Today Sony Computer Entertainment America celebrates the seventh anniversary of the launch of its PlayStation 2 videogames console in North America.

The PS2 first launched across the US on October 26, 2000 and has since gone on to accumulate worldwide sales of over 120 million units – making it the most successful videogames console ever released.

Furthermore, the console smashed all previous records for the fastest games console to reach the 100-million shipment mark, achieving the number in just five years and nine months after its release. In contrast, the original PlayStation took nine years and six months to reach the same number.

Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing and PlayStation Network commented, "Never before has an in-home game system experienced this type of worldwide success on such a long-lasting scale.”

"PlayStation 2 is a perfect example of our ten year product lifecycle promise and is a testament to the design and technology that continues to be at the core of the product. While today's anniversary celebrates PlayStation 2' past, we’re very excited for its future."

SCEA has pledged that it aims to continue supporting the machine ten years into its life cycle, with 160 new titles due for release in the US between Christmas and March 2008. PS2’s library of games currently stands at over 1,400.

The best-selling PS2 games worldwide as of 2007 are as follows:

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (Rockstar) (13 million)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
(Rockstar) (12 million)
Grand Theft Auto III
(Rockstar) (11 million)
