PSP2 may feature same power as original Xbox

Sony’s attention on its handheld market doesn’t stop at the new PSP Go; the company is already working on the PSP2. According to a report by Eurogamer.es, the PSP2 will be powered by PowerVR technology from Imagination Technologies.
The new PSP2 will feature a quad core iteration of the low-power SGX543MP chip, codenamed Hydra, according to the report from Eurogamer.es. The chip is said to be close to the GPU in the iPhone 3GS, and is a generational leap over older PowerVR MBX processors.
The SGX543MP is a multicore processor, with up to 16 cores available. Early reports indicate that Sony has opted for a quad configuration in the PSP2, offering 133 million polygons per second, and 4Gpixels/sec fillrate. Technical jargon aside, if these reports are accurate, the PSP2 will match the original Xbox.
We may see even more power in the PSP2 as Imagination Technologies describes the chip as a GP-GPU, giving it the ability to operate as both CPU and graphics processor. This could mean Sony is pushing to have all of the PSP2’s processing on a single chip, possibly saving power and increasing graphics.
For now we’ll keep this as a rumor, but we certainly look forward to hearing more about the PSP2.

I was very interested in the PSP Go but for the PSP2, I have a different opinion. From what above is stated, it seems like it will be a promising hand held. waiting for some more details..

@andysw
The PS3 is 400 bucks now... do you really want a 400+ dollar PSP2?
Portables need to stay in the portable price range, particularly since they have to compete with Apple crap now.
The thing I don't get about this is: Is this mips based? because if it's not, it means PS2 emulation on it is impossible... PSP had PS1 emulation, I'd hoped PSP2 had PS2 emulation... Guess that was too much to ask for.

Oh please, not technically possible, nor desirable. GPGPU is for number crunching, not general purpose tasks like interrupts and device drivers. They will need a cpu too.
Maybe it'll be ARM based with any luck - plenty of grunt and very long battery life. Could even run linux ... then again, they wouldn't want to compete too directly with pandora, etc. CELL is too big/too power hungry for a handheld.

I dont really care that PSU is giving us a lot of rumors. This is a playstation site, so anything thats considered "playstation news", should be posted. I dont mean to make it sound like this, but stop making a big deal out of it. This should get you excited, not mad/irritated......... great news btw PSU, keep it up

@19
I know that game consoles releases are not as common as other tecnnologyes, but try to look it this way: most cellular phone companies releases a new phone every month, and some with minor modifications from the last month model. Therefore is not actually really strange they could have 3 different versions of PSP for 3 different kinds of consumers
At least that would depend if they really make something way too different with the psp2, and not just a new colour or new buttons. But if you look at the ps3, they have changed the model very often since first release, something that didn't happened on the previous generation.

One thing's for sure,it'll be stronger than the wii.;D
@Dave-The-Rave
You're absolutely correct,which makes me wonder if Sony would make the graphical leap towards the nex gen consoles,i'm not saying that it would be AS powerful as the ps3,but hopefully,on a 5 inch(possibly smaller) screen it won't need to be to produce the same level of effects.

First of all, there is such thing as "computer on a chip" configurations, and they are not just for number crunching. This is what many of the new MID and other new mobile tech is using. I"ll agree, they do need to put that separate GP in, but these configurations do save power and space.
And let us not get too excited here, even though it sounds too computer savy to be a rumor, I do believe the same guys made the CPU in the current PSP (I may be wrong so correct me). And every one still whining about analog sticks need to go somewhere. We should be hoping for new innovations here, Afte all the current PSPs do suffer from actuall problems we should hope get fix by the official 2.

I Have found my proof. The Zune HD uses the same resolution as the psp though sports the NVIDIA Tegra chip. PSP2 Has some competition. They need to go the TEGRA 600 rout and raise to screen resolution to compete in the hand held market, especially considering Samsung and motorola have now opted to use the tegra in their new PHONES. Computer -on-a-chip is becoming the way to go. Or at least lets hope who ever make the PSP2's Chipset can rival the NVIDIA Tegrew in specs. The OMNIA series and other phone and mp3 players cannot be alowed to out-power The PSP Sony.
