Quake Wars dev: PS3 is a "challenge"

In an excerpt from a yet-to-be published interview with Edge-Online, Splash Damage founder and Creative Director Paul Wedgwood has dropped a few interesting remarks on the competing claims of console and PC development.

Wedgwood drummed out the much-repeated line about the PlayStation 3 being tougher to develop for. "Coming from the background of a PC game developer, obviously the Xbox 360 is easier," he said. "If anything, the 360 is even easier than the PC because we don’t have to optimize the hardware parts for Intel, AMD, ATI and Nvidia."

"We just have this one platform and if it runs well, it runs well the next time you boot it, irrespective of which 360 you’re running it on. PS3, it’s more of a challenge."

To compensate for this, Splash Damage has apparently led development of its latest multiplatform projects on PS3, though Wedgwood commented that details of format support were still far from settled.

"Because we haven’t decided exactly which platforms our latest game is going to be on," he explained. "We took a pretty loose attitude towards development at the start of the year, and just said ”let’s have fun trying out development stuff." We knew that the PS3 would be more of a challenge, so that’s the one we got going with."

Wedgwood thinks console gamers are still crying out for the depth that only PC games can provide. "Arguably, and this is not to dismiss what people have achieved in the past, but Halo 3 multiplayer is really Quake 3 from 1999," he declared. "Even Call of Duty 4 is just Counter-Strike on the PC from 2001."

"So there’s an amazing amount of depth that could be present on consoles, but it isn’t there because real-time strategy games have never been successful on consoles, deep first-person shooters have never been on the consoles, and so on."

All of which does not, apparently, mean that Wedgwood thinks console gamers are thick. "I hate the notion that “softcore” people are stupid. What a ridiculous thing to say, that because someone has a console controller in their hand, they’re somehow less intelligent than a PC player. That really frustrates me."

Exactly.  Halo 3 MP is basically Quake 3.  You get the same Rocket Launcher Bunny Hopping idiots on there as you do Halo..

well why was the console version of Quake Wars so rubbish? If your games from PC are so much further ahead than COD4, then release a good one and prove it.

I like how they just thought lets just have fun and try some development things out. This could help bring some much needed change to the fps or tps genre. Everything lately, excluding the new games cuz i havent had a chance to play them yet, seem the same but with minor changes.

I guess you suck at Rockets then LOL. Anyways, it will interesting to see how the PC evolves from this point out from a gaming stand point.

duh r-tards, if you was working on the 360 for so long the ps3 would seem like rocket science.

PC-centric developer finds least PC-like console harder to develop for. Yes we've heard it before and it's not getting any more interesting with each new story. You could have cut that crap, given a headline about one of the more interesting bits.

psn id: gingo... its a good sign that they started development on the ps3 because if they do decide to release this for 360 and ps3 at least a good job will be made of it

I think if more developers included mouse and keyboard support for the consoles...just like unreal tournament, then it gives consolers much more freedom and flexibility to play how they want---and can make for a more immersive experience for first person shooters---it's also more likely to grab some former 'ALL-PCers' to possibly pick up a console as well--just like me =)

I personally prefer to hold a controller in my hand then play with a mouse and keyboard.

quake wars? Omg I had to check the dates because I was playing this one pc like many moons ago. This is not surprising at all we know how the ps3 cell tech is different from standard ole pc tech, get on the new boat devs and lets make something new already.

Exactly the ignorant response I would expect from a game dev whos game sucks.  COD4 is still a runaway hit, its nothing like CS, and Halo 3...ill give him that one...

so basically they think gaming is about which console is easier to develop for, there in it for the wrong reasons if thats the case.gaming should be about not all the time but mostly pushing the limits of what u can do n making an amazing game.stop bumming the360 which is old and just a xbox without a hdd and stick to high end pc n ps3 development  use the full power of the ps3,u would save money ditching 360 development.

i disagree this may have been true before but now consoles are definitely edging out pc's IMO and i do play on pc, because you have unified system for all of your friends you don't have to worry about different hardware affecting game performance and because theres one whole unified flexible system like the psn, games like resistance 2 are able to give huge community features, PC gaming is going extinct the hardware is becoming too expensive, and it's being edged out by consles in pretty much everway, consoles are cheaper, safer (no pirating, virus' etc), easier to work on (1 hardware configuration for devs and a unified multiplayer system for gamers), and the gaming experience on consoles is equal to or better than pc, when the last time you saw something like resistance 2 or killzone 2 on a pc?

LMAP. Typical troubles of PC dev turned console devs (which explains the prefrences and trash talking) except these devs are using PS3 as lead.  Humerous.

Again. for western devs it is always about easy and the money returned. A challange or a unique problem drives ire from them. I wonder how many devs are going to fall in line or just choose the easy path and continue deliviring poor ports for the PS3?

PC gaming fails, things do look a tad snappier but that's not a good enough reason to forsake my couch and big screen for a monitor and desk.

"but Halo 3 multiplayer is really Quake 3 from 1999 - Even Call of Duty 4 is just Counter-Strike on the PC from 2001"

FINIALLY! Someone has said it! Bahh, so sick of tars claiming halo and cod are the pinaciles of multiplayer gaming. I didn't really make the exact connection this guy did but I know and feel that the multiplayer in both games is nothing new at all.

In regards to the 360 easier than a PC - makes total sense, as it's basically a PC dedicated to gaming AND with one hardware spec you don't need to incorporate code for varrying systems with diff processors, vid cards, amounts of ram etc. That said - if you go 360 only - because of that then you are one lazy developer.

Lastly - I heard quake wars was meh to bad depending on who you ask.

It's common knowledge that the PS3 is hard to develop for, but once you know how, the results are fantastic. Look at Naughty Dog and Insomniac.
