PlayStation 3 takes European lead

Discounting the Nintendo Wii as most gamers consider it to be a side-category in comparison to the next generation battle brewing between the XBOX 360 and PlayStation 3, Sony's console has officially taken the total sales lead across Europe. With today's PlayStation event taking place in London, SCEE boss David Reeves made a rather large announcement in regards to how well the PS3 is doing in Europe.
"I'm also delighted to announce today that we have sold over 5 million PlayStation 3's throughout Europe," Reeves said.
"We are particularly proud of this as it has been achieved in a similar time frame as PlayStation 2 which retailed, if you remember, at a significantly lower price."
Also mentioned at today's event was the fact that Sony has been outselling its largest competitor since October of 2007. On top of that, Reeves was glad to finally announce the sales lead change in Europe today as well.
"I am delighted to be able announce today that we have sold more PlayStation 3's throughout Europe than Xbox 360 - even though they launched sixteen months before PS3."
"These numbers are a testament to the strength of the PlayStation brand throughout our region, the ever-increasing number of titles being launched, the rich content on offer and its appeal to different demographics and cultures."
This is an incredible achievement considering the time frame difference between console launches. Sony has made up a lot of ground within those 16 months of time and looks forward to continually closing that gap over the worldwide sales charts as well.

Wow, now that's amazing. The advantage that the PS3 has is that it's sales are spread out across the globe. But on the other hand, over half of the Xbox 360's total hardware units sold have come from the United States alone.
And what's even more amazing about this news is that Microsoft dropped the price on the Xbox 360 in Europe back in March or April, but the PS3 is still outselling it!!!! I guess people are willing to pay more for a superior product instead of going cheap and getting a 360 instead. I really think that the Red Ring of Death hardware issues were a big factor as well. A lot of people don't really bring it up nowadays, but it's a fact. The gamers in Europe already know about the 360's hardware issues and if they are going to buy a reliable console, they are going to buy a PS3 and most likely, the majority of the PS2 owners are going to get PS3's, and there was over 40 million PS2's sold in Europe.
As soon as the PS3 gets another price drop, the sales will skyrocket, And I still think that it's possible for the PS3 to outsell the Xbox 360.

4 Million in US, 5 mill in EU and 2 mill in japan, right? They were supposed to hit their 11 mill back in march if I remember correctly. But they aren't doing to bad at all.

Wow! Thatt's truely impressive considering MGS4, Killzone, Haze, and God of War 3 are still on the way. Don't forget Home and Little Big Planet as well. PS3 is gainig ground faster than I thought it would. Come on North Amreica time to follow this trend.

I don't post much, but I have to chime in. First congrats sony. Second it was only a matter of time, next will be the world wide takeover because soon all xbox systems will fall to the RRoD!!!! Sony built a great console that people were not comfortable with the word is out know it is a durable machine with a great game line up(with more to come) so watch out xbox.

i think they are already trying to get wid of all the sixaxisis ....thy keep offering games with it or in some shops thy giv u an extra one at a really low price but i know PS3 is doing great in UK i pretty much convinced...around 20 of my m8s to get it as im like the only one in my year who knows the ps3 inside out :P

16 months and cheaper price points (regular and 'tard packs) and they're still overtaken. That's gotta hurt. In Japan there's nearly 4x as many PS3's sold. America is Microsoft's only true success and from Jan and Feb it looks like SCEA's close to blowing Microsoft away too.

Help me i think iv been hacked. i got abit heated with this guy on call of duty 4 and appologized later but now iv been added by him and some other guy and they will not talk to me back and now when i started my ps3 it gave me with out an option the ok button for "reconstructing" my hardrive/database now all my messages have dissapeared i am still online and its all working fine but i cannot connect to playstation store or any online games so far im realy realy worried about this.
