PS3's full power won't manifest for years, says Hirai

According to Sony Computer Entertainment President Kazuo Hirai, the PlayStation 3 has not been pushed to its fullest capability yet.
In an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine, Hirai pointed out that it would take years until the PS3 reaches its maximum potential. "The power that we've packed into PS3 will really manifest itself in software titles that come up four, five or six years down the line", said Hirai.
Hirai later went on to remind people of past consoles from the company that have been scrutinized in their difficulty to develop for. "If you look back at the commentary we received when we launched PS2, there was a lot of talk to the effect that 'It's very difficult to program for' and 'It's easier on a Dreamcast'. It's happened before," he said.
"If they came back and told me, 'PS3? We can do this in a heartbeat,' that would be worrying because what it is telling me is that we're not pushing the envelope from a technology standpoint."
Indeed, Hirai’s comments echo that of a number of third party companies, who in recent months also highlighted the fact developers would need at least a few years to utilize the console to its full potential. This goes to show that the PS3 is a long-term machine and not something that will be out placed two-three years from now, backed up by Sony’s earlier claims that the machine will spend at least ten years on the market.

Alright, I'm glad Hirai can point out the obvious!!! When has a consoles ever been pushed less than a year from launch? [sarcasm]I'm glad the 360 is close to it's limit. Nice to know a console's limits so early.[/sarcasm] Seriously though, MS got a gopher up the rear when they decided not to use HD-DVD discs instead of DVD9s. We've pretty much hit the limit of the PS2 nearly 7 years after its launch. Maybe it's just the maker. I've got friends who've had their PS2 since launch and it still works. MS? You're lucky to get 6 months, let alone 7 years.

I am ahppy that i dont have to spend anymore money on hardware for now. Just bring out really greaat games more. Everything els is a given. Movies, web browsing etc great. I even can now transcode almost any video especially avi files to my PS3 so now i watch most movies on my hdtv. This is reallly a cool thing.

psn id: gingo.... i'm actually pretty scared by this comment if we can get visually stunning games now and next year like Lair, Killzone 2, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, Folklore, FF13 and the best of all GT5, then what will the games be like in 4 or 5 years time the games are going to be out of this world

Very true, look at the ps2 titles now some of the games have amazing grafics etc compaired to when it first came out.

@ Blu -Ray- they cant just pull great games out of the hat. And, Warhawk just came out and is a great title so you can play that. in my opinion, Lair is a very good title if you take the time to do all of the training missions and learn the controls. heavenly sword also comes out in a few weeks, and then next month you have ratchet and clank and uncharted in november, what more do you want?

I agree with Ryoma and I wish I’d waited before paying out on a console that is 3 to 4 yrs away from being any good! The most fun I’ve had on it in ages is finding the perfect wallpaper for the XMB, thank God for my 360 and Bioshock! While you are all waiting for the ps3 to actually get a decent game you are missing out on the 360's amazing line-up of AAA titles! While I realise there will be some games that will blow me away eventually I can't help but feel like a sucker for believing Sony’s hype. The ps3 was supposed to be so much better than the 360 (particularly in terms of graphics) and it quite plainly isn't!

The PS3 will dominate and MS's devistation of a console will fall to our knees and whither away. Begone with you!

I understand the tension toward Sony right now, I mean hey they do know how to "hype" up a game thats for sure. FACT is many are looking for that 1 GREAT game and for some that is warhawk for others it is not and with games like BIOSHOCK coming out for the Hexbox it hurts being a PS3 owner- we want our "great" games too. I believe they are coming and am still glad I bought a PS3 over Xbox! no doubt!!

Wow very brave throwing insults from the safety of your computer keyboard, did your chest puff up with macho pride while you were writing it? And you call me a child! Let me put you straight on a few things. Firstly, as a ps3 owner I have every right to post on this site whether you like what I post or not. Secondly, I also have every right to be disappointed with a console that has so spectacularly failed to live up to its hype. And finally, my post was not an attempt to upset or insult my fellow ps3 owners I was merely pointing out the fact that Kazuo Hirai’s promise hardly makes up for the disappointing software so far and its not my fault that you didn’t have the forethought to get a second console to see you through this dry spell.
So stop being such a big baby and stop crying just because someone says something negative about your console of choice. If this upsets you then I suggest you go running to your mother and when she asks you what’s wrong you can say ‘sob the nasty man sob said my sob ps3 sob was a disa sob ppointment waaah waaah waaaaaah!!! The reason that the console reach it's limit's in terms of power doesn't mean that there will not be great games until then!!!!!!!!!!! As i read the post here almost everybody here are judging the games Graphics over Gameplay.... it's true that sony tends to hype alot about they products, but im still happy with my ps3 right now

I much prefer the PS3 lineup so far. If you were actually serious about that (which I doubt) I recommend Motorstorm, Resistance, Warhawk, Oblivion, Virtua Fighter 5, and Stardust HD. Has any console had a better first year of titles?

Yes you complete idiot nearly every console in history!!!! With the exception of Warhawk (I have yet to have a chance to play it so I wont comment) I own all those games you mentioned, Motorstorm, Stardust and VF3 are fantastic, Resistance is, at best, an average fps and I’ve had Oblivion on the 360 for 18 months now. Since when has three great games, an average one and a year old port represented the best first year line up for a console ever? And what has this got to do with anything anyway? This article is about the ps3 only reaching its potential in 5-6 yrs time and my comments were related to this. Why don’t you read my second post you moron and maybe then you’d realise where I’m coming from. People are cheering about something that’s not going happen for half a decade! Sony promised us miracles, they promised us a machine that was leaps ahead of the competition and they have not delivered! I believed them when they said ‘the next gen doesn’t start till we say it does’ I just didn’t expect to have to wait 5-6 yrs for it to happen! There is no denying that there has been a lack of games for the ps3 and the ones that are coming out are not living up to the hype. As much as I love blue ray and browsing the net whilst lying on the couch what I really want are some games that live up to Sony’s promise. As I have said before I am not trying to upset people I am just stating my opinion and you really need to be a little less sensitive. God you fanboys make me sick!!!!
