PS3 sales growth on par with Xbox 360

Many PlayStation 3 supporters can tell you straight up that while initially seeing a slower than usual start, the PS3 is still on the rise to becoming the dominant gaming platform.
On the other end of the spectrum, cheers remain strong in support for the Xbox 360 as it is outselling Sony’s console by a significant margin. No matter how your opinions sway, what is not commonly known, however, is that the Xbox 360 had a similar start to that of the PS3s.
In a recent chart study conducted by VG Charts, one of the most comprehensive videogame charts in the world, it shows that while the Xbox 360 may have a substantial lead over the PS3 (also note the PS3 came out a full year after the 360), the 360 faced a very similar path that the PS3 is trailing on right now in terms of sales growth.

As you may see, the PS3 is aligned almost identically with the Xbox 360. So in conclusion, the PS3, nearly 52 weeks into its life cycle is on par with what the Xbox 360 had during a similar time frame.
So what does this mean? It means that the PlayStation 3 isn’t fairing horribly as many people would say it would be.
With titles such as Metal Gear Solid 4 and the Final Fantasy XIII games coming in the near future, as well as the recent price cut, there is no reason why the PS3 cannot dust the Xbox 360 in the coming 2 years and eventually take on the Nintendo Wii.

Makes sense. The Xbox 360 had a pretty bad first year, as the PS3 has had the same. Now that the killer games are coming out, we'll se a big difference soon

All these stats can be tweeked to say whatever they want them too, if they just get out more GREAT games and develop more tools for 3rd party developers then we will see the PS brand back on top, but currently the 3rd party devs are killing the PS3-- "EA" enough said, all the 3rd party delays, piss poor ports and now this whole online deal with Area 51. If the PS3 is better then start showing its better with 3rd party extras.

Unless the 360 gets a HD-DVD drive built in to it, so games can take advangae of the extra space that is needed for true next-gen games then the 360 will definatly fall flat on its face within the next couple of years.

PS3 sales will sky-rocket next year when MGS4, GT5, FF13 & when Killzone 2 are released. I don't think PS3 is in a bad position right now considering the games that are out for the system.

Most of the real important titles are coming out either cross-platform or exclusively on PS3. The only really big game Xbox 360 has had exclusively is Halo 3... Now with all the new exciting games coming out next year, many will be for the PS3 and I definitely think this marks the PS3 as the best platform (I agree with Activision :-))

i love the playstation i really do, BUT the sales are catastrofic if you think about the last-gen war. if only 30% of all ps2 owners would have progressed to ps3 it would outsell the xbox360 3-1 .. aint that a failture?
or if 10% that owns a ps2 buys a ps3 it would stay even with the 360..
to bad ps3 got off to a really bad start .. hope the tide will turn
sry for the spelling - im swedish

Also, lets not forget that when the 360 came out it had no competition. It was suppose to be the only "next generation" console out. Alot of folks jumped on it, so they could be one of the first. The ps3 is going against both 360 and wii. So, in this respect, I think the ps3 is in better shape than the 360 was in it's first year. Truly, the ps3 is the only real next generation console out (nothing against the 360 camp. It's just a matter of time before the ps3 takes first place, just my opinion.

Well.... If you notice, the holiday season for the 360 had a nice boost, Sony will need an even bigger in order to make people look at it more.

I guarentee the PS3 will never pass the 360 in sales. Next year is supposed to be the big year for sony with MGS4. Well if it stays exclusive (which it probably wont) than Gears of War 2 will over power it. The only thing keeping me from selling my PS3 now is Socom Confrontation. I hope i am wrong since i am a proud owner or a PS3, but its not looking good in the future. And about the whole blu-ray and hd-dvd thing, whatever... i want games. If i wanted a blu-ray player i wud buy one for $300 off ebay. I want games...

