As long as I can play someone elso online without having to pay an additional fee ontop of my cable bill then I am happy. I have XBL but none of the "services" i really used except for playing other people on line. And I didn't know there needed a service to do so.

What does Microsoft know about "service"? With the high failure rate of 360 and bugs in their Operating Systems (I do use it, but lets face it, it has bugs, I mean XP was released onto the market with 20000 known bugs)

At this moment in PSNs life I do have to agree that Live cripples PSN when it comes to a comparison. PSN really needs features that connect the community such as In-Game messaging (yes I said it), Cross-game Invites, and Cross-game chat to really keep us close to our friends as we play games, tying that friendship. PSN still has much time to catch up and I'm sure it will in the come years, but right now with M$'s movie downloads and show downloads PSN still has a way to go. I'm not hating on Sony so don'tr get me wrong- I just really think the PSN could hit a few more milestones before it can be compared to Live's glory. Time is what it needs and is what it has. In a few years a free PSN will dominate a costly Live, allowing us to do what Live subscribers can and more for FREE! Viva la PSN.

Here's a couple counters- Halo 3 isn't at all amazing- graphically and gameplay wise it's nothing compared to other games this generation. Mass effect has retarded AI, bad glitches, freeze-ups, and a looooot of frameskip. It's what happens when you try to build a great game on crappy hardware. R&C, Uncharted, Resistance, GT, Warhawk, PS Eye (we can interact with that while the competitor's sits there), Folklore, HS, UT3, and Haze all games from many seperate genres all excellent games. tre60 has GoW, and Halo3 and... Mass Effect???? Your great game, Mass Effect, has too many bugs to be great. So that knocks 360s best games down to two. To have a console live it's life around two solid games isn't saying much at all. PS3 is gonna get only better and better while 360 will hit a point of stunted growth do to it's early hardware. Look at Mass Effect- sure it loks nice but it screws up too much due to it's hardware. Oh I wouldn't count on M$ devloping games only- M$ itself can't develop good games. They need people like Bungie and Epic to make their games.

How much does Xbox live Gold actually cost? £40 per person is a figure I've heard for the UK. $50 per person in the US. Now how many users are there, not too long ago MS were bragging 6m+ overall, don't know how many Gold users. but I'm guessing there's a couple of million at least. So, £40 per person, x 2m people, £80m (or lets say $100m). Now, is the Live service really worth $100m per year? Sounds to me like Xbox owners will be paying for their extended warranties through the back door.

Microsoft makes $billions in after-tax profit per year, they should be providing the Live service for free to it's loyal customers. Seems like a rip-off to me, and if I do get an Xbox I won't be paying to play online, I'll be doing that (and socialising) for free on the PSN.

Being an ex-360 owner/ Live subscriber (after 3rd dead 360 decided to go for something more reliable) he's my view.

Live Is better than PSN... reason, Microsfot have had 6 years + of developing and improving the service where as Sony virtually ditched the Ps2 online service and have only started developing the PSN with the Ps3.  When Xbox LIve was first launched it wasa limited service, comprising of Voice chat in game, Freinds list and cross game invites.. bar the cross game invites PSN has this and it is only a matter of time before the cross game invite arrives.

Anybody who says PSN is better than LIve is living in a dream world, but PSN is better than live if compared to when Live was around for the same amount of time (aprox 1yr). LIve didn't havea ignore/block function in freinds list or playersmet function, didnt have video chat, no online store again live does now.. but not when it was just a year old.

PsN Does have a number of advantages over Xbox Live, which are: PSN is Free, Downloads charged on money rather than points, You do not have to own a credit card to buy stuff online debit cards also work. Video/voice chat is upto 6 people in XMB compared to just 2 while in 360's chat/video chat. PSN suffers far less lag overall than Xbox live.

PSN needs the following in my opinion, XMB in game with function to mute aswell as avoid players met and ability to add freinds to XMB while in game, Cross game Invites and messaging. I predict that with-in 12-18 moths time these features and more will be added to PSN and the Ps3.

