Resident Evil 6 will be ‘totally different,’ says Capcom

Capcom’s reiterated that Resident Evil 6 will completely overhaul the long-running horror franchise when it eventually shambles into the light of day.

That’s according to producer Masachika Kawata, who told the folks at MarcaPlayer (via Rely on Horror) that the next core entry in the series will be a “totally different” beast to previous iterations.

“The series will see a complete renovation with the next entry on every level,” said Kawata-san.

“But we can’t forget about all the previous entries that have led to the creation of many possibilities for the franchise. I can’t say if we’re going to make [Resident Evil 6] survival horror or a shooter, but I can say that it’ll be totally different.”

Resident Evil debuted on PlayStation back in 1996 and quickly gave a shot in the arm to the then-lagging survival horror genre established by Sweet Home and Alone in the Dark, spawning numerous sequels over the years.

However, by 2005’s Resident Evil 4, the series had adopted a more action-orientated template, ditching the traditional pre-rendered backdrops and implementing an over-the-shoulder perspective. It also elbowed zombies out of the equation in favour of parasite-infected villagers and chainsaw-wielding nutters.

PSU recently celebrated the series’ 15th anniversary in a series of dedicated features – check them out here.
