Screenshots coming to firmware 2.5?

An unnamed development source has kick-started fresh rumours on what to expect from the inevitable firmware 2.5, in light of precious few details emerging directly from Sony.

The one persistent rumour is the inclusion of a screen grab facility, which would potentially allow PS3 owners to capture images directly from games and use them as they please.

It's not hard to imagine a 'save to theme' option or the ability to store captured screens on the hard drive, but who knows what surprises they have in store.

No specific details were given on the exact functionality or usability, but it sounds like a neat idea to us.

Sounds nice, but it would really cool if we could record in-game videos. It would be pretty hard to capture a perfect shot while in the middle of a game.

psn id: gingo... this would be a good feature but the need to sort out the lag on in game xmb as it can get really annoying sometimes when writing messages

Sounds cool, but I'd like to see an update where sony focused on improved performance.  you know faster startup times, smoother ingame xmb, being able to actually use the xmb in game and not have to leave the game to do even the simplest things (eg. view network information) and optimise the game to use less resources as this would free up more ram that game developers could then use.

Nice. Not a feature that I was especially missing, but I will absolutely use it once it arrives.

This is cool and who knows with it being a rumor and all.  However, I would imagine that most developers would love Sony to focus on reducing the memory footprint required by the OS.  I believe the OS currently requires a sizeable chunk of memory and "if" Sony could reduce that amount and let the game developers have more that would be great.

Oh and they need PS2 software emulation built in...  so there goes any gains made in memory.  :-)

Yeah, I hope they make a video playlist, or ability to make your own folders.. Screenshots is kinda retarded, who really needs that? Actually NVM this will be good for socom, when you need to capture the final score :)

    • 1:50pm BST - August 26th, 2008

Awesome!  I was thinking about this the other day.  I think this could really help push PS3 sales if people could take screen shots and post on the web saying, "Look at what I just did on my PS3".  In game videos, like in Pixel Junk Eden, would be great too.  If they made it where you could upload your pics from your PS3 to something like Photobucket, like Eden allows you to upload videos to YouTube, that would be sweet.  However, I wish they would get more game companies on board on the in game music bandwagon.  I only have 2 games I can play music that is stored on my PS3.  Where are the updates for these older games?  I don't know why they don't just forget about the game companies having to update their games and just make it where the PS3 can play music anytime you want.  I would also like to be able to start a voice chat with my friends on there anytime I want, even in the middle of a game.  It would be a lot easier than typing messages.  I wish you could log on to TeamSpeak servers on your PS3, or have something like it on there besides that crappy chat room thing.  Yeah, the browser could use some work too.  Sony needs to make a deal with Firefox for a browser :)

I'm sorry but this rumor fails at life. Screenshots are already available, but it has to be in the game by the developers. It was included in the firmware before the new store design.

Resistance has this feature (use the printscreen key on a keyboard), and that free Japanese game with the cat has this also (this game was also the first to use youtube uploading, and the first to have the in-game friends list).

thats awsome i always wanted to be able to take screenshots, one of the small things that would make ps3 so much cooler. when mgs4 had the camera i played a single playthrough JUST getting cool shots,

    hope its true.

Instant replay for any game would be cool ... the number of times I'm playing warhawk and turn to my mate and say "did you see that" and he's like "sorry dude I was looking the other way" man if I had a euro for every time that happened. Oh well screenshots sound good but like many here I want the browser sorted ... it's wubbish.  Also the in-game xmb doesn't have to be exactly like the xmb - they should have stripped it down coz half of it don't work anyway just takes ages to load.

@Phantasmn - No offense, but I am truly sick of hearing that excuse. We shouldnt have to rely on developers to incorporate these features into their games, when a lot of developers are already finding it hard enough to work with the PS3. If Sony goes ahead and throws it into a FW update, I think its absolutely necessary. Would you rather have a universal and recognizable way of doing things or one whos quality is dependent on the developer? Ill take the former, thank you. People were saying the same thing when people were wishing for custom soundtracks. All you heard was people retort with the idiotic line "Its up to the developers, they can already do it if they want" as if thats a valid argument for why Sony shouldnt work on getting it for all games. Of course not many games support it, but now, because Sony has shown its interest in it, more developers are going to include it, and well be able to use custom soundtrack in a universal and recognizable way. Every feature makes this machine that much more practical and valuable, so Ill take all I can get.

I love the idea of taking a screenshot & it being save to "Photo" & use it as you wish. I'll be all over that feature assuming it's true...

@38/fullz06..... Agreed, I must have custom soundtracks asap.

that would be awesome, they should try to work with youtube and get it officially integrated with xmb then implement a feature so you can take video clips, ala pixel junk eden. but still the in game screenshot feature would be more than enough

Nice if we can do it with videos why not screens. Very nice. Perhaps a direct load to Photobucket or another image website like the videos use with youtube

I'm hoping for an update to the in-game xmb. Like others, I was pumped over this feature but was sorely disappointed that you can't actually do anything unless you quit the game you're currently playing. Which TOTALLY defeats the purpose of even having an in-game xbm because you can't do a dambed thing but observe how cool it looks, and to wish upon a star it was actually functional. Make it useful for something other than just something to look at.

And fix the friggin' browser already! I swear I must be the only one to keep having to "run the plug-in" every time I view a different page.

XMB should of been available via the 2nd HDMI or did they rip that out - oops, what are you doing $ony.

Screen Grabs and Video Grabs should of been there at the start, its a decades old feature, so much for innovation once again. Did some overpaid Tw@t at $ony decide on this fantastic development or what ?
