Sony has unveiled full details on the company’s upcoming PlayStation 3 Firmware update, Firmware 2.00.
Available Thursday, the update will allow PS3 owners to remotely turn on or off their console by using the PSP, in addition to enhancing user customisation for the system.
Gamers will now be able to create personalised photo and music playlists, as well as customize the Cross Media Bar (XMB) menu by applying custom themes or adjusting the setting.
Furthermore, the update will also introduce an information board to the XMB to channel all the latest PlayStation-related news to users, as well as offering a new PlayStation Network category and logo to facilitate navigation. A security system, Trend Micro Web Security, will also be made available.

Sony just recently sent out a survey to the GAP members asking them about which features they would want to see in an upcoming firmware. One of them was in game access to PSN messaging. Let's hope most GAP members choose this as thier choice. While it may not sneak into 2.00 let's hope for the next firmware release. This would make a good Christmas gift from Sony amongst other features. In-game access to messaging is crucial and a given if they want to keep thier loyal followers happy with thier investment.

What is the problem, Why can't Sony come out with access to the XMB while in a game or movie. Maybe there not as advanced as we thought.

Good for Sony they said it was coming and here it is. I see some people are upset but at least it is something. Maybe November 16th will be another major update since it will be the 1 year anniversary.

See...this is why no-one should talk about what they want in the next update because they're always gonna be let down...if you step back and look at this for what it is it's a pretty good update however because everyone expected 2.00 to be the XBL killer that they built it up to be in their heads they're all gonna be crying now...silly peeps...

the problem is that the last time i checked, mostly of the votes in that survey are for "in-game music", i voted 4 "psn messaging", but it was like 90 votes behind... thanks god, nobody is choosing the "larger buddy list, and buddy list features such as categorizing"

wow nick scryer you are a rude 8888888 infact if u had a brain you would all know THAT SONY DID TELL US THAT THIS UPDATE WOULD HAVE INGAME XMB OK? now that thats set straight if u look at the article right here on psu about 2.00 features u would know it included about TWENTY absolutly STUNNING features and here we all are the day befor it release only to hear that it will only include 3 3 very not-seriously-needed features wheras ingame XMB is a feature the ps3 needs more than anything. alot of hype was around " WOW VERSION 2.00 ITS GONNA BE WIKED" and it should have been see its because it the second version of the ps3- thats why this update should be amazing but hehe well.. IT SUCKS. "hey sony even if you just gave us ingame messaging" BUUUUUUT......NNNNAAAAAHHHHT!!!!!

the only thing u guys talked about was costume and ingame xmb and stuff like that, u didnt write about support a.e and sony rep said that they heard the call of the users so you guys should maybe start asking for more and not expect more, btw i dont get why everyone is so kinky about ingame xmb, i really dont care, i use the soundtrack of the game, or more the devs should allow u to get music from harddrive they already have access. anyways i dont expect more not this time around i hope around sometime next year we will have more intresting stuff to do but im not expecting lot, if we get home im satisfied

I still say you will not see in game xmb until HOME is out. And as far as the GAP survey goes, I hope there was a "all the above" option.

Watch the idiots screaming "Sony lied about firmware 2.0" for the next several months. Again when in game xmb messaging is available we will stop hearing the "noise" about it, otherwise it looks like there are some good features in 2.0. IMO we may not see this feature until Home is released.

Stop apologizing for Sony, no one is saying that we thought Sony was going to add it and are upset they didn't, we are upset because Sony SHOULD add it and they didn't.
I just recently bought a 360 this weekend, so i own a ps3, a wii, and a 360, and the 360's interface is 500 times better then the ps3. I mean come on, the fact that you can't access the xmb from in game is ridiculous. SOny needs to get on the ball here with its features.
On the 360 my girlfriend can create an account, so we both have accounts and when we play together we can both log in at the same time, so her stats get saved to her account and mine to my account, it even makes madden fun because you can "bet" acheivments against each other. This seems like such a basic feature to have in todays next gen systems, yet Sony still hasn't added it! This tiny little feature adds so much to gaming with friends its not funny...get with it Sony!!!!
I can vewi my 360 gamercard anywhere on the net, heck i have a gadget in vista that shows my card and all my friends card on my desktop, becasue microsoft does a good job keeping all game stats together...why can't sony do this!?!?
Don't get me wrong, I love my ps3, heavenly sword is great, R&C is great, i can't wait for MGS and killzone, but you have to admit they are dropping the ball when it comes to software features.

Well.. Harrison said that the "next" update was going to enhance Blu ray functionality and that's not even listed here...Oh well.... Thats pretty much all i wanted to see... I'm pretty happy with the way they have been going about things...But everyone always wants more... I bet if the list was 15 or 20 items long no one would be complaining....:0) Edit Edit: By the way... this is just a preview of whats on the update... apparently there is more... but these were probably the major items on the update... We shall see...

Let me ask everyone in here a question. Who said that this is all we are getting??? Sony does like to surprise people sometime and not reveal everything. I was read that Jack Tretton or Phil Harrison once said this.

There's no real reason why the ps3 doesn't have an in game XMB and at the very least sony should announce something in regards to it being in development ... Not really digging the home idea and i don't think it makes alot of sense to wait for the arrival of home to include a feature that should be standard by now ... it all comes down to arrogance on sony's part when you get down to it plain and simple ....

Well if anyone payed attention to the Firmware 2.00 pics out there, the new PS logo that was shown a while back is the PSN logo on the XMB. (The round looking one.)
See for yourself These pics even show some themes applied on there.
Hopefully these themes are free or at least some software to create them.

I see alot disappointed people here. It's probably because of the hundreds of firmware 2.00 rumor threads out there that assumed we were getting the in game xmb despite sony never saying it would be in 2.00. We are getting the in game xmb and my guess is we get it the same time we get home. Sony isn't a software company like Microsoft so it makes sense that Sony might be having a hard time. It's just like Microsoft isn't a hardware company but software company thus their machines are built bad. I of course hope we get the xmb before the years over but I'm not holding my breath.

in other words, not much in this update either. am i surprised? NO, but the ability to customize a playlist for music should compensate for the lack of that funtion in my psp. hope i can make it on the ps3 then export it to the psp. what happenned to the in game XMB funtion or the ability to play your own music in games?
