Sony is late to the game with latest Press Release

It's been two long years since Sony released the PlayStation 3 in North America and it's starting to feel like the company is just now realizing what perks their console includes. While many threads have sprouted across our forum before on this very topic, it seems that Sony has been substantially late in detailing the value differential between each console. The press release, which details what features each console provides, displays how the PlayStation 3 stacks up in the bang for your buck category.

As you can plainly see from the images above, Sony's black beauty toughs out a win against the competition in terms for straight value out of the box. The unfortunate side of this release however is the fact that Sony has waited two years to promote this information.
We're kind of shocked that the company didn't use this as a promotional tool in stores to encourage console buyers to purchase their product. We're positive this would have resulted in a lot more sales

This article is totally correct. If Sony actually advertised this info than maybe people could have seen why the PS3's initial price was the highest. People don't even think of what long term costs will cost them. XBOX 360 costs the most and Wii doesn't give that much value.

Something else I think they should have added is the fact that the Wii is a lot of times advertised as a social console. Most of the ads I've seen show a lviing room full of teenagers or familys playing. If you wanted to get the whole family or friends involved your looking at 3 extra wii motes. Not to mention charging stations or extra batteries (Im looking at you to crashbox3fixme).

Are you guys kidding me. Stop reaching for good news. I'll bet my life that the bulk of Arcades sold are replacement consoles, and the rest were upgraded by people who bought the 30 dollar up HDD/ XBL upgrade. And you can't buy a 360 today without a HDMI port. Either way you cut it, the 360 is still cheaper and thats the bottom line.
This battle is the PS2 vs the Xbox but in reverse. Just because the PS3 offers more for your dolar doesn't mean it will sell more. But in the end, its the Lack of advertising that will hurt the machine, not the cheaper 360.

i'd like to add that in the blue ray/movies category sony neglected to mention the hd-dvd drive whose initial cost was another 200 dollars, even ms promised that it would be build in and included in the consoles price. the rechargable batteries kit is also a 20 dollars addition.

there are also a couple of details about the 360 hdmi version unknown to consumers.first of all it cannot output true 1080p. it's just an upscaling similar to those dvd players do. dvd players upscale 480p to 1080p. 360 upscales 1080i,it's original resolution, to 1080p. there is a great differense between a true 1080p output and a 1080i upscaling.that was a defensive messure because, when ps3 was launched in the market ppl started complaining about 360's lack of capabilities but 360's 1080p is nothing more than a marketing trick. there is a slight difference from using the console's 1080i setting,IF there is any to see.

i think sony should step up their game and they could correct all by anouncing a killzone 2 bundle and then have a killer advertisement about the either the bundle or the game on superbowl and that would definitely increase sales

After the disasterous start, Sony has rebounded and has actually been doing a good job in marketing the PS3. It has been the mainstream media that has been trying to bury Sony this generation. With that said, a price and value comparison should have been on the table within the first six months of the PS3 launch. I wonder how many 360 owners found out about it the hard way.

The problem is sony was playing it cool the entire time. Their mentality was "Let's just be the best we can be, no attacks, no petty fighting, just sell our product". Clearly Brand X wasnt willing to do this and slung mud at the system very chance they got. Sony was just expecting everyone to go out and learn that the PS3 was better but they didn't and they were left scratching their heads. I've been saying it for ages that they've been horrible at detailing what the system is capable of, and when it cameout that people didnt even know it could play movies or even AVIs and streaming video from a media server it was proof that they had no idea of how they were screwing up.
So not the questions is can they simple start saying "This is why we're better" and the answer is NO. they can't they took too long and now if they ever try to say it the other side just goes "but look at the scoreboard." They have to push the merits of the system itself, they cant try to compare themselves to their opponents now, it's simply too late to try. Show what the system can do on it's own and people will find the money eventually.
Oh and about the 50 dollar headset? YOU PEOPLE EFFIN ASKED FOR IT. 2 years of "I wont get a headset unless it's a sony headset." when you could have taken the headset you got for your cellphone 2 years ago and that everyone and their grandmother has and used it with your PS3 LIKE THEY INTENDED for you to do. Moaning for a sony brand headset when you could have used what you probably already had is why sony dropped a 50 dollar one on you since you apparently want the best otherwise you'd have gotten one for 30 bucks like everyone else or just used a 10 doller USB headset.

Ok yeah SONY are to blame for this is some ways but don't forget it's the retailers aswel that are selling them to us, I bet that if i went to my local GAME store and i asked the staff there what console they had , i'm guessing 75% of them have a 360, so if a customer was to walk in blind and say what would you recommend? I wonder what the member of staff would say????

