PlayStation 3 hits 6 million sales worldwide

We recently reported that Sony had sold 4.48 Million PlayStation 3's Worldwide, but this figure was in fact a little dated (being up until Q1 2007) and we are now almost in Q3. New information from the Australian Sony 'Experience More' event, held in Sydney, revealed by Sony puts the actual figures at approximately 6 million units sold.

Down under the PlayStation has sold 64,000 units and Sony Computer Entertainment MD Michael Ephraim explained to the audience that “on a slow week, the PS3 was selling around 2,500 units - putting it ahead of all other direct console competitors in the market.”

In related news according to Carl Rose, the Managing Director of Sony Australia - Blu-ray is dominating the market in Australia, with roughly 80 percent of all HD content (excluding PS3 games) being sold on Blu-ray discs, rather than on HD DVD.

Right now, there are 107 Blu-ray titles on the market, and with adoption rates now reaching "a satisfactory level", Sony promises to double that number by Christmas. This comes in light of this morning's announcement that retail chain Target would only be stocking Blu-ray players and discs, rubbing a little more salt in the wound of the competing high definition format.

< --------------------the red ring of death skull says d'oh. Way 2 go Sony!!! You're not done you still have to crush the backstabbers who (back in 80's) backstabbed ya. We know who.... did you know what... to you know who... and that was truly truly messed up. I was a big fan of "them". Would've been nice to see a merger... i saw the console protype. "They" was the love of my life. But i had to grow up. Thank You for not going with "them"... you're doing good all by your lonesome. I didn't really like you @ 1st. You were trying to compete with "them. But i had to say so long like Mr. Rogers, only... i wasn't coming back. I'm down with you now. These numbers above is just the beginning. Doubters get left behind to just doubt. Show em what you got. Props to Morpheus and the PSU crew... keep up the good work. Thanks for ALL of your efforts... somebody should tell y'all.... might as well be me.

Anyone notice that it's been at 6,000,000 units worldwide since March 2007? Is that sold to consumers or retailers? To think that it be consumers and only announced now, you'd come to understand that it should be beyond 6m units sold worldwide now (late July 2007).

    • 4:31pm BST - July 28th, 2007

i think sony would be more accurate in counting on how many they sold how does vgacharts get there numbers?? and doesnt all three counsoles go by how many they shipped because its almost impossible and costly to find out how many have been sold cuz i know 360 says they shipped 11 million not sold

sorry, that is shipped units, no way could Sony have sold 4.7 mil, when the last month sales were at 3.4-3.5 mil, unless there is a larger market that we dont know of anywhere plus the price cut was only in the U.S, please let us reason instead of jumping on any rumor that favors the console of choice as if it was true

  35. arthur56k

    • 9:32am BST - July 30th, 2007

maybe sold to retailers, since they also look at NPD sales for each month, this site gets lame by the day

phil harrison said that they knew that the console wasnt selling that well, if the console is at 6 mil, is nintendo at 14 mil and MS at 17 mil, dont get me wrong, but Sony doesnt know how many consoles they sell, all they know is how much they sell to retailers, plus send me a link, i really want to know how they are managing to sell that much when the sales worldwide are laging behind, keep living in darkness if you want, ill live in reality, and dont give me that Sony says crap, theyve lied to me many times

funny how alot of ppl doubt sony....same thing happened with PS2 it started off a little slow then it sky rocket selling a nearly 20M the first  yr...the Wii has the upper hand right now BUT! it will soon go down regardless cuz the games are ALL repetitive and 360 already lost in its home land...ppl say nintendo is dominating sonys homeland but think bout it ppl nintendo IS FRM JP!! idiots seriously get ur facts right
