Resident Evil 5 dev: PS3 is not hard to develop for

Resident Evil 5 Producer Masachika Kawata has questioned the idea that developing a PlayStation 3 version of a multiplatform game is significantly harder than developing one for Xbox 360.
"I can't really say that one platform is proving more problematic than the other," he told Kikizo in an interview.
Kawata subsequently qualified his comment, acknowledging that similarities between the Xbox 360 hardware and the PC, Resident Evil 5's lead development platform, made work on the former system comparatively straightforward. "This game is being developed in Capcom internally on PC hardware. When it comes to porting directly from PC-based hardware, the console that's easier to work with is, naturally, the 360."
But he insisted that PS3 was far from the programming nightmare some commentators have styled it. "The PS3 is often said to be more difficult. As someone developing for it, though... I haven't found it to be too tough."
This may, however, have more to do with the flexibility of Resident Evil 5's engine than the nature of the platform. "With our proprietary engine, the MT Framework - it's an engine we specifically made for development on next-gen consoles - one of its particular strengths is ease of porting to different platforms."
Resident Evil 5 is down for release on 5th March 2009 in Japan, and 13th March 2009 in North America and Europe

I realise now that with all the fast gameplay, technical elements & breath taking graphics, Capcom surly knows how to program to teh up most.
Kojima Production is full of lazy programmers, "uh... my programmers say the ps3 doesn't provide enough..."

Actually, the point he made was "This may, however, have more to do with the flexibility of Resident Evil 5's engine than the nature of the platform. "With our proprietary engine..."
It costs a lot to develope your own engine, if capcom has the money for this, then great, but not all developers can afford to build their own engine. That means they license an existing engine for less money. If that engine is harder to work with on the PS3 then that is a problem for that studio and PS3 in general. The point is if you don't have a lot of money, it could be hard to port your game on the PS3 and thats not great news.

Well actually What Kojima's complaint about the PS3 was that his vision of MGS4 was even more ambitious than even the PS3 could handle. That's why he was saying that Blu Ray was still to small for what he wanted on top of wanting to make even larger and more expansive levels.

And that doesn't shake anyone to tears. You see most of the devs that have complained were housed by big pubs who have the money and have a reason to create thier own flexible engine.
And quite frankly the best games on the PS3 are exclusive. The difficulty in porting may not be a bad thing.
But how many devs does this make? There are an army of devs that have said the same thing. I was once told that only devs who depend on sony for their livelyhood said that.

So, it IS a port. Thanks for pointing that out. Pass. And has everyone forgotten lost planet? You lot sure are singing a heII of a different tune than before. Sheep.
@16 - That's exactly what it is: a port. It would not be if development had existed in tandem. "They said it's being developed on a PC platform then made to run on X360 and PS3 hardware" . FYI - that's a good definition of port, in case you didn't know. Sorry you didn't.

Hmm, I remember just months ago half of you were bantering on, calling them crapcom. Kinda sad how the tides shift so quickly. Oh well, I always liked capcom games, and this is good news.
