New information regarding Capcom’s forthcoming Survival Horror sequel, Resident Evil 5, has surfaced in a recent preview of UK publication Xbox World 360.
According to the magazine, the game takes place in an isolated African country situated near a line of active volcanoes stretching regions including Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
The virus that has contaminated the village population seen in the trailer for the game is allegedly released due to this volcanic activity, though it remains unknown as to what type of virus it actually is.
In terms of characters, the publication confirms the appearance of series antagonist, Albert Wesker, in addition to the long-rumoured return of Sherry Birkin. Long time fans will recognise Wesker from his role in the original game and subsequent appearances thereafter, with Birkin having previously appeared as a 12 year-old girl in Resident Evil 2.
Furthermore, the preview also sheds some light on the second female character shown in Famitsu magazine last week, confirming that players will in fact be able to control her in a drop-in co-op system similar to Army of Two, should you be playing online. Offline, the mysterious heroine will be controlled by the AI.
The Mercenaries mode – previously seen in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Resident Evil 4 – will also make a return, but this time the developers have implemented a few new gameplay mechanics, including a cover system and the ability to dodge/duck attacks.
Finally, and perhaps most interestingly, is the confirmation of playable flashbacks to flesh out the game’s story more effectively. While it remains unknown what sections we'll be able to experience, we’re personally hoping for a playable portion of the Spencer Mansion from the original game, as well as parts of Raccoon City from RE2 and 3.
A new trailer for the game will debut on May 31 – stay tuned for further coverage.

co-op would be nice, but you know what they should add? RE Survival Mode! you and a handful of online players go up against zombie Ai and the last one still standing is the victor! also when you die you become one of the zombies, thus trying to eliminate the rest of your competition! NOW THAT is what they need to add =)