Both in terms of HArdware and the Online service, For gaming Xbox has practically reached it's potential, Ps3 owners can sit back and enjoy the ride as it along with the PSN matches and overtakes the 360 and Xbox Live... Just be patient, give Sony time to sort out the good from the bad, unlike MS who chuck everything in Good and bad.

now, without wanting to sound fanboyish (i do own both 360 and ps3) i personally find PSN to have been better for online gaming so far, despite the lack of friend invites and voice chat and what have you. I dont have to pay to play a game iv already paid for and iv experienced far more lag on LIVE than i have on PSN, so far for me PSN "IS" better for online gaming handsdown. As a "service" probs not just yet.

Of course PSn can't compare with live, cause one charge you fee with lagging and one doesn't charge you fee with no laggin period. I don't care about corss chat and other craps. I WANT NO LAGGIN GAMING.

The only thing that I don't like is with these ports, you can't search for online games (R6V, and others), they just throw you in one. I especially can't believe that they don't let you do it in COD4. Speaking of that, COD4 is the ONLY game I've experienced lag with online. What a lot of people are missing as the main point is the PSN is pretty solid for it being only a year old. I've had no problems with any online games that I've played (Warhawk plays like a dream) And Sony is taking the wait, see, learn and listen approach to it's network. I have no doubt that Home will be a fantastic new service that will probably rival if not exceed LIVE in many ways. I also own all systems on the market. I do enjoy games on my 360 but I'm getting more play out of my PS3. And whoever says that the PS3 doesn't have variety is clearly blind. That jerk posting his idiot rants here claims there is no variety on the PS3 must only play FPS games and racing games. That's all that seems to be on the 360. And since MS is only banking on the fact that HALO 3 is the system seller well they must have peaked because I've seen used copies of HALO 3 at my local GameStop. The game's only been out a month and people are already getting rid of it. Which means they're BORED! I've just been blown away by Uncharted Drake's Fortune and next year's upcoming exclusives will definitely bring the PS3 back in the main spotlight. I own a 360 Elite because there are a few titles that I like to play on the 360 along with the upcoming Mass Effect. Unless they cn keep up the pace of bringing more variety outside of the Shooter or racer genre I don't see the 360 doing too well once the PS3 picks up steam!

The 360 has some great games out (Halo 3, Bioshock, Mass Effect)

But what the PS3 has (IN ITS FIRST YEAR) is variety. All of those are shooters. Mass Effect is also an RPG but still mixed with a shooter.

We have a racer (motorstorm), action/platform (ratchet, uncharted, heavenly), an online fps (resistance), an online flyer/shooter (warhawk), a soon to be great fps (HAZE) a racer (GT5), a virtual card game (Eye of J) a guncom game (time crisis),  a story driven innovative rpg (folklore), and a create your own game GAME (Little Big Planet) and that's not including third party games.

Oh yeah we have Blue-Ray, PSP Connectivity, Sixaxis, Eyetoy. Have you seen what they have been doing with that? If not check out the Playstation blog for some mind blowing videos. Regardless of anything, the PS3 is set. All sides are covered.

The 360 has a dying format for their games and hopefully they havent blown their wad cause this next year is gonna be harsh on them with all the PS3 big guns.

Dude... i've seen your 360 demos at some local stores, and they really don't see very friendly to me! And people actually pays for that!? PSN  is free, easy to reach, managable and got lotsa nice free content! I lived the first 2 month with my PS3 entirely of demos from the PS Store, since my budget was a little low... Robert Bach sounds like an idiot pretending that there is no competition. I think that he is truly misguided if he thinks that Xbox Live will stay on top from here on out. In a year PSN has done almost what it took Microsoft 5 years to do. Xbox Live, right now is a better service ONLY because it took them 5 years to get it that way. It wasn't even close to how it is right now back in 2000. Sony came out of the gate with NO Lag gaming which is beautiful. All the features that are included in PSN are just the tip of the iceberg. Sony will finish the main features we want really soon: Custom Soundtracks (which I saw a video of it in use on youtube) and in-game messaging real soon. I'd say if not by the end of this year, it will be by Spring or summer of 2008 or maybe early 2008. I'm not worried in the slightest. That's the one thing that I've been seeing. No one has patients. Please give Sony a chance to give us  those features without any bugs. I'd rather have those features in top working condition than having them patched up within a month because it's bricking PS3s. I'm next to positve that they WILL deliver on these features. It's just a matter of time.