God the 360 defense team in a tizzy.
"Dave Karraker, Senior Director of Corporate Communications of SCEA informed us:
"Through our comparison chart we are not implying that you must purchase the myriad of peripherals and add-ons that Microsoft offers to play your Xbox 360. You don't. However, if you want to attempt to come close to the performance of the $499 PlayStation 3 by using your Xbox 360, Core or Premium, you could only do that through expensive add-ons -- that is what our chart is demonstrating. Once you add it all up, it would cost you more than our $499 unit, and you would still not come close to everything we offer, ie: free multiplayer gaming, 50GB storage capacity of Blu-ray disc, Blu-ray disc player for games AND movies, processing power of the Cell Broadband Engine."

i have know this for years, there is still a lot things you get with a ps3 that you dont get with the 360, such as standard wireless controller, the ability to have any bluetooth or usb headset, stardard rechargeable batteries( yah the 360 requires AA unless you buy a rechargeable battery for the controller), if you want a wireless headset you have to buy microsoft's you dont have an option, i have more but i dont want this to be a really big comment

@14
Why should they say anything about there headset? One phenominal feature not talked about enough is how "open" the system is to use your own accessories (unlike xbox). For example; have a bluetooth headset for your cell phone? Pair it up with your PS3. Have a USB headset from 10 years ago? Plug it in to your PS3. Don't want to fork over a bunch of cash for a crappy 64mg memory card, go buy a $5 usb flash drive and plug it in to your PS3. My point is the Playstation 3 is glorious in all ways possible as they have made a machine that works with you rather than forcing you to buy expensive first party stuff.
BTW - For anyone who doesn't have the PS3 headset, go buy it!!! It's great!

@16 I understand what you mean, however I personally think the PS3 has so much more to offer than the Xbox and Wii. I Love Bluray (DVD is so dated) Gotta have WiFi included, and Hard drive, and wireless controller with rechargable battery (not crappy battery pack.) Also that horrible brick of a transformer that comes with the Xbox. And there is no way i would pay for an online service. Just a shame like said before that sony dont push these points harder.

PS3 is good value if you need all that it offers. With 360 you have at least some options. PS3 is just too good product for current economy. And 360 graphics are at least as good in 3rd party games, while 1st party sony stuff is much better than anything else on market.

*sighs* thats what i was talking about a few articles back, people b*tch that the ps3 is too much to pay for but when you look at that chart and see the differences on what you get or lack of with the other two, it just makes sense that the ps3 is the better machine

about the headset matter, i didn't have any problem to connect my cellphone's blue tooth earphone and use it with ps3 as a headset :) flexibility and options is what sony gives you. love it or hate it,it's up to you. i also purchased a 260gb hardisk for 60 euros and upgrated my ps3's 60 gb hardisk and it even wasn't a sony brand ,if you get what i mean...regarding wi-fi, i wish everything could be wireless, even the power supplies! for someone that has only a ps3 might not be a great deal but if you have a complete entertaining system, including pre-amplifiers, power amplifiers, cd players, 5.1 speakers etc and dozens of cables all around, believe me, the wi-fi option is more than welcomed. it is also an option found only in very expensive and hi-end devices.

in the end, Sony didn't have to advertise this fact, because "PROPER GAMERS" would know that the PS3 is much better anyway, and always will be. Xbox is pants, I had one and got rid of it after a month, because my arm got tired trying to wind the thing up...

Plus its £50 a year for the ketbox to play online, soooooooooooooo if i add the 10 year life cycle of the ps3 to the difference of the 360 'presses loads of buttons on calculator, bites pencil, rubs head' the answer is! £500! blooming h3ll you xboxers really are idiots arent you!

Yeah, Sony is weak in the promotion side of things. Their mentality is "LOOK SHINEY, FUN!" While MS sits back and goes "THEIRS IS CRAP! OURS IS NEAR GOD LIKE QUALITY!" Sony just sits back, a respectable company, trying to promote their strenghts, MS fights dirty.
Sony simply wasn't ready for the cheap dirty tricks of insane amount of trash talk, gobbeling up exclusives with bags full of money and the over all nastiness that MS spews about it's competition - even to the point that people are willing to put up with their systems dying every 6months than look to the other guy.

Yeah, this promo makes perfect sense, and is probably good that Sony realized this. However, at the same time, it's nice that MS still offers a $199 system for those who ONLY want to play games. I'm sorry, but $199 for a 360 is cheap, and is worth the asking price for the library of games they have. That's cheaper than a wii for christ's sake. Believe it or not, the vast majority of the US is still using dial up, and that might also say something about how many own hdtv's as well. Regardless, the PS3 is stacked with technology, and I love it, but they should still drop the price. I wonder if this is their way of saying they're not going to do so?

Huh thats funny Sony forgot to mention the cost of fixing the 360 after its broken on you for the 6th time... Oh well! ; D I hope they do a commercial on this and show the comparrisons also I hope they put this in the stores on the display glass where their consoles are sold so people who may not know what a PS3 is will consider buying one for their kid versus a 360 because of the M$ long term hidden cost!

xbox gave to the players... something that sony did not... the power of choice ;)! if you want quality youve got to pay for it... that is why ms did not wanted to support entirely the hd-dvd... if they did... the format war would have been a different stiry.... bottomline ;)
