Sony now understands the importance of online gaming to the consumer. Online gaming drives the gamers’ experience beyond the core value of the game to higher goals, thus, creating replay-value. This is why Sony is creating an innovative Home system which will push industry standards for online interactivity. What Sony has not mastered yet is an “achievements system” similar to the one available for Xbox 360 users in which gamers are awarded points for task completed in a game online or offline. Sony’s Eric Lempel believes that they have the perfect ingredient to surpass Microsoft’s achievement system in every way.
"I recognise that there are a few features that PS3 users have asked for that we haven't delivered yet. We have a lot of features in different stages of development that I think our users will be very excited about,"
"I know that an achievement system is very important to our consumers. With Home, and in addition to Home, we have some very exciting programs planned to recognize our consumers' gaming skills and loyalty in new ways that go well beyond a single score.
Howard Stringer, Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe CEO explains, "2008 will be a big year in many ways for PlayStation Network."
Perhaps the Game Developers Conference next month in San Francisco will be a haven for new information regarding this and of course, PSU will have you fully covered.

sounds cool. but wait a minute, say they create acheivements for games that came out before home. like CoD 4, Resistance, etc. and you did something in that game that would be considered an acheivement, would you have to do it again? or would it just be automatically given to you? hmmm....

all in all achievments are a good thing for the replayability for casual and hardcore gamers a like, we need to understand that I know people here dont like the point system but some people do and you gotta remember people pay a lot for these games and parents want their money to last when buying kids games. If you dont care about the point system then what point to complain about it but tell me this.... If the point system was able to get free stuff off the PSN store would you care about it then???? AHH got ya thinking lol

Hey all. I think this can only be a good thing, if ya not bothered about em then its just there not harming ya and you wont care about ya points and carry on as normal. If you did then its there win win. I like the idea of awards to use on the store too other than just simple points but i dont think you should get that willy nilly. It should be high points landmarks and certain realy hard achievements.
I found on the 360 that i went on to complete games that i otherwise wouldnt but for the achievement points etc. Also the games lasted as i tried to cover everything in the achievement list to a degree.
Bring it on

Well I have to say this is exciting to think of the poss abilities though I don't know what these "programs" may be. All I can think of is Sony awarding players for achievements by giving us free downloads maybe or a certain percentage off of purchases in the PS Network Store and things like that. I guess we will see. This is one of the many reasons why I agree with you Keith. Competition is a good thing. Microsoft may be viewed as the evil Empire by many fan boys but I appreciate the many innovative things they have done with their next gen console especially in the online community. From the achievement points to the friends stuff its all very cool and entertaining. XBLArcade has also got the creative juices flowing. This article is why I like competition because it forces these companies to brainstorm and think of how they can not only do the same but do it better. Sony and Nintendo (Although Nintendo's focus isn't 100% into online stuff) have a chance to sit back and think of how they can incorporate these features into their strategy as well. I am glad Sony is being creative and not too copy cat. Now I just want to know when Home will be released so we can use all of this fun stuff.

@bedsidelee. Actually your a complete idiot.Because first of all your order list with the consoles is comletely off. Especially since most developers will start making the PS3 the lead sku over the 360. So just how does that make the 360 2nd and the ps3 in 3rd place?? What kinda math are you using??

@bedsidelee: At least we know you enjoy paying $50 a year for something that should be free. Too bad you never realized it. Your favorite company must like having payed $1B for their screw-ups because they wanted to rush it out. By the way, how are your Red Rings?

I'm just glad we're getting to see some achievements in games. The only one I can think of that had this through the game was GTA with all the jumps and everything. I don't like having to go online and find out what I missed in the game. I want to know right then what I got and what I need.

Sweetness. I'm waiting for the release of home to just open up a massive can off... gawdlyness! Wonder if they're holding onto ingame XMB, achivements and other great features to be packed into one massive update along with home... sigh, I would love that.
