Sony's PlayStation 2 remains the highest selling console on the market, over and above PS3 and Xbox 360. A staggering 115 million units have been sold worldwide so far.
"We encourage third parties to continue development for PS2. If they bring a PS3 version out, they can bring a PS2 version out as well," said Sony rep David Reeves in a recent interview. "What happened last time with PS1 is that they left a lot of money on the table by making the transition too quickly,"
Since the launch of the PlayStation 3 last October, the PlayStation 2 has managed to beat its "big brother" in sales every month. Looking at other consoles, Microsoft's Xbox 360 has only beaten the PS2 twice in monthly sales since its late-2005 launch. Nintendo's Wii has proven more resilient by consistently outselling the PS2 with a small number of exceptions.
Judging the current market, it's easy to see that Sony will continue supporting the PlayStation 2 for years to come. That means more games adding to an already impressive library, and keeping alive what could be one of the best consoles in gaming history.

The focus should be on selling PS3's but if its more profitable pushing PS2 its hard to say no. They should atleast release PS2 titles that have special extras if they are played on a PS3 and that way give an incentive to people to upgrade to PS3. Problem is the backward compatibility on PS3 is broken now that the hardware compatibility has been removed. Ive got a lot of PS2 titles and I know how broken PS3 compatibility is. - I think Sony should reconsider their strategy. They are leaving a lot of cash & customers on the table...
Dont change a thing. the PS2 is doing good then and even now....even tho I have a PS3....and I still like to my PS2 games as always....nothing needs to be abandon.
The ps2 is making up for the ps3's lack of sales. Of course they'll keep it alive. When it starts to sell poorly then they'll decide to cut it.
i don't think it's fair to count out the ps2 just because we are in a new gen. i feel as if last gen is just as important even if MS and nintindo bowed out early. whos to say that MS and nintindo set the trens of the industry just because they couldn't dominate? if ps2 is still selling and so is the ps3 then by default sony has already "won" this gen and futher more is the best selling game console maker ever. and that is something that can't never be disputed.
thats unreal..
After finally playing God of War 2 and Shadow of the Colossus it is easy to understand why the PS2 is the beast that it is. In terms of quality gameplay, no next-gen title is close. Not Bioshock, not Resistance, not Gears, etc. I hope once there are games like than that on the PS3 history repeats itself.
geez it almost seems like they didn't need to release the PS3 yet, they could have rode the PS2 coattail for another year and then the price would have been lower from launch this coming november.
If the PS2 is still selling so well, than by all means....keep it. Its making money for Sony, and probably doing a pretty good job of offsetting any current losses on the PS3 harware. If it helps enough, we may even see a price cut sooner than later.
It's funny, When they said the PS3 was being planned for a 10 year life cycle people laughed at Sony, but the PS2 is already nearly hitting that mark! You know something Let the PS2 keep them going, it's not like Nintendo were quick to ever kill a platform that was doing well for them. I mean how long did the GBA last on ancient technology? Plus it helps out to have cheap games for the PS3 in this manner since new PS2 games are generally 20 bucks cheaper than PS3 games. Infact it probably DOES offset some loses on the PS3 to a certain degree and might even enable them o drop the price on the 80gb by Xmas./// Also THANK GOD There's an EDIT button for comments now!!
I've had my PS2 for years and PS3 for 6 months now. If Sony decides to price cut to $99 for the holidays, I'll go buy another PS2 just for future investment. Plus I seem to be buying way more PS2 games now than I did before.
old news
psn id: gingo... this is great news for the future of ps3 because if the majority of these ps2 owners buy ps3's then the ps3 will win this console war
KFLASH---- HAd Sony waited, they would have lost the BD war for sure. Its good tht they launched when they did. The sales may not be better than the Wii right now, but by the time the PS3 departs us, it will have sold more than the 360 and Wii combined. Both of those companies will be on to there next installments and will have abandoned there current consoles as usual. Slow and steady wins the race.
wtf lol holy crap more power to the lil gu?? =]
well its no wonder why the PS2 is still alive. its because the PS3 amazingly is the only one on the market, along with the PS2, EVER that has backwards compatibility. nobody is making xbox games anymore, nor is anybody making any gamecube games. because both nintendo and microsoft apperently find it to hard to be able to play games of the previous generation, so in my opinion, the PS3 has the best games and most games.
i haven't gotten to play shadow of collosus. i also agree, bioshock, resistance and gears are all kinda cookie cutter. nothing brilliant in a different way like god of war and SoC or okami, MGS3, RE4. all of those. Black, remember that game from criterion? that game was VERY graphically impressive, it could easily run with some 360 titles, which my theory is why it lacked multiplayer and had only 8 missions.
@ DAZ nah I understand that but after all the whining I have heard about the price that seems to be the only thing that Sony has against them
Lol, this is only because a lot of people are too broke to get the PS3. Trust me if the PS3 didn't coast that much then the PS2 and everything else would jus fade away slowly over time.
Good for Sony! Good for us!
The PS2 still freaking rules though now its sitting my garage on the wall of fame, i keep buying PS2 games and play them on my PS3 in HD, Wild Arms 5 just came out and its so freaking sweet i love this.
well thats good
