Play.com, a popular online retailer in the UK, has recently posted a price and date for Sony's upcoming PlayStation 3 digital video recorder (DVR) add-on, PlayTV.

PlayTV is essentially a box that connects Freeview to your PlayStation 3, allowing live TV to stream and display through your console and giving you the option to record your favorite shows to your PS3 hard drive. Once on your PS3, you'll be able to use your PSP to transfer files or use "Remote Play" to watch shows away from home.

The unit will feature tuners for high definition support, which utilizes the European Digital Video Broadcasting system. Also the box will include a seven day scheduling system so that you can set to record your favorite shows ahead of time.

According to Play.com, PlayTV is priced at £99.99 ($199 USD), and is set to release March 28th, 2008. As of now, there is no word on when this system will come stateside, so stay tuned for more information.

That seems a little expensive... I'd gladly pay $100, but not $200.

Sky are providing the content for Play TV (as far as i know) thats why it's only available in the UK just now.  Having said that I ain't gonna fork our £100 for a Play TV box when I have Sky+ already...pointless much?

This is a little high priced. It would be totally worth it if it has a cable card slot but im pretty sure it wont.  Plus you would HAVE to upgrade your hdd which isnt too much but it all adds up.

Not sure how good of an idea this is. Alot of people already own Tivo's or DVR's. Sony should definitely look into the numbers before releasing this in the US.

so if you already had sky could you use this without charge. after paying for the box and then would it be HD if going through a HD tv  if so i would buy it. sky HD boxs cost about £200 so it would be worth it

Too much money. I would pay $100 but not $200. Could someone in the UK register my PSP on their PS3 so i can stream from the US. I doubt the price will change for over here. PSX all over again.

Sounds good and all but if Sony can't fix the lag issues between Remote Play, there's no point.  Plus the cost of a bigger hard drive would most likely have to be factored in.  I've had my 60GB PS3 since March and only have 15GBs left.

This is such an awesome feature! May I guess you can also record your A/V channel? It's just the damn price that keeps me away from stuff like this! It also keeps me away from most games :(

    • 5:35pm GMT - December 29th, 2007

How hard is this to understand?

Play TV content is being provided by Sky.  Sky only hold the rights to broadcast their programming in the UK and ROI.  Therefore Play TV is only available in the UK and ROI.  Sony have confirmed this.  It may eventually be released in the US but before that can happen a provider for the content will need to be sourced.

    Don't hold your breath people...

PlayTV isn't coming out on March 28th 2008.

Play.com shows 28th March as preliminary release date for Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo 5, Resident Evil 5 and more, because they arent sure of a final date. The same with PlayTV.

Anyway, £100 is definately more than its worth for me!

OMG ARE YOU GUYS  SERIOUS! STOP WHIINING ABOUT 200$ DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH A HD CABLE BOX OR SATALITE RECEIVER WITH DIGITAL RECORD COSTS!!! LIKE 800$ UP HERE IN CANADA THIS THING IS A STEAL AT 200$ AND TO BE ABLE TO LINK TO THE PSP EVERYONE SHOULD RUN OUT AND BUY THIS ASAP

  31. moveteam

    • 1:21pm GMT - December 30th, 2007

    @Hububla: Yes I think you're right: A PS3 costs £299 + £100 for PlayTV + £70 for a 250GB 2,5" HD = £469. You get a Blu-ray player, game console, DVB-T recording with double HD tuners.

Actually you've to pay about £250 for a DVD recorder with ONE SD tuner, £220 for a Blu-ray player = £470.

I'll buy it when it comes to Denmark!!!

Its just a freeview tuner and recorder you can pick them up in the shops it has nothing to do with sky.