Mr.Iownboth you must be on cr8ck.... plz dont post unless your sober.
PS3 will surpass 360 in sales definetly within 2 years. Right now the wii is stealing sales a tad, but after next year the wii going to hit their climax and start falling the ps3 is a system that will last way longer than the wii and 360 together due to its advance technology and versitility. Also the line up next year is so crazy Id pull my hair out if it was long enough to pull. People comlain now but this chart shows that ps3 is not really doing bad compared to what 360 is doing and to me it did way better than 360 considering how the ps3 was more expensive and had more competition when it released. But like i was saying I give it at most 2 years before the ps3 starts crushing the 360.
PS DONT F8KN EVER SAY MGS COMING TO 360 F8KN SPIT IN THE FACE WHEN PPL SAY THAT-- 360 isnt f8kn strong enough to even handle the game its exclusive and will always remain exclusive so u 360 fan boys with high hopes get out of the clouds.

Dust the 360? sure. Not a problem since no one really "likes" micro$haft to beginwith. Nintendo on the other hand sold a 250 dollar system to people who dont play video games, While video gaming is a huge market the number of people who DONT play video games is a high one. on the other hand all those people are hardly buying games for it because they arnt gamers.

That looks like it's off VGcharts, which is "teh failz" as was so eloquently put in the forums. But even so, the real figures should be similiar. PS3 ftw, anyone w/ half a brain would have seen that coming

in my mind the ps3 had a tougher launch, because it was up against the 360 and wii, so thats why its slow, and all the 360's second year titles are getting compared to ps3 1st year titles. If you look at the 1st year life spans of the consoles. the ps3 has better rated games. Gears of war 9.4 ---- Ratchet and clank 9.4 so... i would compare halo 3 and bioshock to killzone 2 and mgs4, now you tell me who will win that. hahah no chance for 360.

But publishers see it a different way. They just look at the user base and see PS3 at 5 million and look at XBox 360 at 12 million and say - I'd rather sell to 12 million people - dont spend too much time on PS3 until its at least the same as Xbox 360.
Because there are no games no one is rushing out to buy PS3 (at any price) so we end up with this ever perpetuating problem.
Publishers can easily port across Xbox 360 & PC giving them a market larger than even the PS2 and with microsoft promissing better anti piracy measures on PC with Vista and support for PC & Xbox360 online services....publishers like EA are beginning to talk "single platform". Microsoft are starting to build a convincing story and games like Crysis, Call of Duty 4, UT3, Bioshock, DMC 4, Assasins Creed GOW (now on PC) and the success of Steam are supporting Microsofts argument.
The exception is Wii which with its amazing growth just cant be ignored. Publishers are happy supporting the Wii / DS combo in its own right as its big enough.
The only way out for Sony is to leverage their massive PS2 user base. This should be a no-brainer but for some crazy reason Sony management have refused to build a clear upgrade path for PS2 users to migrate to the new PS3 platform. It is like they are intentionaly sabotaging their own business. I honestly give up on Sony and think they are digging their own grave and will at some point (real soon) have to lay down in it.
So what is Sony's solution - all they do is talk about PS3 as a media center and say Bluray blah blah blah... They have no frikken idea. Wake up Sony - Just put back BC, turn out some good games that cross the PS2 & PS3 platforms and offer insentives for PS2 users to upgrade. Pretty simple really. Once your on top THEN and only then you can talk your Bluray blah blah blah.

The PS3 is in the same growth as 360, when 360 had no competition at the time? I'd say that's damn good considering how well the Wii is selling right now.
But honestly, how many pre-established franchises are out now for the PS3? None that I can think of. I can only see hope going into Spring 08 with all the beautiful exclusives coming our way to lend us a hand.

Though who would've thought that the mighty Nintendo is (right now) the one get on top faster than anything console ever brought out there!?! I mean, before any of these 3 came out, everyone was predicting that the Wii would be @ the bottom of the race and something people wouldn't really take into! Nintendo must be enjoying this, even though Nintendo took a great risk...they are succeeding! But Sony too has taken great risks, using a Blu-ray drive and giving it a very expensive price (compared to the other 2)....their product will succeed in due time. Just like the 2 previous Playstation.
