SEGA has officially confirmed development of Sonic Unleashed following the appearance of several leaked images and video footage over the Internet in past weeks.

Due out on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Wii, the game will feature an amalgamation of classic 2D and 3D gameplay, and is currently scheduled for release in late 2008.

Gary Knight, Sega’s European Marketing Director, commented, “By combining rich and vibrant scenery with dynamic viewpoints Sonic Unleashed will provide an immersive 3D experience whilst keeping alive the 2D gameplay elements and fantastic worlds that Sonic fans know and love.”

“In addition to this classic Sonic gaming experience, when darkness sets in Sonic Unleashed players will be able to experience a completely new way to play as Sonic… making this his most exciting adventure yet!”

Knight’s comments allude to previous reports suggesting that players will be able to control Sonic in Werewolf form.

Stay tuned for more information as soon as it breaks.

well, if they stick to 2D gameplay it might be good; I personally only liked Sonic 1 (the original genesis title) all others seemed cheap and way off for some reason.  I hope this is as good as the original.

I'd like to point out that its Mega Drive, Genesis is merely a gay american name for the system. Sonic 2 & 3 were also good games of their time !
