Sony responds to March NPD figures

Posted on April 18th, 2008 at 04:39 EDT

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) has issued a statement in response to March NPD figures, observing 98 per cent year-on-year increase in PlayStation 3 sales.

NPD figures released yesterday revealed that the PS3 sold 257,000 units for the month of March 2008; edged out slightly by the Xbox 360, which shifted 262,000 units during the same period.

Speaking in a statement issued today, Jack Tretton, CEO of SCEA, commented: "Our sales momentum continues to defy what is traditionally a sluggish sales month. PS3 continued the strong momentum with a year-over-year sales growth of over 98 percent.”

"...PSP expanded the portable market with more than 297,011 in hardware sales this month, driven by the monster releases of the two best-selling handheld games in March, God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. This further proves the trend that 2008 is the year for PlayStation."

PlayStation hardware revenues reached USD 186 million for March, amounting to a year-on-year increase of 23 per cent, with PlayStation brand software revenue for the month up 25 per cent to USD 304.7 million, said the company.

Furthermore, the platform holder revealed it had sold 1.9 million units of software across all three PlayStation platforms during March, which yielded a year-on-year increase of 139 per cent.

Sony also said that PlayStation Network registrations in North America to date have reached 3.7 million, with 67 million pieces of content downloaded since its inception in November 2006.

With all these new customers they are getting its ever more reason to sort out the online community. Come on Sony, release the in-game XMB, Home and fix the slow PSN store. The rest of the system is awesome : )

So if the PS3 outsells the 360 next month they cannot use the shortage excuse can they?

@jicaley

Yesterday the store looked good. No more problems while loading the images. It looked great. Except for the organization in the EU store, because it still sucks.

Worst thing with the stores are the different content. I just wanna get Shivering Isle for Oblivion without having to buy the game again (buying the GOTY edition). But I cannot buy anything on my US account since the billing info on my credit card is inside the EU, so I cannot use it on the US account.

I really hope those PSN cards will work world-wide. How am I gonna buy stuff from the US store otherwise?

@ Staticneuron

PS3 has outsold Xbox 360 every single month in 2008. Shortage excuse from Microsoft is pure bullsh't! xD

lets wait until all of the exclusives start pouring in. then we will see who sells more and @ staticneuron they will have another excuse by then, it will go something like this "because of all of the 360's breaking we have not been able to make any new ones"

Wow.  I just can't see how someone could get a 360.  I had one.  What do people see in that machine?  Well I guess they don't find out what I know until they buy it, so I take that back and I guess price really IS everything.  Those poor people.

360 did have a shortage but its due to them saving consoles for gta4 release, now we will see what happens. my prediction is 360 and ps3 will be close on hardwre but we all got to face it that 360 is alot stronger in game sales.

I find it funny they used the word shifted. As in they juggled units around to make it seem like they sold more. Sony really needs to bring back the upper tier model. I know a lot of people who are ready to buy a PS3 but don't want the 40 gig model.

whaaaaaaattttt!!! this is jiberish i know if i didint have a ps3 already i would be waiting on the bundle to come out GTA4 and MGS4 so this doesnt really mean anything because in preorders the ps3 has already sold more than the 360 for those months so thisa means nothing...

Sony really needs to get it's acto together and start competing with the Wii. They should invest more heavily in first-party so that the games get released earlier.

Great to see the high PSN user number.

257,000 ain't a bad figure,especially considering the fact that so many playstation most wanted games were pushed back.

@azad_champ -

I don't think you want that. I own a wii and to be honest I see no value in the system. Sure, if I had kids or a family it would be great however currently their 3rd party games are for the most part horrible (outside of no more heros) and on top of that they don't even support HD resolutions. Which btw, a wii on a 42 inch LCD tv without the ability to hit at least 720P looks AWFUL.

I plan to pick up a 360 Elite in the next few months but for reliability sake, I'm only buying the platform exclusives for it (Halo, GeOW, Dead Rising, etc.)  Everything else I buy for my PS3, GTA IV included.

ps3s will sell even more when their exclusives start poping up on the news for being the most spectactular games ever created, now thats media attention, with the slight price drop ofcourse

If you got a ps3 then your on the right track. If you bought a xbox in the mix then you are losing money. I don't really see what is so big about xbox. It only has helno(halo is what u call it) and that game isn't all that, the only only reason it was so good cause the media blew it up and everyone talked about it.

WTF? PS3 is still not outselling Xbox 360? I thought they were supposed to be double Xbox 360 sales so they can catch up a bit. Maybe Sony should cut the price again.

Good job, Sony. Let's just hope they outsell the 360 next month.
