Reeves expects few PS3-platform exclusives

In the final stretch of our 24-hour David Reeves quote marathon, the Sony Europe boss extols the virtues of developer exclusivity over publisher exclusivity - a dying occurrence within a heavily-contested videogame market.
“I think we have to accept that exclusivity is not a thing of the past, but it is probably with publishers,” he stated. “We might do a few things, where we feel that we need a push here or a push there.”
“We have to accept more and more that platform holders themselves cannot have exclusives unless they’re given millions and millions of dollars not to develop a particular game for one particular platform." Or millions of dollars for some exclusive DLC perhaps?
“But for developers, and you could take someone like Quantic Dream for example - a great game, it takes a lot of time to develop," he continued. "They need a little bit of funding, external development. In exchange, it’s exclusive - that works. So exclusivity possibly with developers is more likely that exclusivity with publishers.”
Hopefully Sony will continue to fund high-quality and innovative first or second-party exclusive IPs from here on in - it seems the only way to tie a franchise to any platform these days.

zarajoe you make no sense.
A developer will not take advantage of PS3 hardware if there game is multiplatform. Only exclusives do that.

I prefer Sony's approach better, becuz since you're funding the devs,it means that they would get a soft spot for your platform,as it would be their launching platform.Which of course means more and better games from the same devs.

...and I'm fin with that. Sony's 1st party IP's are large, technically sound, and varied (From Uncharted to Gran Turismo to MLB The Show). I saw this coming 4ever ago. If 3rd parties are going to go multiplat from now on, then it's all about who does the most IN HOUSE. That's Sony and Nintendo.

One of Reeves better statements. I agree completely on what he's saying. To support talented developer studios is the future path to acquiring exclusives. And Sony has done a wonderful job in that respect. Insomniac, Media Molecule and now Quantic Dream - all of them programming some of the best / most innovative titles of 2008/2009 (Resistance 2/R&CFuture 2, Little Big Planet and Heavy Rain).

I love that so many of you still care about trophies, It just makes me laugh. My only complaint with games being multiplatform is that usually one of the 2 sucks. 360 ports to ps3 are not even worth rentals.

Finally after days of mundane PR bull form this guy, Reeves has finally said something that makes sense. We are starting to see the PS3 flex it's muscle and Sony are backing it all the way. That's what we were told a while back but better to see it now.
Funnily enough exclusive rumours from Rockstar surface just hours after this statement so he's probably behind the times

@21 no it didnt take em 2 years to figure it out. he's just answering the question that was posed to him. Sony have always backed financially what they think are or are going to be top notch games. he is just stating that fact!!

Honestly though, if Sony are wanting more third party support. There going to have to pay up.
