Sony just opened a new front in its struggle to market the PlayStation 3 to demographics untapped by Xbox 360 and Wii. This time they're targeting the post-pub impulse-buy crowd.
According to Stuff.tv, the firm has got together with Universal Pictures to produce "PoP" vending machines which dispense PlayStation 3 games, Blu-ray discs and DVDs.
The new devices, which appear to be confined to the UK at present, will allow consumers to snap up the latest games, songs and films (150 of the latter will be available from launch) at any hour of the day or night. You'll also be able to download media straight to "most" MP3 or MP4 players, USB sticks and SD cards. The touchscreen interface lets you preview products before you lay down the moolah.
Stuff has posted a hands-on video for your delectation. No official release date has been announced, but PoPs will apparently be "popping up throughout the land in cinemas, gyms, universities and travel stations." Did you see what they did there?

These are just gonna end up getting stolen/hacked by Crime syndicates. Do these companies really think this is a good idea???

"targeting the post-pub impulse buy crowd"
Hmm... I don't see many of these being vandalised by the pissed-up yobs pouring out of the nightclubs at 3 in the morning...

I don't think I'll be carrying 40 pounds and all of a sudden want to buy something but it sounds like good idea.

Hmm.. this looks sorta interesting I'll have to wait and see what comes of this. This looks to be quite an advantage over other platforms in reaching potential consumers.

Seen this type of thing before here in Oz, although it was only DVD movies.
The machine was always out of order, but worked well initially.
If they iron out the bugs it'll be a hit for those non privy to P2P and a little PC knowledge. But alas it'll be just another rip off to the rest of us, priced exhorbitantly high for what some tosser seems to think is great value.
I have to ask at this point, why are Games and Movies at online stores ALWAYS more expensive than local shops.....shouldnt they be cheaper?, they USED to be !
