Peter Moore: PS2 and Killzone don't deliver

In an interview with the Guardian Gamesblog team, former Microsoft executive Peter Moore has claimed that Sony promised more than they could deliver with the PlayStation 2.
"They did a tremendous job... where they promised the consumer something they probably believed they were going to deliver, but they never did," Moore observed. "PlayStation 2 - it was the emotion engine it was games coming to life, Real Player was going to be on there, a full network browser… and they just never delivered."
The EA Sports president described Sony's approach as "pre-emptive guerrilla PR" and cited the infamous E3 2005 Killzone trailer as a further example. "I got lambasted for what I did with Xbox for 360, because I was determined we were going to show real footage even if it was alpha or beta. And then Sony came up with that Killzone video – and they still haven't shipped the game! Have you seen the video?! The game will never be the video! But what they did again was they placed doubt. I mean it's a classic PR tactic."
Peter Moore is one of the industry's most recognised (and most voluble) figures. He oversaw the rise and fall of the Dreamcast in his capacity as President and COO of Sega of America, before joining Microsoft as vice-president of the firm's Interactive Entertainment Business division. Last July he jumped the Xbox 360 ship for Electronic Arts, reportedly to spend more time with his family in the San Francisco bay area.
Moore qualified his damning appraisal of the PlayStation 2 marketing campaign: "I was angry with Sony at the time, but in their shoes I probably would have done the same thing." Still, pretty rabid stuff. Be sure to give us your two cents (or pennies) in the comments thread below.

Don't care too much for Killzone 2 anymore(it's just taking too long), but this guy is just as dumb as the lazy PS3 developers. They don't know what PS3 can really do because they won't take the time to figure it out and thus will never realize the potential. 360 is reaching it's technological limit, PS3 is just beginning.

He sounds about right to me. I feel that Sony have done the same thing with Home and LBP. We have been tempted and teased with these products for over a year with the idea that its 'just around the corner' only for it to be delayed for a few more months.. Talk about dangling a carrot...
BUT!!!... it’s still a lot better than what Xbox have done.. They have recently fired an employee who said that his company put machines out knowing full well that they would RRoD. Ha!! reminds me of that scene from Fight Club when they talk about When it costs more money to recall a product, as apposed to paying for replacements. they wont bother..
I know this blog was a bout the PS2 but if he wants to say how he wanted to 'show real footage of FALLOUT....' hmm, well you see my point.
I have a lot more respect for Sony’s tactics than microsofts.... I have patience for good service

wow what a jerk. i liked to say im surprised but but he works for M$. really like this guy can talk they dont even have a hd player and they charge for their online but dont even have deicated serversin their piece o sh1t. screw M$ and screwPeter Moore. this guy is a joke. did anyopne see the demo footage from this past E# it was on G4 and it looked amazing. of course it wont look like the video they NEVER do no mater what companies say. take a look again peter i would rather a company take their time and get it right instead of rushing a piece of inferior equipment. and ps3 has plans on getting a fully capable web browser. i think it works just fine as is for right now. i have a comp so my ps3 doesnt replace it i just use it when i dont want to go upstairs. WOW thats all i can say is WOW typically M$ and this jerk spouting off sh1t they have no idea what they are talking about. good luck D-Bag.

The PR machines run the adverising campaigns and the game developers try to push their products their way but it can be misrepresented because of the PR machine. Peter Moore has some nerve to be complaining about this, he runs a company that is supposed to be supporting all platforms and this comes out of his mouth. I guess he must have wiped off that GTA IV tattoo and showed his MS tattoo is still underneath. Not good picking sides when you are supposed to be supporting all.

i agree what he said but the reason ps2 was great was cos the good weighed out the bad. great game made up for broken promises.
one thing i want to say to Kajii is that ps2 was a weak console hardware wise compared to xbox yet it was a better console overall and so dont expect ps3 to be better jus cos of the better hardware. games make a console

First of all...... the PS2 delivered for me and I am guessing millions of others. Second of all that actual KZ2 gameplay (the stuff that reviewers and others have had hands-on at the past several gaming events) looks very close to the target render, in some cases better.