And for 50 bucks a year? youve got to be kidding me. Honestly warhawk has up to 32 players online while halo 3 their main title only supports 16 players online and lags often. microsoft is actually pretty smart. you have to give them credit for figuring out how to r.a.p.e their customers for over 400 mil annually.

First off Xbox live is a great service but to say PSN isn't a service is trash talk plain and simple. PSN is getting better and its free.

Second, there is more to a game machine then the online service! If this was the only thing gamers want then the Wii wouldn't be selling millions....

Thirdly to say the PS3 does not have good games right now isn't true in my opinion. Right now we have:

1.) Rachet and clank future tools of destruction

2.) Uncharted Drakes Fortune

3.) Eye of Judgement

4.) Motorstorm

5.) Ninja Gaiden

6.) Resistance Fall of man

7.) The Darkness

8.) WarHawk

and many many others. These are high quality games that I find well worth the money.

Of course everyone wants MGS4, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy Vs 13, Unreal Tournament, little big planet, and home, but in order for these to be AAA we must give them time to complete them. Why are so many people in such a rush for these games when the list I created above is just a fraction of the great games out for PS3.That I don't understand.

well ive expirience more lagging on my xbox 360 than my ps3......whenever i try to use my computer n my xbox on the same time its imposible i just start lagging  n also when someone gets disconected or trys to lagg on the xbox it affects everyone(Example)when im playing halo 3 some people try to stand by n my whole screen turns blue dont know but it sucks...On my ps3 i can use my computer n play online...if someone trys to lagg it doesnt effect me maybe they will die like 1 min after but u can still play without being interupted....so in my opinion PSN is better than XBL i dont care about ingame xmb as long as i can have fun im kool with it o n if i wanna chat with my friend we can go to a chat room of 6 people in my ps3

Halo 3? don't make me laugh. Halo 3 owns both titles for most overhyped game ever and most disappointed game ever. After playing so many FPS on the 360 I wasn't really interestee in Halo 3 especially that it looks too much like Halo 2.2. So my plan was just to rent it and beat the campaign but after so many have been disappointed and having mates who were also after beating the game I had second thought about bothering to play it. Another mate of mine owns an independant game store and he is a Halo fan but still said that 11 copies came back in a couple of days. He likes the game for online however he was disappointed about the campaign. Many prefere to stick with Halo 2 online aswell.

I like Gears you mention. very short though. I still want to play Forza 2. PGR sucks. I am wanting Mass Effect. I think thats it for 360. There are others like Call of Duty but I'd prefere to get it for PS3 as 1. The disc doesn't scratch, 2. Better joypad and 3. free online. Live has the invites and so forth but I'm not into that and its sure not worth the subscription fee.

Live has 5 years to get to where it is and PSN has one year and its not too far behind live. And this is because Microsoft never anticipated anyone else trying to match them so the evolution was slow. If HOME works for Sony then it will have a network better than Live in my opinion becauase for me I'll be doing more in Sony's service than in Microsofts.

Oh and stop being a fanboy by saying 360 has all this and PS3 has nothing when you'll have millions disagreeing with you.

 

One things for sure if you subtract some of lives features to match everything on PSN including the amount of content, So both Live and PSN is has the same amount of content and features, I personally think PSN is better.

