Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) announced today that the PlayStation 2 has sold over 50 million units in North America.

Released in 2000, PS2 was the first console of its time to support the then new DVD format. The system soon cemented itself ahead of the competition thanks to an influx of triple A titles including Grand Theft Auto III, Devil May Cry and Final Fantasy X, with subsequent price cuts further driving hardware sales over the last few years.

John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said that the continued strong sales are due to lower-income consumers and families, while support for the machine continues to remain strong.

"We don't intend on discarding the system any time soon," said Koller.

This article reminded me that I paid over $300 for my PS2 when it first came out and no one was complaining over the price back then. Now the PS3 is $399 and people won't buy one unless there is a price drop, go figure.  By the way, my original PS2 still kicking strong, that's what you get for buying quality instead of xcrap.

i know it's a great thing that it's still achieving numbers like this, but isn't it actually pushing buyers away from buying the ps3? it's been out for 8 years, but it's gotta come to an end sometime. i say just stop production and focus on ps3.

wow, thats a big number. I still think the PS2 offers way more bang for the buck than the PS3 does.
