Sony Computer Entertainment New Zealand head of sales and marketing Warwick Light has divulged plans to release a digital tuner for PlayStation 3 at some point during early 2008.
Speaking to New Zealand-based website Stuff.co.nz, Light detailed plans to "transform the PS3 capabilities so as to meet people's changing entertainment needs”, revealing "We're also hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder.”
Given that Freeview launches in the region from next March, it’s conceivable the digital tuner could also arrive at around the same time; furthermore, many anticipate a formal announcement of the device to transpire at the upcoming Leipzig Games Convention later this month, though Sony remains tight-lipped on the matter.
Elsewhere, Light touched on the firm's plans for the future of the PlayStation brand, implying it may be another decade until the PS3's successor sees the light of day: "It could be anywhere between seven and 10 years before the next (Sony) console comes out, and to bridge that gap you need considerable technology", he said.
Stay tuned for more details as they break.

They's saying it's be an add-on. a digital tunner you plug intot he PS3 somewhere since the PS3 it'self cant receive broadcasts unless it's done via cable or broadband internet, even then though, it'd still need a FW update to access the device. Something like this was once rumored for the PS2 but when the Harddrive didn't get wide acceptance the idea kinda vanished.

DVR capability wow! thats amazing. Damned - I should not have purchased that cheap disk recorder all those years ago and instead waited & used my PS3 with this add-on. How many Hitachi 1TB drives does it come with? Ive ripped atleast 2.2TB worth of my movies and TV series and streaming it to my TV, but Im running out of space because like a fool I purchased only low capacity 250GB and 750GB hard drives - should have purchased the 1TB ones I know... :(

Sony! Along with DVR, please make it to where i can burn movies to my hardrive also. U would really be on M$'s $hit list then. I bet u would sell 1 million or more PS3's in one week if u did that!
