Sony delivers in Japan after weeks of disappointment

It has been a rough month for our beloved black console on its home turf. Analysts and gamers alike sat idly by and watched both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii continuously outsell PlayStation 3 week in and week out. Finally, after five weeks of pure disappointment and rock bottom sales, Sony has climbed out of the cellar with the release of LittleBigPlanet.
With weekly sales as low as 5,000 units per week, it started to feel as though the tide was finally turning in Japan. However, in just one week, Sony has almost fully regained the sales differential with Microsoft over the last five weeks by outselling their competitor six to one. We've included the numbers below.
DSi - 171,000
PSP - 50,000
PS3 - 36,000
Wii - 25,000
DSL - 17,000
PS2 - 6,800
360 - 6,300
The PSP continues to show strong numbers, but the new release of Nintendo's latest handheld modification put the rest of the field to shame. We're hoping this positive change in sales trends continues for Sony. We'll be sure to let you know how next week pans out when those numbers are released.

You still don't understand. The previous weeks of "disappointment" were because gamers were waiting for the better 80GB PS3 deal.

Well its looking good for sony. I wonder if the japanese still like Naruto cause if so Ultimate ninja storm seems to be right up there alley. Its much better than Broken bond, trust me I've played both. and of course WKC will help sales too

I told people in the forum, the main reason PS3 sales dropped was because:
-MS released a brand new SKU for 360, with larger HDD, for a MUCH lower price than a 40GB PS3.
-Japan was not getting the 80GB PS3 w/DS3 like everywhere else, only a 40GB that was being phased out.
-For around a month, everyone already knew a new SKU was coming out with a game, for around the same price, so why buy a 40GB (and the 40GB price stayed the same)?

As many here have already said this one was one the cards ... of course people are gonna hang around for the better SKU.
Next prediction for me is that PS3 pwns the 360 in US ... let's face it, once the fanbots have had their fill of Gears2 (which is apparently rather short and lame - a love story for goodness sake ... in gears?) they'll soon covet the many great titles on PS3 and sell their crashbox on ebay with the sole desire to play somethinjg with a little more meat than eye-candy alone. Probably writing LBP levels that satire the console they previously held so dear and it's attempts to blindside the true gamer from true innovation

Holy cow! It seemed to me that at least for this generation, the arguments of "games sell consoles" just wasn't panning out. Even MS didn't see HUGE jumps in sales with Halo 3 out. Now I know that there are arguments about people waiting for the new SKU in Japan, but SERIOUSLY. This jump is more than the usual sales totals were week by week for the past month! I guess, at least in some cases, games really CAN jumpstart hardware sales. It will be interesting to see what other territories show as the game rolls out! Go!

Damn now that is a turn around and the PS2 outselling the xbox :) The xbox out sold the PS3,with sales of +-7000 units a week but the truth is those were'nt very good figs to start with and if you look close at the chart you will see the xbox sales have'nt droped that much just proving my point!
