Ever since Microsoft launched their video download service for the Xbox 360, the internet has been rumbling with rumors that Sony would follow in the same direction and feature a similar service on the PlayStation 3.
After rampant speculation, Sony has subtly confirmed that they will have some form of this type of service available to PS3 owners in the future. Peter Dille, Senior Vice President of Marketing & the PLAYSTATION Network, confirmed this bit of news when addressing PlayStation Blog readers about the current state of the PLAYSTATION Network.
"Many of you have been hearing rumblings about a video service that will allow you to download full-length TV shows and movies via PLAYSTATION Network for North America. While I don’t have any new announcements here for the PlayStation Nation, it’s already been confirmed that we’ll be offering a video service for PS3 in a way that separates the service from others you’ve seen or used. Ultimately the goal of the PLAYSTATION Network service will be to break through the overwhelming clutter of digital media to give you the TV, movies and gaming content you want. More on this very soon …"
Dille also spoke on the issue of in-game XMB and an accomplishment system saying that Sony is hard at work on both these features and will have more details in the near future regarding both.
"We know you want in-game access to XMB features and we’re committed to bringing that, among other community-related services this year. They will be designed to allow more community development and collaborative gameplay, as well as recognize and reward you for your gameplay accomplishments across a broad portfolio of PS3 games. Of course, 2008 will also see the launch of PlayStation Home, and we’ll have more announcements on the expanding community functions within PLAYSTATION Network in the near future, so stay tuned."
These moves are exciting, especially seeing as the PS3 is one of the more capable Blu-ray players on the market and already has a plethora of audio and video features that would bring a tear to most home theater enthusiast's eyes. The addition of a video download service would just add to it. As for in-game XMB? Well what can be said? We are all waiting diligently for this feature to finally surface as well as an accomplishment system. We hope to be hearing about this soon and can't wait to see what Sony may have in store for the PS3.

Well obvious news, of course this will happen but not until psn cards and home come out, everything seems like it'll all interact with each other so dont expect videos soon. hasn't xmb been confirmed for 2.4 so that should be this summer if sony "rush "

This is good news. I don't blame Sony for the in-game XMB delay because they always deliver. I think they really did great on the new store. Home should come soon in May cuz Warhawk already has Home integration with the new patch. Seriously, how can u integrate Home in if it wasn't finished? I think it is nearly complete and just being tested.

I just hope they implement the accomplishments as like not during the gameplay of the game but more like you go into pshome in order to view a list of the accomplishments.
Since it's annoying as %#(*%#$ to see things pop up in a game when u wanna enjoy em, without any distractions.

You know why they stalled in-game XMB? Home. In-game XMB is a tool to bring online communities together (I learned that from having an Xbox 360). Could you imagine if we'd had XMB access for the last 8-12 months? No one would feel like they'd "needed" Home. Home would just be a fleshed out representation of what we are already capable of and they want us to come to "depend" on Home. That's what I think. All I have to say is, I hope their vision of Home's usage comes true for them after all this waiting and planning.

The XMB and home are two completely seperate things. One has nothing to do with the other, already. It's really retarded, like saying the reason we dont have flying cars yet is because of the price of air conditioners. Seriously, stop it.
As for why he spoke about ingame Xross Media Bar, it's because he (by his own words) KNOWS PEOPLE WANT IT. The problem is everytime there's an update and it's not there people get pissed and act like Sony isnt working on it, so his goal here was to assure people that it's coming because if he didn't you'd still get a hundred people an hour moaning about how it's not out yet.
And the reason for that is that it's HARD TO IMPLEMENT. Sony didnt think people would demand they copy the 36* and thus didnt make the PS3 to do exactly the same things. Ingame chat was ment to beimplemented in each game seperately by the developers but all of them have been cuddled b the M$ model of having it built into the hardware that many developers just plain refused to put it in. So now coding this ability in after the fact is harder to do because of ram constraints.

lol @xb2
youre right... web browsing, blu-ray playing, hdmi output from day 1, memory card readers, standard HDD, integrated WiFi, motion controls, all happened on the 360 years before the PS3... tell me again what the 360 can do that the PS3 cant? in game messaging? wow way to hang on to your fanboyism by a thread.

For some reason I think Sony is going to wait until E3 to announce all this stuff. The Blu-Ray victory and a pipeline of great game is giving sony a much needed break. When E3 comes i don't want to hear hard at work or imminent release i want to hear Thursday it will be up or by the time i'm finished speaking this will be available or we just released an update that.

Not a bad deal. I cant wait for these new features to materialise. Its sort of stale to have to quit a game then go to messages just to see what someone has sent you, or even when I wanna chat with someone. Most of the time there isnt even anyone online because all my friends have 360s as well and its better when it comes to users communicating, what with messenger built in and the ability to audio chat with others when youre playing a game

Sony devs just have to rewrite the XMB code to take up less memory. The XMB takes up 3/8 (96MB) of the PS3's memory (256MB). The XMB gets dumped when you start a game and vice versa. To be able to access the XMB during games would require a much smaller XMB memory consumption or Sony would have to start using a hard drive swap file.

Yeh... I thought so...
"Many of you have been hearing rumblings about a video service that will allow you to download full-length TV shows and movies via PLAYSTATION Network for North America."
So I am going to assume the downloading media is just for North America :(.

@Aplha2
I didn't say XMB was DEPENDENT of Home (like you interpreted that). I know they are two separate things. What I'M saying is that Sony underestimaed the usefulness of the XMB for message traffic, thinking that everyone who wants to be social can just do it FROM HOME. Watch, when we have both (Home AND XMB) and the Home buzz wears off, watch how many people will just choose to use their XMB for the "social thing" instead of loading Home...and Sony knows it. XMB for social gaming is the "Xbox way". Home is the "Sony way", and that's why they've been developing this for years. THEY DIDN'T SPEND ALL THAT TIME AND RESOURCES JUST SO WHINY COMPLAINING EMO BRATS CAN JUST END UP USING THE XMB FOR WHAT THEY DESIGNED HOME FOR! Think about it kids. That's what I mean. I know there two different things Mr. Reading Comprehention.

I don't care about video down loading services, I don't even care about achievements or gamerscore type systems. What I want is a next gen console with next gen network features. Its scandalous that even right now that we don't have in game XMB. Quite frankly I don't think Sony will ever put this out. Its been over a year now that we've been asking for this, I don't think they can do it without a complete overhaul of the PS3's operating system, and that's the stumbling block. I also think Home is a big White elephant, if its so great and wonderful and they've been working on it since the early days of the PS2, then can I ask why its not ready? No until I see action I'm not going to believe any Sony spin.

hmm sounds good but sony really need to pull there finger out, they are second best to most of these online services at the moment. Xbxo already has it so they really do need to hurry it up or they will always be second best.(in terms of time frame not quality of course" ;-)
