Sony responds to Gamestop Xbox 360 GTA IV sales

Posted on May 13th, 2008 at 06:51 EDT

Sony has attributed Grand Theft Auto IV’s sales advantage on the Xbox 360 at Gamestop due to the fact the console has a larger installed base than the PlayStation 3.

The company was responding to news from the US retailer giant that the critically acclaimed sandbox title sold through 64 per cent of its first week allocation on the Microsoft platform.

However, speaking to Newsweek, Senior Vice President of Marketing Peter Dille said that the numbers are not surprising considering the overall installed base of each console in North America.

“GameStop probably does a little bit better with the early adopter crowd,” he said. “There's a larger installed base right now on Xbox 360 than on PS3. So it's not surprising that there's going to be more selling on Xbox 360 than PS3. Having said that, we're really excited about the ratio. If I had an installed base advantage of 3-1, I wouldn't be crowing too much about a 60-40 sales advantage.”

“We think it's not as high as what GameStop's telling you, if you look at [the full picture on] the national level. They're outselling us, but not by that same margin, and it's because of their installed base lead.”

Dille went on to state that PlayStation 3 consumers are “overindexing” on GTA IV, adding, “With an installed base lead that's close to 3-1, if you're bragging about a 60-40 software split, it's clear evidence that the PlayStation 3 consumer is overindexing on GTA IV, and the PlayStation brand loyalty that we've been talking about is bearing itself out in the marketplace as we speak.

He has a good point. A favorable number in Xbox 360's case would have been a 75-25 ratio. In this sense, more PS3 owners bought the game than did the Xbox 360 owners, owing a lot to brand loyalty. Grand Theft Auto and Playstation are practically "Sister" Brands.

I wonder too, if it has something to do with PS3 owners being turned off by Xbot Gamestop employees.  I have went to several gamestop locations and each time I have been met with jargon about how the 360 version has less lag or how their online component is far superior.  Thus, I no longer shop at Gamestop.

Since I don't own a PS3 and got an XBOX360 free from a friend (wouldn't spend a dime on) I got GTA4 for it. I'll tell you a few things, the 360 froze up on me numerous times during the game having to replay multiple missions, even though it automatically saves when it freezes it doesn't pick those saves up. It has also shut down because of overheating during an hour of gameplay. I get disc read errors and have to use a lense cleaner constantly. I'm sure many 360 users experience the same crap playing GTA4. Microsoft doesn't make hardware, they make software. Unlike Sony who makes multiple quality electronics. I really hope the next GTA will only be on the PS3 due to the storage space on Blu Ray. I'm waiting for the next PS3 sku with DS3 and backward compatability and I will get GTA4 for it!

psn id: gingo... i was thinking that yesterday when reading about MS bragging about their 60/40 split and how much higher the install base was so really it was even sales if not more for the ps3 for the size of install base

So the article is trying to say that the software split is because of the larger 360 install base. However if they looked it at from the PS3 install base, more PS3 owners bought GTAIV than 360 owners. Right?

@FantasyStar yup i think your right because it's says only U.S and GameStop. (there is many country and many game stores out there so it's only U.S ) (ps3 is popular in asia and so that's hard to catch all sale records on ps3)

Here in europe the PS3 version of GTA IV is the most sold!

I work for GameMania in belgium and without giving the exact numbers i can say that for every Xbox version of the game we sell 4 PS3 versions.

These are numbers we see across belgium and the whole of europe

And thats not just the case for GTA but for almost every game that is on both consoles.

No one is surprised to hear that the Xbox 360 version of GTA4 sold more than the PS3 version. I mean, over half of all the Xbox 360's total unit sales have come from the U.S. alone, but the ratio of GTA4 sales in the U.S. is a lot closer than expected considering there is about 2 times more people in the U.S. that have 360's than PS3's.

However, the PS3 sold more hardware during the time of the release of GTA4, and in the console war, it's consoles sold that counts, not software for the same exact game title.

The PS3 has already outsold the 360 in Europe even after the 360 had a year head start and  the PS3 was more money ,and that is just a sign for what's to come. The Xbox 360 gamers kept saying, "The PS3 had no games", yet the PS3 outsold it in Europe and has been selling better worldwide. People that were buying PS3's weren't buying it for the games that were already released, they were buying the PS3 for the awesome upcoming games because when it comes to games, Sony ALWAYS has delivered and ALWAYS will.

besides, it only outsold the ps3 version in america, where there are a lot more 360's. In other territories, the ps3 versions' sales triumphed. Idk why sony didn't mention that.

Just because the 360 version isn't selling the same percent as the PS3 doesn't mean anything. The game has been out only a short time, the 360 owners who haven't picked up the game yet, may choose to do so in the next few weeks or even when the price goes down. This makes perfect sense because their are so many good games on the system right now, GTA4 can wait.

The would actually widen if they had the DLC ready for GTAIV, then it would be something to brag about but obviously they didn't make that move early on.
