Max Payne theatrical trailer releasedSony has denied that it will be holding a press conference on October 12, where the company is rumored to announce the availability of a 40GB PlayStation 3 console.
Rumors of the new SKU materialised before the Tokyo Games Show, where it was later expected to be announced a press conference next week. However, a Sony spokesperson has contacted Eurogamer stating that there is no such conference being held.
This, however, may simply imply that the conference itself is not happening, as the firm refused to confirm or deny the existence of the new PS3 unit.
As October 12 nears, PSU will keep you informed with all of the latest news and rumors.

Honestly I don't feel like we need another SKU. I like just having one around.

@Yuk-Yuk:
A cheaper bundle will help with the competition. The PlayStation 3 is currently the least selling console in the market right now (X360 is selling via Halo3 and the Wii is in so much demand, Nintendo aren't certain they can meet the demand). We'd really need a cheaper SKU - and make it available everywhere, not only specific regions by this festive season.
wat does SKU stand for?
yea wht does Sku stand for lol...
anyways I heard the BC was going to get completely taken out?
does that mean players with the 40 gig cant play any
old ps1 and ps2 games???
or can a firmware update fix that???
i already Own a ps3 but i was thinkin of getting another one for Xmas
for my cousin....
If it comes with a competitive price, then I hope that will boost up the numbers and be more affordable for all ages. Also, I hope that a replacement larger capacity HDD or an official Sony External Hard Drive could be available in the forseeable future!
This has already been debunked yesterday as a bunch of MS fanboys trying to spread FUD.I can't believe PSU was gullible enough to fall for it.
No source,no quote, no NOTHING!!I thought you guys knew how to make a professional article. No Body cares if you heard it from the guy whose brother's friend's fionce's niece's friend's neighbour heard it.And thats what it seems like when you don't even add a single quote. Please PSU stick to the high standards you for yourself.
SKU means Stock Keeping Unit
Even if there isn't any Sony conference, Sony is still going to announce something next week
You all are bashing these articles? Granted, even I've noticed either PSU is far behind in posting news, or desperate for some.
I hope they don't release another SKU. I want all the cheap people to look at the lineup before they start complaining about price. I think that Sony should just keep the 80GB version. Right now, it's all about the games, not releasing stripped down XBOX360 copycat SKU's just to please the people who are too cheap to realise a good bargain when they see one. If you want cheap electronics, go for the Wii or the XBOX360. Don't look to Sony to fulfill your cheap hardware wet dreams.
By the way, I think that SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit.
Its in Best Buys system as a Spiderman3 bundle, so I am pretty sure it is a reality. As for the no BC comment..................wow, just wow. Again for the hearing impaired....THE BC IS DONE VIA SOFTWARE AND CANNOT BE ELIMINATED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It wont have the EMO, but it still has 90+% BC. That will be 100% shortly
what is sony doing by the looks of it they want us to get confused and just end up buying a wii. I am a sony fan but this is not a smart move keep one SKU and work with that.
psn id:gingo.... there is too much evidence from shops to deny that a 40 gig SKU will eventually be released when? nobody except sony knows but i can say with almost 100% that they will bring it out
We all know at least they are making an announcement on the 40 gig. Sony denies everything moments before they "unveil something big." happened with rumble....happened with the pushing of the 60 gig stock coinciding with the price drop.....it may just not be that big of a deal....but you have to just take a minute, looking around the internet, to know that this is true.
I do think the 40gb will get announced soon, but i hope sony announcesspmething big, even if theres no conference,
s.k.u.
sony- kicks- uranus.
We will see who's the last selling console in the market this time next year. With the 360 just having old&busted gears of war and Wii having nothing, I expect all the attention will be on the new games for the PS3. Just my guess. Whether we get a cheaper SKU or not, I don't think it matters.
Ehh Mass Effect, Kane and Lynch and some other games are coming out too. >_> Any way I wish they just flat out said what they need to say about the 40gig existing and whether the prices will be 400-500 dinero's here in the states.
no, yuk-yuk is right.... when people go into bestbuy and see two mountains of PS3's and 360's... it will confuse people if theres 3 SKU's in the PS3 pile... obviously 360 has many sku's, but microsoft has chosen the Elite to be the majority of the pile.... what will Sony decide on?.... i think the 80gig bundle is fine...maybe a cheaper one, point being...they need to stick with advertising ONE SKU for christmas....
22nd post!!!
I don't know where you keep getting this from! The idea of releasing a system with only 40 gigs is retarded. I don't even know where you can buy a 40 gig HDD anymore. I know where you can find one with a terabyte though... Seriously, drop the 40 gig rumours...
As someone has pointed out a "SKU" is a Stock Keeping Unit - a line item that is entered into retailers inventory systems for the purpose of holding a minimum stock level. As the retailer will hold the inventory, the vendor then provides price protection and stock rotation as well as Market Development Funds and other backend rebates against that SKU. Bottom line: it's a financial drain on retailers as they dont like having to hold competing SKU's due to limited shelf & store room space and increases the amount of money tied up in inventory. It also is not good for Sony as they (A) must administrate instock agreements for the new SKU (B) Push inventory into the channel (which could come back if they dont sell, or if are not clearing fast enough), (C) Support the SKU with spares parts for servicing warranty claims (D) Possibility that one lesser value SKU might canibalise existing sales ETC ETC ETC.... It's also confusing to potential customers if there are too many changes, too many models, configurations, packaged bundles, and Price points.
Personally; I'd focus on the 80GB model and make the necessary price adjustments there. I definately would not be cutting backward compatibility with my previous product - that is plain stupid. I also would not be introducing new branding or logo's as I would want the recognised branding of "Playstation" built up in PSX and PS2 to flow through to the new PS3. Why put up barriers? Only a moron would think to sabotage their brand and isolate their past customer base.
I also would not in this case cut the number of USB ports or Memory card readers or gimp the system board in any other way. But the way things are running at Sony these days... I'm slowly loosing hope.