XBL offers some cool stuff, the video is cool for the anime and stuff but man, they charge for freaking EVERYTHING. i own both has probably never even owned a ps3.  Why the name, who you trying to convince.  First of all, halo sucks.  I am tired of all of this hype.  If people just talked about it as it is, a mediocre game, I might have more interest in playing them longer than the few minutes it takes to infuriate me that it is such an overly hyped game.  And now that you've discussed all of the 360s advantages lets discuss the ps3s.  I am sure that you are one of those idiots who says the 360 is cheaper than the ps3.  Okay, lets go back to when the ps3 first came out and it was a little pricey.  What did the ps3 include?  Full backwards compatability.  360 has never had that.  HDMI.  360 only adopted that recently leaving all of its previous install base wanting more, which they likely went out and bought one, selling their old one for a loss.  Then  there's blu ray.  You'll probably argue that blu ray sucks and that hd dvd kicks its @55.  I will not argue that point because I have a better point.  Even if hd dvd kicks blu rays @55, where is it in the 360?  it doesn't have it does it.  You have to buy a $200 add on.  Suddenly the 360s price advantage isn't looking too great.  Then there's wireless networking, which the ps3 has always had but the 360 is lacking.  You have to buy a $50 dollar addon.  Then I hear a story of microsoft putting an hd dvd drive in a new version of their system and include wireless networking.  Jesus, how many times is microsoft going to make you upgrade your consoles before they equal the ps3, which I think I have proven just now that it does not.  What does the 360 have over the ps3?  The only thing you mention are halo 3 (grossly over rated game) and a couple other games I couldn't give a crap about, and xbox live.  Xbox live may have the advantage over psn for now, but god, its had a year on the marketplace that the ps3 hasn't had.  PSN will catch up and then that free thing everyone keeps mention will seem awesome to anyone but a microsoft lapdog like you.  And let's talk about some of the disadvantages you talk about on the ps3.  Lair?  A disadvantage?  Have you even played the game, or are you taking gamespots microsoft endorsed opinion of the game.  Anyone who has actually played the game can tell you that it has been unfairly reviewed. Sites like that jump at any chance they can get, just like you obviously do to tear down the ps3.  To be honest, I have never talked crap about the xbox 360 on any website, which it seems that you do on a regular basis about the ps3.  You talk about everyone on this site getting any chance they can get to spout off the inferiorities of the xbox, well I don't know about anyone else reading the garbage you have written, but it looks like you have made a hobby of talking crap about the ps3 and going to its fansites to spout off it's supposed inferiorities.  I on the otherhand do not need to go to xbox 360 sites and trash talk that system.  I am confident of my system of choice and do not need to put down someone elses to feel better about my choice.  And it seems by what you have said that you have come here quite often.  I really hope you read this and respond to it you arrogant prick, but judging by your last post you have already run from this arguement you so ignorantly started, but I will be checking back often for a response.

By next year 360 will be down because ps3 will have more games. Beside Sony was the first one, who developed 3d games, after many years Microsoft came and stole Sony idea by creating garbage named xbox. Maybe xbox has better psn but ps3 will do better by next year. Even many game developers said that because xbox has been out longer then ps3 but just give ps3 more time.

anyone who has played CoD4 knows that P2P multiplayer sucks and that dedicated servers, like in CoD 1, 2 & 3 and Warhawk, are clearly better. Why should I pay $50 to use my already expensive internet connection and not even get any servers?

In my last response to Iownboth, I forgot what this article was about.  This guy, what's his name, Crap Talking Robbie or something?  This is nothing but that, shlt talking at it's worst.  You will never get a better argument to this article than the one simple word that I am seeing in just about every comment.  FREE!  That's the number one thing, everything else will follow.  By the sounds of it, most of it has already come.  I don't know about online gaming, I have never been a big fan of that (maybe that's why I don't get the big halo craze (or maybe it just really does suck).  But as far as what the playstation store offers, I have been more than happy with it.  Maybe one day I will get into online gaming, and if I do, I will be more than a little happy that my console of choice will allow me to try it for free.  Thank you sony for staying true to your fans and making the best gaming system possible with the technology we have as apposed to microsoft who only puts the technology into their already existing system as a response to a better machine having already done it.  Microsoft, you suck, there I said it.  I have always tried to be civil on these sites, never talking crap, but you and your xbots just never cease to talk your crap.

The only reason you might hear PS3 fanboys getting defensive (which I actually think they are more on the offensive) is because we are a loyal and passionate breed.  Unfortunately for those who don't remember how these console wars pan out... there is NEVER a clear winner.  However, if you remember the N64 and PS1 console war... what happened when Final Fantasy went exclusive to the Playstation platform?  If you guessed it pushed Sony's install base into the lead then you guessed correctly.  PS3 has sold just as many units in it's first year as the 360 did, but at a higher price point.  Time will prove you wrong, and lastly, you sound more defensive than anybody else so get over it!!!

