Sony and Nintendo sued over patent infringement

Sony seems to always be right smack dab in the middle of patent infringement lawsuits. After the famous Immersion lawsuit that caused Sony to remove rumble capabilities from their Dualshock 2 controllers, the company couldn’t have been any more embarrassed.

Enter, Copper Innovations Group. According to a patent filed in western Philadelphia in 1996, Copper had patented a device labeled as a, "Hand Held Computer Input Apparatus and Method." Copper is claiming that the Sixaxis and Blu-ray remote, along with the Nintendo Wii remote and nunchuck device is in direct violation of their patent and has filed a lawsuit against both companies over the matter.

The small group of innovators are seeking not only damages plus interest, but also legal fees and an injunction permanently prohibiting Sony (and Nintendo) from releasing products that infringe upon the patent.

Sony representatives have not commented on the situation. However, after Immersion won USD 100 million dollars from the last affair Sony went through, it’s no surprise that other companies are trying for a huge payday as well.

Lol. The description is about hand held thingys that can interact with a computer, AKA every single controller, keyboards, mice, etc in the world! (What picture?) And then they have to sue Sony and Nintendo, even years after they showed their stuff to the public!!! Besides, doesn't patent stuff expire after 10 years? Or is it 25?

How,can the Blu-ray remote be included the infringement? As far as i know it's just a blue-tooth remote. These days any company would try to make a quick buck by making false acquisitions on big companies, who'll undoubtedly kick their a55.

Too many of these small companies trying to sue console makers for a quick buck.  They can stand in line behind the 3 or 4 other [small, no name] companies that I've read articles on that are suing Sony for some form of infringment.

its not even a computer device.  the guy is just greedy and is to late to sue when these things have been out for a year now and  have been in development for longer.  He shouldve known.  Its like he just woke up or something.  Sony and Nintendo will win this.

It doesn't matter... Their product is for a computer... Not a Gaming console nor a blu-ray player! That is half the battle right there!

    Ach this is all nonsense.

I worse for a major hardware company. They're suing each other all the time. It's part and parcel of the job.

This seems like one of those times where some two-bit company buys up some vague tech-patent and tries to sue the big boys, hoping for a quick out-of-court settlement and a nice wee profit.

Nothing to worry about I do declare.

It seems these guys just don't have cash so they're hitting the big guys for it. Their device is for a computer; PS3 is a Blu-Ray Player/ Video Game System. I don't see how they can do this when their stuff is made mainly for computers.

the U.S goverment sucks, where else can you think  of something and get to sue someone if they made something close to it. like we all don't have any brains of our own, and we couldn't think of the same damm thing. you should have to make your product first, then if someone copies it , then you could sue. what a bunch of lazy greedy bastards in the USA.

I dont see why people get sued for thinking the same thing that some other person did just to make a quick buck. How does sony know that such a small company like that was going to produce something similar to what they already did. Thats crazy, they have to put it out first in order to sue and by the looks of things they didnt put out sh_t

i can't belive this, what is the matter with all these companies. I hope sony and nintendo win this case. I am sure for once sony and nintendo will have to put their heads together in order to combat this lawsuit, and hopefully this might be the begin of one of the greatest reunion in the history of video game; Sony and Nintendo releasing a one console together or maybe a game combining all nintendo characters and some prominent sony characters to symbolise their victory. I know, I know, thisis just a dream. lol
