SCEA's Jack Tretton 3rd party support, PS3 and more

Posted on December 18th, 2007 at 04:26 EDT

Working with Sony for 13 years, primarily as the company’s Sales Director, Jack Tretton finds himself as the President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America.

As the sales director for Sony, Tretton saw himself engulfed with the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 brands, which both saw tremendous dominance in the industry. As the CEO and President, he now finds himself dealt with tremendous pressure in which he must bring the PlayStation 3 and PSP to the top of their perspective markets.

In an interview with, Tretton discussed a number of topics such as his earlier days in the business; to his most anticipated PS3 title, which he revealed was Gran Turismo 5. What really stood out were his comments about 3rd party support and the PS3’s presence in 2008.

When asked about 3rd Party support for the PS3, Tretton responded most proud manner with:

“We hear better and better things from the third party publishers every day. We are meeting with them on a regular basis and are getting a lot of feedback from them in terms of their needs. We are now starting to see developers creating games on PS3 and then porting them to other platforms such as EA's Burnout.”

“Developers are telling us that they are starting to create their games on PS3 first and take advantage of the hardware capabilities and then port down to other platforms so we are seeing tremendous progress from the third party community in terms of what they are able to do with our development kits. You will see some very nice things in 2008 coming from our third party partners in addition to what you will see this holiday.”

As for what will make people want a PS3 in 2008, Tretton ended by saying:

“People want and need the PS3 when they truly understand PS3's capabilities. If you get a controller in your hand, you start to play a game that takes advantage of PS3 technology, then you get online to download some cool content that compliments something that you're playing or introduces you to some games that you haven't seen before, then you start interacting with the multimedia capabilities of the machine and see how easy it is to download video and music and pictures.”

“Lastly, you pop a Blu-Ray movie into PS3 and then you realize that you have an extremely powerful machine that can meet the vast majority of your entertainment needs. If you want the most technologically advanced gaming system that will stand the test of time for the next ten years and comes with a free online gaming service, then the PS3 is a perfect choice.”

The general question is how many developers are willing to develop first for PS3 then port there games to the 360. Its been the other way around thus far. Not only that, in order to regain both consumer and developer confidence back, Sony has to release there major AAA titles and of course the elusive Home.

Blu-ray thus far is fine, however I continually stress the need for them to begin the transition of applying season and movie trilogy sets onto Blu-ray in order to capture the remaining market and also lower the price to compete with this of DVD.

right on man... alot of ppl underestimate the power that the PS3 holds and swear that the 360 is better because most titles look better on it... if only they really knew... wait till 4D comes into perspective, we'll see where the 360 stands... lol... oh yeah baby....

Erm sorry 4D, what are you lot on about? The 4th dimesion is time you dimmocks!!! Therefore I humbly submit that every game EVER has had an element of the 4th dimension in it because they all take time. However if you're going on about the emulation of a living breathing world that changes with time then the closest we've come to that in Oblivion but even that game in reality is a series of static routines. The amount of hyperbole pumped out not only by the games companies themselves but the fan boys is amazing!!! Motorstorms crashes are 4D... hilarious.

bluesuedeshoe is right...... 4D IS TIME and it hasnt been implemented on any game as of yet maybe we just might be seeing it on GTAIV or FFXIII/FFVersusXIII. This could interesting to if the PS3 can pull this off. Developers just needs time.

Agree with gingo about eventually using the PS3 as the lead platform, but when developers start to use more of it it will eventually leave 360 behind (remeber it's capabel of more)

There are two matters as far as Sony is concerned that they need to focus on. The delays, although mostly the responsibility of the third party developers need to stop. If there were any way for Sony to step in and block release date anouncements until they are confirmed definite on the inside, that would break the trend that has been hurting sales.

Next, much work needs to be to get PS3 exclusive content for multi platform games. For example, Cratos in Soul Calibur 4 for PS3. Things like that. Keep that going and advertise the heck out of it.

In terms of multimedia features thats ever epxanding, yeah pretty much the PS3 takes the cake for it. Developer confidence in there IP's (whether new or old) is really important. If this becomes solidified by Sony selling close to there target mark of 10-11 million units then yes don't be surprised to see porting's of multiplate games start with PS3 and end with the 360 or Wii.