Don't pay any attention to "Iownboth." He's an idiot. I beat Halo 3 on normal mode in 3 hours. So even his gross overstatement of how short HS is doesn't compare to the "blink and miss it" experience of Halo 3. Resistance, Warhawk, Uncharted, Haze, and Motorstorm are all AAA games that came out within the PS3's first year. The 360 got one good game after it's first year. In fact, the 360's grand total of "games worth playing" has just now reached 3. Congragulations. Maybe in 2 more years you'll have 2 more games worth playing. I must say I love my ps3 and I am satisfied with the psn and I know it can only get better. In my opinion XBL at the moment is better than PSN because of the features and the amount of time it has had to progress and frankly $50 yearly is nothing in terms of expense. Truthfully I wouldnt mind paying that or any amount for PSN if I knew it would speed up the progession and add to the experience of PSN

Honestly I feel that each are in their own league. Yeah XBL is good but PSN is good also and each has its own things. I wouldn't compare the two. I think Sony will win just because of Home.

Admittedly I'm still sitting on the fence for this next gen battle.  I'm leaning toward PS3, just coz I had PS1&2... but admittedly XBox was a better machine than PS2.

Anyway, my take is, and like some of you have said, XBL is a better developed service than PSN, and I don't see this changing because it is funded by the users.  Sony won't have the same incentive to develop PSN, as they are having to do this off their own backs... unless they open up development to be done by a PSN community.  Even still, as witnessed by PC OS, the one that's got money behind it wins out (Windows vs Linux).  I'm still leaning toward PS3 because the 360 is way more expensive.... it seems like I'd go through 10 of them before the 4th gen comes along, so thats £2999 vs £399 for a PS3.  Then PSN is free, and for the "bits" I'd bother using, I'm sure it'll be fine for that too.  I don't have time to explore every "service" these networks have to offer anyway, and resent have to pay for alot of stuff I just won't use.

I do agree that live is better than psn at the moment.The thing MS fail to point out is that live was pretty crap for a year or 2 after it was launched.So PSN will get better,bearing in mind it has somebody working on it that set up the original live,and it will also be free still.

Ok, theres a little something evry1 seems 2 neglect. the ps3 was not designed solely as a gmes console. sure it plays amazin games and stuff but it was designed to be an ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM!!! so how can it be compared to xbox360b straight up. if u want them on a level playing field add the £30 subscription fees for m$ online £130 for a HD-DVD player, an extra £15 on every controller for rechargeable battery packs, £60 for a wireless internet adapter n then the loss of the xbox every couple of months when it dies agen :P. In reality ur gettin alot more for your money with sony. btw dnt get me started on the hardware differences - ps3 is FAR better.

 

my flatm8 has a 360 (second 1) and xbox live. I honestly dont notice the difference, theres more stuff in the store but thats expected since its been out longer but evry game he plays online has serious lag if he can get on at all, n da points system 4 purchases is the most blatant psychological pricing i've ever seen (making them buy points so that when they spend their points they don't instantly relate it to real money) but you know expected of m$.

 

Now as for psn it has evrythin of xbl i need and its FREE! couple in no Lag, an internet browser n the upcoming Home. ok xb2b1, u clearly don't like the ps3, all you do is bad mouth it. this site was made so people who like ps3 can find out news on games, updates etc. in the gaming world, just like iownboth360andps3 why don't you go onto a 360 site instead of wasting our time reading comments about how better the 360 is cos truth is its not its just older.

 

And as for a console war, neither console will win, both have large fan bases willing to pay for software on that console, the one thing I will say is that ps3 is designed to go for alot longer than the 360, we'll be seeing a new xbox in the upcoming years when ps3 is still running strong:P. I don't know about the rest of you but I'm pretty sure I invested in the right system.

Windows media extender? This allows streaming/viewing content from a PC right. Well guess what. OK ppl, I actually appreciate XB1B2s' comments, it's his opinion, and ps3 fanboys shouldn't make personal remarks, I've learnt stuff I didn't know about XBL.  It's healthier to have a debate,but not get swept up in a group mentality on how great the PS3 is.  Personally HD movies, video chat and multiplayer matchups is of interest, but all the rest is wasted on me, and I hate paying for stuff I don't need!

@ chimmy... personally i use my ps3 for web browsing, but the majority of people who run windows do so because they pretty much have to. i know linux pc's and macs are popular but the majority of the games and programs out there require windows. Most people have their hands tied here.
