Rockstar: PS3 architecture a factor in GTA IV delay

Jeronimo Barrera, the Vice President of Product Development for Rockstar Games, has conceded that the team’s efforts to familiarise themselves with the PlayStation 3’s architecture was a factor in delaying the game from its original October release.
Speaking to MTV, Barrera commented, "It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to that.”
"We wanted the time, and I think we made the right choice. It was very difficult to make the choice because everybody wanted it. But we thought, you know, what with that extra bit of time, it's just going to be that much better and there will be more systems out.”
Despite this, Barrera asserted that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game are up and running “identical” to each other.
“Now, we're neck and neck. That's not an issue anymore. But back then that was something we were taking into account. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the PS3 version. It's awesome. They're both identical”, he said.
Grand Theft Auto IV is due out simultaneously on PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 29.

Funny thing - I read this on some other sites yesterday and they happened to omit the part about "We wanted the time, and I think we made the right choice. It was very difficult to make the choice because everybody wanted it. But we thought, you know, what with that extra bit of time, it's just going to be that much better and there will be more systems out.”
Now why would they do that?? Hmmmmmmm......yeah I wonder! Why, so they could report it as if it was some problem with designing for the PS3 rather than just Rockstar themselves wanting to take the time to make all versions the best possible!
Damn, I love unbiased journalism!! Hahahahahah

Where in that quote does it mention architecture? That quote makes it seem as if they mainly were looking for a higher installed base.

I get the feeling they got the hang of developing on ps3 and decided to use the ps3 as the base platform late on and then port it to xbox360, i dont think the 360 is powerful enough for them to be 'identical' if used as the base platform!

.........and this is coming from the same people that said "PS3 - DEVLEPERS STRUGGGLE, NO LONGER A PROBLEM" what is going on here? im a die hard playstation 3 fan but this is really getting annoying by the fanboys... such as "bnolan56" ---------"its not as fun and exciting now that its a multi-lat, " that really is pathetic. That has nothign to do with anything how good the game is.

@ohshutyourmouth,
I think your just seeing over lap. Its been well known that Pre launch PS3 sdk's where hard to get. So you have rockstar which most likely started dev'ing as soon as the box hit the streets. Sony has taken actions to correct these dev'ing issues but those don't happen over night. SO your seeing new game development say "Ehh its easy!" and the older ones saying "ehh, we had issues".... and then you just have some "cough" ea "cough" that are just lazy bastards and refuse to learn a new trick.

I don't buy this crap any more. With relatively small devs (e.g. Naughty Dog) churning out great products, and with other larger devs (e.g. Infinity Ward) saying they've had no problem with it, I now take all comments such as these as a sign that the devs making them are incompetent.
If the PS3 alone was such a problem, they could still have released the 360 version in October and made us wait. At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I wouldn't be at all surprised if these comments are part of the $50 million deal with MS.
That said, I loved GTA3 and Vice City, but San Andreas was a let-down. I'm only 50-50 with GTA IV, and am looking forward to other titles far more... like Mercs 2.

Ha! I knew it was partially an issue with install base. And they admit it.

I thought SA was the best one. I don't think it mattered if it came out in october as I probably wouldn't have it yet. There is many games I'm playing and just wouldn't have the time for it. I probably still won't get it till summer if not the end of the year.

YEah this sucks, I mean I am buying the 360 version for the DLC, but thats it. I am more than sure the PS3 will get the DLC on a special edition disc later this year or next year. But, as a PS3 owner as well, things like this upset me because this is gonna set the internet on fire with fanboyism. We dont need it, this quote was unnecessary.

@ IONIXX: that 50million dollars Microsoft gave rockstar is the reason why the xbox 360 is getting the extra content.

@IONIXX: It's because Microsoft gets what they want with money. All they ever god d*mn do is buy what they need from companies so they can do better in the long run. And this developing for PS3 being hard stuff from developers is total f***ing bull sh1t. Epic didn't have a hard time making Unreal Tournament 3 for PS3, while they don't even know if the 360 version is coming out. Square Enix isn't having problems making games for PS3. The reason devs keep saying stuff happens because of difficulties with the PS3 is because they're sucking up to M$, hoping to get money for it. They're really all just piece of sh1t people who don't like that the PS3 requires actual developing skill, unlike 360 where they can just put together simple games on little DVD's. They're all just lazy and don't like actually having to really work to get money. They suck and I don't plan on getting games from any more companies that say PS3 is hard to develop for, because the REAL companies are doing it as we speak.

Why do they have to be identical? Can’t one be better than the other? If you ask me it sound like someone got paid to leak this type of information, because information like this is really not necessary unless you are trying to create bad press -

I see good news here!! Rockstar doesn't release crappy games, them "taking the time" to understand the Cell's structure will insure their PS3 exclusives will be the best games on the market. I don't even care about GTA anymore, it's the same crap every game... getting real old. I'm really excited to hear more stuff about L.A. Noire!!!

Back then,if i remember correctly,Sony was still to release their new SDKs and what not,so obviously ps3 had a part in the delay, but wasn't the 360 version full of pop ins, hiccups, and all that stuff too?The thing is such a monumental game needed those extra 6 months, otherwise R* reputation was at stake. And why is everybody hatin' on R* those are one of the most talented devs the industry has ever seen,MTV asked the question,R* just explained why it was delayed, there's no denying the fact that SONY was lazy with the SDKs,so OBVIOUSLY getting the hang of the new hardware would be difficult, since you hardly have the right tools.
