Speaking ahead of NPD Group figures for March, Wedbush Morgan analyst has said that the PlayStation 3 outsold Microsoft’s Xbox 360 for the third consecutive month in North America.

Speaking in a note to investors today, Pachter forecast PS3 sales at 365,000 units, edging out the Xbox 360 at 310,000 units during the same period.

Nintendo Wii is predicted to outsell both machines combined at roughly 700,000 units.

Elsewhere, Pachter also forecast US software sales to rise by 47 per cent, reaching USD 850 million. Among the likely top sellers include Army of Two, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Major League Baseball 2K8 and catalog titles such as Wii Play, Guitar Hero III and Rock Band.

NPD figures are expected to release this Thursday.

Stay tuned.

    Wow what a suprise! Good news granted but come on, the 360 has been out for almost 2 extra years. Most people already have one.

    Wonderfull, still the margin is not big enough!

    I just want to see the look on MS face when sony will prove them that they are the best again.

    I dont know what people find in WII, My Gf bought one and I gave up on it after a day! Childish games and graphics, besides the nunchuck wire is a pain in the ass

    This sort of news has come up so many times its boring now when ps3 outsells by at least 100,000 post an article not every time someone thinks it will do this or that

    What else is new? I pretty much expected the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360 in March and I think that the PS3 will outsell the Xbox 360 every month in the U.S. for the majority of this year. With all of the news of the MGS4 bundles, and other PS3 exclusives, it's easy to see why the PS3 has outsold the 360 every month of this year in the U.S.

    And the Wii doesn't even matter in the 7th gen console race, it's in the left field somewhere out in the woods having a competition with itself. Once these "Wii shortages" end ( if they ever end) I wonder how well the Wii will fare then. I find it surprising how many Wii's are sold each month in the U.S. despite the fact that they are so hard to find. If the Wii was the same price as the PS3, the PS3 would be outselling it no doubt.

    But what I'm really excited about is April because of GTA4 coming out. I wouldn't be surprised if 500,000+ PS3's were sold just in the month of April in the U.S. alone.

    Also, the margin that the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 by isn't that much, but it doesn't matter because the PS3 still outsold the 360 on the Xbox 360's Home Turf and I think that PS3 and 360 sales will pretty much be neck-and-neck in the U.S. until Sony rolls out some of it's heavy hitter game titles. Once Sony starts pulling out the big guns, I'm sure that the PS3 will start to outsell the 360 every month by at least 100,000 units in the U.S.

    What i can't believe is that you still have Wii shortages in the US.

    @jicaley - Most people already have one? Are you crazy? The 360 has sold like 15 million or something? You have any idea how many PS2 owners there are in North America? MOST of them haven't made the leap to the next generation. I seriously doubt the 360 will ever outsell the PS3 again.

    That would be great if it was true!

    If Micorsoft comes out tomorrow and says that "We have been experiencing shortages...", we will know they phail. Hehe

    @ jicaley,
    that doesn't matter, the PS2 has been out for how long now?  and look how much it's still selling.

    @jicaley

    "Most people already have one"?!  Who are you talking about?  The people on your street?  You realize that there are 300 million people in the U.S. alone, right?  And that the 360 hasn't even sold more than the original Xbox yet (23 million copies)?  The PS2 still sells and there hae been 120 million of those.  Think before you post.  It's probably more correct to say that "Everyone WHO WANTS A 360 has one by now."

    Anyway, I'm still chalking up all this up to Blu-Ray's win at the beginning of the year.  If you don't believe me, go over to Blu-Ray.com (with all the guys that only bought a PS3 for Blu-Ray) and click on the story that announced that DTS-MA comes with the next firmware update (2.30) and read how excited they are.  The cool thing about this PS3 sales thing is that ALL THE SALES THAT REFLECT POPULARITY OF UPCOMING GAMES still have yet to come.  I think that starts with GT:Prologue and doesn't stop until the holidays.

    @Emo-Merc

    It takes almost half a month to tally the N-Scan numbers from the month before.  It's supposed to be the most accurate, and everyone in the industry accepts it without question (which is amost always a bad idea no matter what you're talking about).  Anyway, that's why we are talking about March here in mid-April.

    lol at the 'most people already have a 360' excuse. Funny how the PlayStation 2's still keeping pace after all this time isn't it! :) Doesn't everybody have a PS2 already. ;)

    @jicaley - You may be right, most people that wanted a 360 already have one....and now they're realizing the error of their ways and buying the PS3.

    I'm not surprised about the sales, other than it took so long for the PS3 to pick up.  Personally I would never buy a 360 and I just bought my PS3 last month due to the fact that GTA IV, MGS4 and some other games are now getting close to the release dates.

    The trend continues, but for how long? Seriously besides April there really any other month that the 360 has a shot to surpass the PS3 in sales. Only reason that April may not be a PS3 month is because GTAIV is multiplat and I bet MS is gonna try everything to get the 360 logo on the commercials

    I doubt this will change this year.  Gears 2 won't have any effect because if you liked the first, chances are you already have a 360.

    This was a waste of a post. Like we didn't know that ps3 was going to out sell xbox. ppl started to look over the price and look at what the ps3 had to offer. To be real with you, you dont even need a game to enjoy your ps3!!!

    that's good but i just read that RROD has come to the PS3 in the form of a error message. that can't be good for sales. very disturbing news.

  26. MatrixSixaxis

    • 8:00am BST - April 15th, 2008

    @cybrdrac:  you probably read that from an Xbox site. The "error meassage" is to do with net connection, it's more to do with the software initially built into the PS3 (though a Firmware Update will eradicate that problem). The message only turns up when your connected online, and WILL still let you play games!  Ergo, you don't need to return your PS3 to Sony, unlike an X360!
