If you’ve grown tired of using a Japanese account for its adhocParty for the PSP, Sony will soon have a solution for you. Sony Computer Entertainment America announced today that the online service, ‘acdhocParty for the PSP system,’ is coming to North America later this month. The service, launched in Japan last year, allows PSP owners to play select online games featuring Ad Hoc mode over the Internet via the PlayStation 3.

Traditionally, Ad Hoc mode meant you had to be in close proximately to your fellow gamer, but with ‘adhocParty,’ PSP owners with a PS3 can play together on the PlayStation Network.

“The PlayStation brand is synonymous with creating exciting new gameplay experiences that connect and challenge people in ways they never thought possible,” said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president, product marketing, SCEA. “AdhocParty for the PSP system creates an avenue for gamers to connect, strategize, and compete with each other – Gran Turismo is a great example of this. Polyphony Digital developed robust Ad Hoc features within the game, which are now even more accessible through adhocParty. We saw this as a tremendous opportunity to enhance the PSP system’s online gaming experience and bring the service to our North American consumers.”

Games like Gran Turismo and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite will soon have access to this new social gaming service.

“The secret to Monster Hunter’s fantastic success on PSP around the world has been the social aspect of the game, which brings together players from all walks of life,” said Mark Beaumont, chief operating officer, North America and Europe, Capcom. “AdhocParty for the PSP system will connect gamers to the content they love as well as to those who share the same passion for gaming. At last, Monster Hunter fans will be able to adventure together, regardless of where they are in North America.”

I think this only works if your PS3 is hooked up online through an ethernet cable (not wifi). If that is the case many of us will not be able to enjoy this feature.

    Can anyone confirm this?

PS: Maybe since the PSP go supports blue tooth, it may work with that.

@8 Hence my comment, it's only for wired connections, eg ethernet cable from ps3 to router.

PSP96: At least EU can dl from the NA PSN and get the English version this time around. So not everything is a loss for EU users ;).

Regarding AdhocParty itself... not much use to me since I connect my PS3 with a Wireless, not Wired connection...

They most likely can't change that functionality for technical reasons (otherwise they would've already done it, duh!).