Kettle calling the pot black! When Xbox first launched they did far, far worse. They faked tech demos and games such as Alice (later Halo 2) calling them real-time when they were not. Sony NEVER mentioned Killzone 2 as being real-time and consciously placed it outside the realtime demonstrations. The KZ2 teaser was CLEARLY not real-time and the only one calling it realtime were Microsoft spinsters trying to discredit Sony.
Peter better put his bias aside if he wants to keep his job with such a large multi-platform developer.

i actually completely agree with the man! i loved my ps2 as a games machine, but an entertainment machine it was not!! i remeber sony year after year promising the network but never delivering, whilst the original xbox was brilliant for online play, the ps2 wasnt built for it, clearly it was just an after thought. i think he's a little harsh on killzone two though, i think itl be one of the most graphically impressive games on a console, and is very near to the e3 2005 vid, but comon sony!!! hurry up!!!

Well comparing killzone 1 on the ps2 with what the xbox was offering at the time I think it was a pretty intense shooter it did have its issues though and I believe it was very short. The E3 2005 trailer of killzone 2 is exactly what it is CGI, I guess its because people see it they think its in-game. Alot of companies use CGI it boosts the feeling to the viewer of something to "look forward too" not neccesarily going to look just like it. Maybe I am the only one that accepts this, it never said in-game graphics or in-game engine on that E3 video I believe. CGI Trailers are one thing, in-game graphics are another Sony studios are not the only ones that do this. You need to understand the difference between these 2.

They might have left out a few features they had planned for the ps2 but saying that the most successful console ever in gaming history didn't deliver seems like a bit of a stretch. I always try to ignore this guy whenever he opens his mouth because he may say he doesn't work for microsoft anymore but if i didn't know any better i'd say he's still on the payroll. Otherwise why even bother saying this stuff?

Of course they are compairing the P2 and the xtrash cause The PS3 can do a heck of alot more the the 360 and everyone here is right the PS3 is now going to make a statement to the 360. Peter Moore is just scared that his old company will be owned by the better console which the PS3. But yet Peter Moore said that EA will do more for the PS3 cause they made a crap load of money from the bluray. But have seen any PS3 Exclusive yet from them. But yet he wants to trah talk sony. how does the ps2 not deliver its given a lot more great games than the xbox or the 360 yes the first kilzone was not a halo killer but the ps2 itsleft was by far the best consol of all time the ff series, gta, shaow oc, gow 1 and 2, mgs2 and 3, dmc, ttime spliters, the list goes on foreverrrrrrrr. but its not much coming from a guy who cant keep a job becuase hes a moron. only ea would hire and keep him because it only producess crapy games aside from madden which is basicly the same game every year

Strange that he would be attacking the PS2. He obviously hasn't seen any recent footage of Killzone 2 to be bringing up that E3 video now. Lazy developers are the PS3's main problem at this point, but I bought mine in early 07 and have never regretted it. Games get delayed all the time for every platform. What else would you expect from the former leader of the Circle Jerk Nation? Now he works for EA, one of the laziest of the lazy. I'm hoping Deadspace will be good but with the EA brand on it I have my doubts.

Let's see...the PS2 came out in 2000 and he's commenting on it now? Can't wait to hear his comments on PS3 in 2014! Killzone was postponed forever but still finally came out in 2004...some one have a calendar? What year is it? Any one know his thoughts on the NES?

Killzone 2 looks awesome. I don't care what this guy says, I will get it and I guarantee it will look amazing. The gameplay that I've seen of it is very impressive. KZ1 and PS2: welcome to 4 years ago, moore. And I've been harping on ea for the last year, so now maybe others will see what I'm always on about regarding ea's affair with m$. It's pretty lame considering the 60 percent of their software sales come from Sony platforms, yet they allow this shltstain to make comments like that. I haven't purchased any ea games thus far and will continue to do so. I hope some of you will do the same. Show some resistance and self-validity.
