWAYS drop in price eventually................Now move on and dont mention it untill you have FACTS.

it seems unlikely to me that sony would push out a slim ps3 and the psp go at the same time. i mean its possible but it just seems unlikely to me.
and im really quite tierd of all these predictions of price drops. remember how sure everyone was that the price would drop in april? then that passed and everyone said, oh deffenitly E3, now E3 has passed and everyones saying, oh deffenitly this fall! give it up already! geez.

Hey PSU I got a suggestion for you.... How about you STOP printing these articles cause they are pointless...
Also how about waiting till SONY does announce it officially then you will actually have something to report instead of just rumors and speculations....
Just an idea though...

Ok... so dropping the 80 gig and dropping teh price of the 160 gig... does NOT solve the price problem. It's still 400 dollars... There's still a 200 dollar competitor, even if it doesn't have a harddrive... Yeah, they'll annihilate the Elite, but the Elite is hardly their biggest concern, now is it?
If they DON'T drop the 80 gig, but instead drop the price 50 or 100 dollars, that will be a much better strategy.

I assume we all want the price to drop so Sony will sell more PS3s? I mean, that seems to be why most of these sites keep clamoring for Sony to drop the price. It seems counterproductive to then post stories about a price-cut coming almost 4 months from now. That would result in a freeze on sales because consumers will wait for the price to drop. As is, I know four people that are not buying a PS3 now because they're sure the price will drop soon since every site has a story about this almost once a week. If it happens it happens but until then I think we've all had enough of these rumor articles.

Ok, to answer a few question. The first one that most people post "Why do I care, I already have one?" You care because the current PS3 sales world wide are not very good. They are currently third place in a three console race, and that isn't good. In North America the story is pretty bad. However if you include the DS and PSP then the PS3 is 5th and almost loosing to the PS2. 3rd party developers are looking hard at not supporting the PS3 and that isn't good. Crappy ports are one thing, but no ports is another.
"Can we stop posting on stuff that isn't going to happen?" It is going to happen, we just don't know when. Most believe that it will happen this year in the NA and for Sony's sake they better do it BEFORE Thanksgiving. Like a few weeks before Thanksgiving at the latest. Summer sales have always sucked so they have time to dry out the channel and get their mfg cost down.
Now the other statements... "I wish Sony would just focus on games..." They can and should do both. They need to do EVERYTHING to get the console down to below $300 ASAP, while keeping the quaility of the system high. I realize that Sony doesn't need to sell as many consoles as say the Wii or 360 to be defined a success, but they do need to sell enough to force companies to spend the development effort to port and produce software for it. They also must (and are) work on great exclusives that show a reason to buy a PS3. I personally don't believe that there will be "ONE" game that will be made that will be THE GAME that people rush out and buy a $400-$500 console for, but there will be a bunch of exclusives that help justify that purchase. At $300 though, there might be that "ONE GAME" that does it.
lastly, I would imagine that we would start to see shortages of certain PS3's a month or two before a price drop and that hasn't happened so it is at least a couple of months away.
