Sony denies 40GB PS3 failure rate

Posted on November 8th, 2007 at 07:28 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has denied allegations claiming that the new 40GB PlayStation 3 model carries a 40% failure rate, as recently reported on a Dutch website.

Speaking in an official statement today, SCEE President David Reeves commented, “We are very proud of the quality and reliability of PLAYSTATION 3 and are disappointed that such extremely sloppy journalism has resulted in this totally inaccurate story.”

“Since launching the 40GB PS3, we have experienced a fantastic jump in sales and the failure rates have remained at the very low level that we not only strive for, but have been achieving since the launch of PS3.”

The 40GB PS3 launched across Europe on October 10, with the model later arriving in North America on November 2.

Of course its horse$hit.. the PS3 is brilliant and ive never experienced ANY problems with my launch console. I wish the same could be said about the 360 .. 2 years later and models are still breaking down in extremely high numbers.

Hope not - that would be a disaster at this stage.

I would be totaly surprised if this was true. I've never seen a Sony console having problems of any kind. As for the XBox, we all are familiar with the "Red Ring of Death". There's one reason why the hardware is expensive...

any link to that dutch report?  First time I've heard about it.  I wonder if it's tweakers.net, they are very anti-sony.

ok found the link at Kotaku and it seems that dutch site has removed the lying article.  Anyway, it was normally at http://gamed.nl/view/33819

I think it has something to do with the updates. A friend of mine got a 40gb the other day. When installing the updates, it got stuck at 52%. Then it said to call a customer serivce rep.  The only answer I found was to keep at it. Finally it worked. That was scary.

everyones always trying to hinder the good guys - sony. i paid $999 for a very high quality peice of equipment, had it since may and not a single problem. the 40gb console really isnt very different - the mechanics are all the same, why would there be a high failure rate? its just the usual idiots throwing around the "sony fanboy" comments. get bent
