PS3 to beat PS2's lifetime sales, says Sony Europe boss

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) David Reeves has said that the company expects the PlayStation 3 to eventually surpass lifetime sales of its predecessor, the PlayStation 2.

While the console may have gotten off to bumpy start, Reeves was keen to observe the current state in which the next-generation machine’s install base is at, commenting, "The PS3 install base is growing faster that the PS2's was at this point in its lifecycle."

"The next five years are going to be turbulent. But I think it is going to be the most exciting period that we have ever seen in the past ten years of video games," said Reeves.

Although Nintendo’s Wii is currently outselling the PS3, Reeves remained optimistic, adding, "We welcome all competition. Whatever happens, we are all going to do well. We should celebrate the growth of the industry.”

    I'm celebrating the growth of the industry, all right.  It almost feels like a playstation.  I got my MGS4, and Gran Turismo.  Now I need my Final Fantasy and SOCOM.  Done.

    The only GOW I've played is the one on PSP.  I stopped with the PS2 by the time GOW was big.

    Sounds good, but also a little dubious. I am the only person i know who has a ps3.

    Yet i know countless with ps2, maybe it is a timing thing.

    I think MGS4 has to have helped enlarge the ps3 install base, such an amazingly good game.

    I am also the only one i know who has a ps3. And actually MGS4 didn't really push any unit's. Sony is saying this only reason is cause of blu ray not cause of a game system. I don't think PS3 has broke 3 mill here in the state's.

    @ alkin2me atually mgs did help push the playstation forward in sales. according to vgchartz.com the ps3 beat the wii in hardware sales and it's currently is in second place, it;'s behind the nintendo DS. and if you look at the game sales mgs is the top seller. oh yea, this site actually asks places that sell games how much they sold insted of asking how much shipped so these statistics are legit.

    lol you clearly have no idea what you're talking about. At all. Maybe you would do a little research before you posted your senseless ****.

    On topic: It really is finally starting to feel like Playstation again. And with the awesome new IP's coming out, we're also seeing the Playstation brand grow and expand.

    @ Utalkin2me: Did you happen to notice the sales of the MGS4 80GB PS3 bundle?  It certainly seems to me that the PS3 was selling like hot cakes last week.

    ---

    Most of the major sequels are out by now on the PS3.  By March 09 (pending delays), all the major titles will be out and you will have no reason to not have a PS3.

    this is true i think this is probably one of the most exciting generations in gaming and thats amazing that the ps3's adopt rate is faster than ps2s that right there is a major indicator of success alls they have to do is keep the momentum and with the awesome games and features coming all the way into 2009 it doesnt look like its gonna stop

    I used to be the only one I knew who owned a PS3. Now there's about 10 people in my closest circle of friends who's gotten their own PS3. My brother even got the MGS bundle. Actually I now know more people with a PS3 than an XBOX.

    Just waiting for Killzone 2, Resistance 2, LBP, Home and Motorstorm 2. I just can't imagine how large the install base will be by this time next year.

    Then... so is the 360. What I wanna know is how is the PS3 gonna catch up to the 360 if it keeps only selling 20k more units a month? That will take forever. Unless they are priced under the 360, I really don't see the PS3 passing the 360, unless MS releases another console and dumps the 360.

    Its more of how the industry has changed in both showing what gameplay is all about and pushing the boundaries in terms of technology and innovations in game mechanics.

    After purchasing a wii as well as an xbox , now owning all 3 systems , I can honestly say that the ps3 is by far the superior system. the games look and play better. period. after a while other system owners are seriously going to notice. In 2 years we will see a larger install base for the ps3 than xbox worldwide and u.s.

    viva la ps3!

    @23

    The PS2 has sold more than 110 MILLION units.  Saying that it will pass the PS2 is the same thing as saying it will surpass the 360.  The 360 isn't going to sell 110 Million units.  I think the 360 will top out at about 32 million units.  That's 9 million more than the Xbox 1's 23 million.

    @Stickemup,

    You should not only consider the States, but the entire world. The PS3 has been outselling the 360 in Europe and Australia since the year began, well beyond that for Australia actually. It has been consistently outselling the 360 in Japan for some time now, at a rate of about 5-1(sometimes reaching 6-1.

    It sold 75,000 units in Japan in four days with the Metal Gear Bundle, in comparison to the 360 only selling a little over 2,000 units in Japan for that entire week. The 360's last saving graces are the U.S. and the fact that people are still  having to come back and purchase new systems because of the Red Ring and not wanting to wait to get it fixed. In some cases, in speaking with customers(I work retail), they are on their 2nd and 3rd systems.

    Please do not underestimate the number of people who were literally waiting until Metal Gear came out to get the PS3. My store recieved almost 3 dozen 80 gigs on the 12th and they were gone within 3 hours. Even the 40GBs are coming off the shelve at a faster rate now. Things look good for the summer now. GTA is already out, for those who didn't get it on their 360, Metal Gear just came out, Soul Calibur comes out the end of July, and there are alot of people looking forward to playing as Vader.
